HOW ABOUT 'EM VACQUEROS!

University of Texas Rio Grande Valley enters the 2016-17 season after two consecutive 19-win seasons that both included invitations to the NCAA Postseason WNIT tournament.

Last season in non-conference, UTRGV defeated notable opponents, such as Houston and UC Santa Barbara. Both of those wins were on the road too.

The Vaqueros return their top scorer from a year ago and possibly the program’s greatest player in Shawnte’ Goff. The senior averaged 15.5 points per game and finished the year with a team leading 106 assists (3.2 APG) as well. The high volume shooter is 31 points shy of becoming the program’s all-time leading scorer, which currently stands at 1, 439. Goff’s single game career-best is 31 points, which she accomplished in 2014 versus Houston Baptist. Goff is already the program leader in field goals attempted (1,367). She was named 2016 Preseason All-WAC Player of the Year.

For most of last season UTRGV was without forward Mary Savoy. The senior only played in 11 games last year before missing the last 22 to an injury but was a factor on offense in the games she did play as she averaged 11.7 points per game. Savoy earned Media Preseason All-WAC Second Team honors to start this coming season.

LEARNED FROM THE BEST

North Texas head coach Jalie Mitchell became just the second Mean Green head coach to at least double the team’s win total from the previous season in their respected first season in the position. The only other was Karen Aston (2011-12) who Mitchell was an assistant under in Denton and then later at the University of Texas. In Aston’s first and only year with North Texas, she turned a five win Mean Green team into a 15 win team that won a game in the 2012 Sun Belt Conference Tournament. Following that conference tournament win, North Texas went three seasons without winning another conference tournament game, until this past year when Mitchell led her Mean Green team to a 79-74 victory over Florida Atlantic in the first round of the C-USA Tournament.

WHAT A SEASON

North Texas accomplished many program firsts and left its mark in the record books in its first season with Jalie Mitchell as its head coach. The Mean Green defeated a ranked team for the first time when they knocked off No. 17 Oklahoma on the road on Nov. 16, 2015, by a score of 61-57. Then at the end of the season, North Texas defeated Florida Atlantic in the first round of the C-USA Conference Tournament for its first victory in the post season conference tournament. New Mexico Junior College transfer point guard Kelsey Criner became the first Mean Green player to have 10 or more assists in a game since 2002. Criner dished out 11 assists in a Dec. 10, 2015, win over Incarnate Word.Criner then later dropped 34 points at Rice, becoming the first North Texas player with 30 or more points since 2010. Criner finished the season with 149 assists, which is the second-most in a single season in Mean Green history. Former North Texas players, Acheil Tac and Bria Frierson shot .569 and .602, respectively, from the field last season. Tac’s .569 field goal percentage is the fourth highest in Mean Green history, while Frierson became just the third North Texas woman to shoot over .60 percent and ranks third in the record books for a single season. In 2013-14 , as a sophomore, Tac shot .603 percent, which is the second highest. Freda Deckard owns the record with a .677 percentage in 1994-95.

JALIE VS. UTRGV

Friday will mark the seventh meeting between North Texas and UTRGV. The first since the Vaqueros rebranded from UT-Pan American. The Mean Green have won five of the previous six meetings. In 1998, then freshman Jalie Mitchell had her first 20-point game against UT-Pan America when she went 8-of-22 shooting. She finished with 20 points. It’s the most points a NT player has had against the school.

The next season as a sophomore, Mitchell dropped 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting on UT-Pan America’s court.

North Texas won both of those games by double digits. A GRAND FOR CANDICE

Senior guard Candice Adams is only 353 points from eclipsing the 1,000 point mark for her career. She would become the 14th North Texas women’s basketball player to reach that mark if she were to accomplish it. Adams’ 318 points last season were a career-best for the Cedar Hill native and almost doubled her previous best.Adams missed one game last season and the second half of her freshman season due to injury. Adams made 49 3-pointers last season, a personal-high and the eight-most in a single season for a North Texas women’s basketball player. She enters the 2016-17 season with 99 career made 3-pointers, which is fifth most in Mean Green history. Next up on the list is 2010 graduate Brittney James who made 112 career 3-pointers. Current North Texas head coach Jalie Mitchell’s former teammate Ashley Norris (1995-2000), owns the record for 3-pointers in a career with 197.

