UCLA has four players who have averaged at least 10.0 points per game. Sophomore Kris Wilkes has averaged a team-leading 17.5 points per game, while freshman Moses Brown has registered 17.3 points and a team-leading 12.0 rebounds per game. Brown, who had eight blocks in a win over Saint Francis U on Friday, Nov. 16, has averaged 3.3 blocks per game. ALL-TIME HISTORY: UCLA has gone 6-2 all-time versus Michigan State. In the most recent meeting, the Bruins downed Michigan State, 78-76, in a first-round NCAA Tournament game on March 17, 2011. THE LAST TIME OUT Jaylen Hands scored 19 points and Jalen Hill tallied a season-high 20 rebounds to pace UCLA past Presbyterian, 80-65, in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom on Monday, Nov. 19. UCLA led 41-19 at halftime before Presbyterian reduced the Bruins’ advantage to just three points (61-58) with 7:40 to play in the second half. Hill became the first Bruin to grab at least 20 rebounds in a game since Kevin Love had 21 rebounds at Oregon State on Jan. 26, 2008. HISTORIC DOUBLE-DOUBLES Moses Brown became UCLA’s first freshman to record double-doubles in each of his first three games. Brown, a 7-foot-1 center from Queens, N.Y., had a season-high 23 points, 14 rebounds and eight blocks in the win against Saint Francis U on Friday, Nov. 19. He became UCLA’s first player with at least 20 points and five blocks in a game since Jerome Moiso had 22 points and five blocks in the Bruins’ 83-77 win at home against Arizona State on Jan. 22, 2000. THAT’S ELITE: Moses Brown became UCLA’s first player to record at least 19 points and 17 rebounds in his collegiate debut since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (then Lew Alcindor) registered a then-school-record 56 points and totaled 21 rebounds in UCLA’s 105-90 win over USC on Dec. 3, 1966. Abdul-Jabbar made 23 of 32 shots from the field in that game. RECORD TERRITORY: Moses Brown had eight blocks against Saint Francis U (Nov. 19). Since UCLA began officially recording blocks in 1978-79, only three other players have recorded at least eight blocks. Jelani McCoy set the school record with 11 blocks in his seventh game of his freshman season (vs. Maryland, Nov. 9, 1995). GO-TO GUY OFF THE BENCH Sophomore Chris Smith had 15 points, four rebounds and three assists in the Bruins’ 95-58 victory last Friday against Saint Francis U, equaling his career high in points (set last year against South Carolina State, Nov. 17, 2017). Through four games during his sophomore season, Smith has averaged 12.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists. The 6-foot-9 guard averaged 3.9 points and 1.9 rebounds per game last season, when he appeared in all 33 games off the bench. KEY NOTES ABOUT UCLA The Bruins have returned five of eight rotation players from last season’s team, a squad that went 21-12 overall en route to the NCAA Tournament’s “First Four” in Dayton, Ohio. Redshirt juniors Prince Ali and Alex Olesinski, along with sophomores Kris Wilkes and Chris Smith, played in all 33 games last season. Sophomore Jaylen Hands played in 31 of 33 games. This year’s team brings in eight freshmen – six true freshmen and a pair of redshirt freshmen (Jalen Hill and Cody Riley). Steve Alford has started his sixth season as The Michael Price Family UCLA Men’s Head Basketball Coach. Hired as the Bruins’ head coach in March 2013, he has guided the program to an overall record of 121-57. UCLA has made four trips to the NCAA Tournament, including three Sweet 16 appearances (2014, 2015, 2017) under Coach Alford. In addition, the Bruins have produced 11 NBA Draft selections during Coach Alford’s five years as UCLA’s head coach. FROM LONG DISTANCE In each of the past two seasons, UCLA has shot the No. 1 percentage from 3-point territory of any Pac-12 team. With Lonzo Ball and Bryce Alford in 2016-17, the Bruins shot 40.6 percent from 3-point range. In 2017-18, after losing Ball and Alford (along with Isaac Hamilton and TJ Leaf), the Bruins shot 38.1 percent from 3-point distance, a mark that still ranked No. 1 in the conference. As a junior, Aaron Holiday led the Bruins last season by shooting 42.9 percent from 3-point territory. IN THE RECORD BOOKS: UCLA established its program record for most attempted 3-pointers (872) and made 3-pointers (354) in 2016-17. Last season, the Bruins came close. UCLA made its second-most 3-pointers in program history (310) and recorded its second-highest total of 3-point attempts (813). THE STREAK CONTINUES: UCLA has made at least one three-pointer in its last 626 games. That streak began after the Bruins went 0-for-14 from three-point range in a 78-63 loss at No. 2 Stanford on Feb. 3, 2000. The Bruins have made at least three 3-pointers in 173 of 178 games under sixth-year head coach Steve Alford. LOOKING AT THE TOURNAMENT FIELDThe Bruins return to Las Vegas for the 2018 Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational exactly five years after having previously played in the tournament. UCLA won back-to-back games in Las Vegas on Nov. 28-29, 2013, averaging 100.0 points in victories against Nevada (W, 105-84) and Northwestern (W, 95-79). As a freshman, Zach LaVine averaged 19.5 points, having shot 77.8 percent from the field (14-of-18) and 72.7 percent from beyond the three-point arc (8-for-11). As a sophomore, Jordan Adams averaged 19.5 points in each game and was a perfect 14-for-14 from the free throw line.

