The season became more memorable in thepostseason,whentheKnightswonfourgamesinfourdaystocapturetheC-USATournamentChampionshipandtheprogram’sfirstNCAATournamentberthsince1999.TheKnightsfinishedtheseasonat17-17afterahard-fought85-80losstothird-seededNorthCarolinainthefirstroundoftheNCAATournament.InherfirstseasonatUCF in2007-08,with freshmenplaying a nation-high 91 percent of the minutes,Williams led UCF to its first 10-win season in threeyears.WilliamscametoUCFafterfourseasonsastheheadcoachatMurrayState(2003-04to2006-07),whereshehelpedtheRacerstoaWNITberthandtheprogram’sfirst20-winseasonin18years.TheRacershada54-61overallrecordinhertimerebuildingMurrayState.Williams spent the 2002-03 season as the recruitingcoordinatoratClemsonUniversity.Prior toClemson,Williams was the assistant coach and recruitingcoordinatorattheUniversityofFloridafor12seasons(1990-91 to2001-02).Duringher tenure, theGatorsparticipated in nine NCAA Tournament and tallied a247-121overallrecord(.671winningpercentage).Williams helped attract five All-America selectionsto Florida, and nine standouts who were recruitedby and played under Williams were selected in theWNBA Draft. The list of WNBA draftees includesDeLishaMilton-Jones,whowasthe1997SoutheasternConferencePlayeroftheYear,thefirstUFplayereverselected to the Kodak All-America First Team and amember of the gold-medal winning 2000 and 2008U.S. Olympic basketball teams. Milton-Jones alsoearned gold medals with the 1998 and 2002 USAWorldChampionshipteams.BornandraisedinJacksonville,WilliamsplayedonthecollegiatelevelattheUniversityofSouthFloridafrom1984-88.Shewasafour-yearstartingpointguardandcurrentlyranksamongUSF’scareerassistleaders.Sheearnedabachelor’sdegreeinmarketingfromUSFin1988.
Withmorethan20yearsofoverallcoachingexperienceunderherbelt,JoiWilliamsentershersixthseasonastheheadcoachatUCFand10thseasonasaheadcoachin 2012-13. In her five seasons building up the UCFprogram,Williamshasalreadycompiledanimpressivelistofaccomplishments,includingleadingtheKnightsto the 2009 and 2011 NCAA Tournaments after herteams claimed Conference USA Championships inthoseseasons.WilliamshasalsorecentlyrepresentedbothUCFandher country by working with USA Basketball. In thesummerof2010,Williamsservedasanassistantcoachof theUSA BasketballWomen’sU-18National Teamandhelped lead the squad to thegoldmedalat theFIBA Americas U-18 Championship for Women. ShereprisedthatrolewithUSABasketballinthesummerof2011asanassistantcoachwiththenationalteamattheU-19WorldChampionshipsinChile.WilliamsandtheUSdefeated Spain toonce again takehome thegoldmedalforthesecondstraightsummer.In2010-11,WilliamshelpedtheKnightstotheirmostsuccessful season in nearly three decades. She ledUCF to a 22-11 record and claimed the program’ssecondC-USAtitlewitha12-pointwinoverdefendingchampion Tulane in the final. The conferencechampionshipsecuredtheKnightsaspotinthe2011NCAA Tournament; the fourth appearance in schoolhistory.WilliamsguidedtheKnightstothe2011C-USAcrownon the strength of an 11-gamewinning streak. UCFclosedouttheseasononaneight-gamerunthatwasfollowed by three straight wins in the conferencetourney to claim the championship.