MAKING THE JUMP

After more than doubling its win total from the previous season and added eight talented newcomers to its roster, North Texas was projected to finish sixth in Conference USA by the conference’s preseason coaches’ poll. The sixth place projection, is seven spots higher than where they finished the 2015-16 season in 13th. No other team in the conference made that high of a jump in the poll. While it’s nowhere close to where the Mean Green hope to finish, the team and its coaches see the projection as a sign of respect for the work they’ve put in since last season.

WELCOME TO #NEWDENTONLast Wednesday, North Texas signed three high

school recruits from three separate states. The Mean Green received National Letters of Intent from 5-foot-7 guard Lauren Holmes of Fayetteville, Arkansas, 5-foot-7 guard Trena Mims of Muskogee, Oklahoma, and 6-foot forward Dejanee Terrell from Dallas’ Life School Oak Cliff High School.

JalieMitchellHead Coach

Second Year 4 North Texas ‘02

Jalie Mitchell begins her second season as head coach of the North Texas women’s basketball team in 2016-17.

Under her leadership, the Mean Green took a major step forward in her inaugural year as head coach and finished with an 11-19 record that more than doubled the team’s win total from a season prior.

A true mark of the competitive fire that Mitchell instilled all season, North Texas picked up its first win of the year on the road over then No. 17 Oklahoma. It was Mitchell’s first head coaching victory and the program’s first-ever win over a ranked team.

The Mean Green built on that success throughout the year and would go on to win its first Conference USA Tournament game before falling in the second round.

Junior Kelsey Criner, a key transfer for Mitchell and her staff, was named to the C-USA All-Defensive Team for her play throughout the season.

Since being named the head coach in April of 2015, Mitchell has had four transfers from power-five conferences join North Texas’ roster. Furthermore, her first high school recruiting class featured four freshmen, one of whom was a Texas high school state champion that was named a 6A Texas high school all-tournament team member.

When hired, Mitchell described North Texas as her dream job. The 2002 Mean Green graduate boasts numerous records as a four-year letter winniner on the North Texas women’s basketball team. She finished as the Mean Green’s all-time leading scorer with 1,764 points and tops the list of career free throws made and attempted. In 2002, Mitchell was named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year when she averaged 19.4 points per game.

She earned all-conference honors all four years at North Texas and was a part of the winningest senior class in program history, compiling a 77-39 record -- including a 42-4 mark at the

Super Pit -- and making back-to-back WNIT appearances in 2001 and 2002.

Mitchell’s No. 44 is one of two women’s basketball numbers that has been retired by the Mean Green, and her spectacular playing career culminated in 2007 when she was inducted into the North Texas Hall of Fame.

Statistically, North Texas had a noticeable increase in offense and shooting percentage in the first season under Mitchell. The Mean Green owned a 41.7 field goal percentage in the 2015-16 season. It was a 7.23 percent increase from the previous season — the largest improvement in the country. It was also the sixth-highest shooting percentage in North Texas history. In total, the Mean Green averaged nearly 10 more points per game in 2015-16 than the year before.

Prior to becoming the Mean Green’s head coach, Mitchell had two stints as an assistant in Denton. Most recently under then head coach Karen Aston for the 2011-12 campaign. In that campaign, the team went 15-16, which is its best record of the last nine seasons.

When Aston left the Mean Green to coach Texas in 2012, Mitchell followed. In her three seasons at Texas, the team combined for a 60-41 overall record. The Longhorns made the NCAA Tournament field the last two seasons, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2015 -- their first since 2008.

Mitchell began her collegiate coaching career in 2008 as an assistant coach with the Mean Green under Shanice Stephens. She spent two seasons at North Texas under Stephens before taking on the same position at UNC Wilmington for the 2010-11 season. Mitchell helped the Seahawks finish with a 24-9 record and reach the second round of the WNIT, both program bests.

In addition to the North Texas Athletics Hall of Fame, Mitchell was inducted into the Duncanville ISD Athletic Hall of Honor. In October of 2015, joining her former high school teammate and WNBA legend Tamika Catchings.