versus MICHIGAN STATE: The Spartans enter this week’s tournament wtih a 3-1 overall record, currently ranked No. 11 in the Associated Press (AP) and USA Today Coaches polls. UCLA has compiled a 6-2 all-time record against Michigan State. These two teams last met in the 2011 NCAA Tournament (Tampa, Fla.), as the Bruins secured a 78-76 victory in the first round. Michigan State was UCLA’s opponent on the day that the Bruins’ program dedicated its Pauley Pavilion court in honor of Nell and John Wooden (Dec. 20, 2003). UCLA won that game, 64-58.

versus NORTH CAROLINA: The Tar Heels enter Thursday’s game against Texas with a 5-0 record (currently ranked No. 6 in the USA Today Coaches poll and No. 7 in the AP poll). UCLA has gone 3-8 in the all-time series against North Carolina. These two schools last faced each other in Brooklyn as part of the CBS Sports Classic on Dec. 19, 2015 (North Carolina defeated UCLA, 89-76). UCLA has faced North Carolina twice in head coach Steve Alford’s previous five seasons in Westwood. North Carolina also secured a 75-65 victory at the Battle 4 Atlantis (Bahamas) on Nov. 27, 2014.

versus TEXAS: The Longhorns have gone 4-0 as they enter Thursday’s contest against North Carolina. UCLA has gone 3-3 against Texas, with the two schools having last faced off at NRG Stadium (then known as Reliant Stadium) in Houston on Dec. 8, 2012. UCLA outlasted Texas in that non-conference showdown, 65-63. The season prior, UCLA had hosted Texas at the Los Angeles Sports Arena (Pauley Pavilion was undergoing an 18-month renovation). Texas won that game, 69-59. The two schools also played a home-and-home series in 2006-07 and 2007-08.

VIVA LAS VEGASUnder the direction of sixth-year head coach Steve Alford, UCLA has gone 9-4 in Las Vegas during the past five seasons. The Pac-12 Tournament has been played in Las Vegas since March 2013. Over the previous five seasons, UCLA has gone 6-4 at the Pac-12 Tournament and 3-0 in various neutral-site games played in Las Vegas. In Nov. 2013, UCLA secured wins over Nevada and Northwestern at the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational. In Dec. 2016, the Bruins defeated Ohio State, 86-73, at the CBS Sports Classic, which was played at T-Mobile Arena.

LOOKING DOWN THE ROADAfter this week’s tournament in Las Vegas, the Bruins will return to Los Angeles for a four-game homestand against Hawai’i (Nov. 28), Loyola Marymount (Dec. 2), Notre Dame (Dec. 8) and Belmont (Dec. 15). The Bruins have only faced Hawai’i once before (UCLA won, 84-64, on Dec. 9, 2000). UCLA last faced LMU at the Los Angeles Sports Arena in a season-opening game. The visiting Lions won that matchup, 69-58, on Nov. 11, 2011. UCLA and Notre Dame are resuming a classic non-conference series that began in Dec. 1952. The Bruins have gone 28-20 in 48 previous meetings against Notre Dame.

HE’S A PRINCERedshirt junior Prince Ali has entered his fourth season at UCLA. The 6-foot-4 guard from The Bronx, N.Y., played as a true freshman in 2015-16 and missed the entire 2016-17 season (redshirted, after having sustained a knee injury in July 2016). Last season, Ali averaged 9.1 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. Ali played in all 33 games last year (making 22 starts), and shot 36 percent from beyond the three-point arc (36-for-100). Ali, who has averaged 9.8 points and 1.5 rebounds in four games this season, played at The Sagemont School for his final two years of high school (Weston, Fla.).

THE BRUINS’ FRONTCOURTLast season, UCLA ranked No. 28 in the nation in rebounds per game (38.8) and finished the year No. 11 in defensive rebounds per game (28.6). The Bruins are now relying on redshirt freshmen Jalen Hill and Cody Riley and true freshmen Moses Brown and Kenneth Nwuba. Those four players are responsible for replacing the production of graduates Thomas Welsh (12.6 ppg, 10.8 rpg in 2017-18) and G.G. Goloman (7.1 ppg, 4.2 rpg), a pair of four-year UCLA players.

STANDING TALLUCLA’s 16-person roster includes eight players who measure at least 6-foot-8. Incoming freshman Moses Brown (7-foot-1, 245 pounds) is the Bruins’ tallest player since the late Mike Lanier (7-foot-7, 310 pounds) competed as a reserve center for UCLA in 1991-92 and 1992-93. UCLA’s Jalen Hill and Alex Olesinski are both 6-foot-10, while Kenneth Nwuba, Cody Riley, Shareef O’Neal and Chris Smith all stand at 6-foot-9. Kris Wilkes rounds out the group at 6-foot-8.

HOME COOKIN’UCLA went 14-2 at home last season and has won 33 of 36 games in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom since the start of the 2016-17 campaign. During UCLA’s 2016-17 season, the Bruins went 16-1 at home. Last year, the team’s only home losses came against No. 25 Cincinnati (12/16/17) and to Colorado (1/13/18). Since UCLA renovated Pauley Pavilion prior to the 2012-13 season, the Bruins have tallied an overall home record of 91-15 (logging an 85.8 winning percentage).

KEY LOSSES FROM 2017-18UCLA has lost three rotation players from last season’s team – junior Aaron Holiday (20.3 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 5.8 apg) and seniors Thomas Welsh (12.6 ppg, 10.8 rpg) and G.G. Goloman (7.1 ppg, 4.2 rpg). Holiday led the Pac-12 in scoring before being selected in the first round of the NBA Draft by the Indiana Pacers (No. 23 overall pick). Welsh tallied a team-high 17 double-doubles as a senior and was chosen in the second round of the NBA Draft (Denver Nuggets, No. 58 overall).

FIRST-ROUND TALENT: Aaron Holiday was selected in the first round of the NBA Draft after he led the Pac-12 in scocring (20.3 ppg) and minutes per game (37.7) in 2017-18. He played every minute of the game in five of UCLA’s final seven contests. In all, he didn’t get subbed out of a game in nine contests during the season (all against Pac-12 foes).

MAJOR MINUTES: Holiday ranked No. 13, nationally, in minutes per game last season (37.7). Only Reggie Miller (38.3 mpg in 1985-86) logged more minutes per game in one season at UCLA. The “minutes played” stat was first regularly recorded during the 1978-79 season. Holiday’s team-high 671 points were the most in a season since Kevin Love totaled 681 as a freshman for the Bruins in 2007-08 (Love averaged 17.5 points per game that year).

PRESEASON POSITIONAL WATCH LISTS

THE BRUINS WHEN ... Since the start of the 2013-14 season, UCLA has gone 98-10 when leading at halftime (spanning 178 games). During that same span, the Bruins have gone 20-42 when trailing at halftime and 3-5 when tied at the break. UCLA’s largest halftime deficit overcome during that stretch has been nine points (twice) – the Bruins trailed Oregon State, 38-29, on March 2, 2014 and trailed Oregon, 48-39, on Feb. 9, 2017. When the Bruins have built a 10-point lead (or larger) at any point in the game, UCLA has gone 108-12. Conversely, when trailing by 10 or more points in a game, UCLA has gone 10-45.

DEFICITS, COMEBACKS & MOREUCLA’S LARGEST COMEBACK (in 2017-18): The Bruins overcame a 14-point deficit with 17:11 to play in the second half in the team’s 74-53 victory against Washington (Dec. 31). Trailing by a 43-29 margin, the Bruins used a 45-10 scoring run over the game’s final 17:11 to earn the victory. In fact, Washington led the Bruins, 52-48, with just over eight minutes to go. Over the last seven minutes, UCLA outscored Washington by a 26-1 margin to coast to a 21-point victory. Earlier in the season, UCLA had overcome a 12-point deficit in the 72-70 win against Wisconsin (Nov. 21). Wisconsin built a 38-26 cushion with 1:51 to play in the first half before UCLA closed the gap to just seven points by halftime (38-31).

OPPONENT, LARGEST COMEBACK (in 2017-18): UCLA surged ahead by 15 points in the second half at Michigan (Dec. 9), leading 46-31 with 14:48 to play after a three-pointer by Aaron Holiday. The 15-point cushion fell to two (60-58) at the 4:06 mark. Michigan trailed, 64-61, with less than 30 seconds to play but tied the contest, 65-65, in the final 10 seconds. The Wolverines outscored UCLA, 13-4, in the overtime session to win, 78-69. That marked UCLA’s largest blown lead since Nov. 25, 2012, when Cal Poly overcame an 18-point deficit in the game’s final 12:21 to defeat UCLA, 70-68, in Pauley Pavilion.

COMEBACKS IN 2016-17The Bruins’ largest comeback victory during the 2016-17 campaign took place in a game against No. 5 Oregon in Pauley Pavilion (2/9/2017). UCLA trailed by 19 points (37-18) with 6:37 to play in the first half and by a 13-point margin (64-51) with 13:40 left in regulation. Midway through the second half, the Bruins used an 18-3 scoring run to overcome the deficit and secure an 82-79 victory. In an 83-82 win at Utah (1/12/2017), UCLA trailed the Utes, 51-42, with 16:13 left in the second half. UCLA’s largest deficit at any point during the 2016-17 season was 19 points versus No. 5 Oregon (2/9/2017).

UCLA’S TRIPLE-DOUBLE NOTESThe Bruins have four triple-doubles in their record book, including three since the assist became an official NCAA stat prior to the 1983-84 season. Most recently, Kyle Anderson had a triple-double as a sophomore in Nov. 2013.

• Freshman Moses Brown finished with 23 points, 14 rebounds and eight blocks in the Bruins’ 95-58 victory against Saint Francis U, earlier this season (Nov. 16, 2018). Brown became UCLA’s first player since Jerome Moiso (Jan. 22, 2000, versus Arizona State) to have recorded at least 20 points and five blocks in a game. The Bruins have not had any player with a triple-double of the point-rebound-block variety since Jelani McCoy on Dec. 9, 1995 (stats located above).

• Last season, Aaron Holiday totaled 23 points, nine assists and six rebounds in an 82-79 victory against USC (Feb. 3, 2018). He also approached triple-double territory in a win over Stanford (March 8, 2018), recording a career-high-tying 34 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. As a freshman in 2017-18, Jaylen Hands registered 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists in an overtime victory at home against Central Arkansas (Nov. 15, 2017).

• In 2016-17, then-freshmen Lonzo Ball and TJ Leaf each came close to recording triple-doubles. Now playing for the Los Angeles Lakers, Ball was two rebounds shy of a triple-double in his UCLA debut on Nov. 11, 2016 (19 pts, 11 assists, 8 rbs versus Pacific). Ball and TJ Leaf each finished just short of triple-doubles in UCLA’s 102-62 win over UC Santa Barbara (12/14/16) – Leaf had 25 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists, while Ball had 13 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.

UCLA IN OVERTIMEThe Bruins played five games into overtime last season (2017-18), with one of those contests pushing into two overtime periods. UCLA went 2-3 in those games, logging wins at home against Central Arkansas (106-101) in its first regular-season home game and versus Oregon (86-78) in the team’s final home contest. The game against Arizona in the Pac-12 Tournament semifinals was UCLA’s first overtime game in the conference tournament since March 8, 2007.

HEADED TO DOUBLE OVERTIMETwo of UCLA’s last three double OT games have come against the Stanford Cardinal. Last season, the Bruins absorbed a 107-99 loss at Stanford. UCLA’s last win in double overtime came against Stanford in Pauley Pavilion (Jan. 8, 2015). In that game, freshman Kevon Looney totaled 27 points and 19 rebounds to help the Bruins overcome a 14-point deficit with just over nine minutes to play in the second half.

The list of games below includes UCLA’s overtime results since the start of the 1986-87 season.

MO OSTIN BASKETBALL CENTERUCLA officially opened the Mo Ostin Basketball Center with a grand opening ceremony on Oct. 26, 2017. The state-of-the-art facility not only has provided the men’s and women’s basketball teams with vital resources, but has also freed up facility access for other programs and student-athletes. With approximately 35,000 gross square feet of space, the facility stands near Pauley Pavilion’s southwest corner, along the south end of the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

The Mo Ostin Basketball Center was designed by award-winning architectural design firm Kevin Daly Architects, in partnership with globally acclaimed high-performance design firm AECOM. The practice facility features two separate courts – Russell Westbrook Court for the men’s team and Ann Meyers Drysdale Court for the women’s team. The building also houses the Kevin Love Athletic Performance Center, which is raised over the main entrance, has its own skylights and includes separate offices for the athletic performance staffs of the men’s and women’s basketball teams.

UCLA’s facility also features separate conference rooms for the men’s and women’s basketball teams that each overlook their respective courts. The Mo Ostin Basketball Center includes locker rooms for the student-athletes, a film room, an equipment room, a training room, a nutrition center, an alumni locker room and locker rooms for the coaching staffs. Portions of the facility’s hallways include “By the Numbers” displays and an Under Armour uniform presentation. Adjacent to both courts is a “Champions Plaza” patio with a wall that honors student-athletes from past men’s and women’s teams.

The Bruins’ state-of-the-art facility is named after legendary music industry executive and philanthropist Morris “Mo” Ostin, who generously committed $10 million to the project. Ostin, who holds a B.A. in Economics from UCLA, serves as Chairman Emeritus of Warner Bros. His influence is reflected throughout the building, from a state-of-the-art sound system, acoustics and videoboard to the design of the donor display in the lobby, which was modeled after a sheet of music.
