A Word About Catechetical SundayTh is year’s theme is “Living as Missionary Disciples.”It is an opportunity for each of us to refl ect on the role we play, by virtue of our baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gos-pel. We learn and grow to be “missionary disciples” through the liturgy, a life of prayer, celebrating the sacraments, growing in our knowledge of the faith and sharing the love of our Lord with others. In this celebration of Catechetical Sunday, we will commission all of our catechists who serve as teachers of the faith. Th is is also an opportunity for all of us to rededicate ourselves to being closer to our Lord and share in the ongoing evangelizing mission of the Church.Th e Education and Faith Formation Ministries of Holy Family are look-ing forward to beginning this 2017-2018 catechetical year with YOU. All of our parish Faith Formation ministries are wonderful ways for us to grow in discipleship and be a living witness to our Catholic faith. If you would like to speak with a Catechetical Leader about partici-pation in any one of our ministries, please call the Pastoral Center at 626.799.8908. You can also reference our website at http://holyfamily.org/faith-formation/ to fi nd an outline designed to help you understand the opportunities available here at Holy Family. Blessings on your forma-tion journey this year!Colette, Dawn, Frank, Ray, Marisa, Erin and Megan

WORSHIP / THE GOOD W

ORD

Peter approached Jesus and asked him, "Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive? As many as seven times?" Jesus answered, "I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times. That is why the kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who decided to settle accounts with his servants. When he began the accounting, a debtor was brought before him who owed him a huge amount. Since he had no way of paying it back, his master ordered him to be sold, along with his wife, his children, and all his property, in payment of the debt. At that, the servant fell down, did him homage, and said, 'Be patient with me, and I will pay you back in full.' Moved with compassion the master of that servant let him go and forgave him the loan. When that servant had left, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a much smaller amount. He seized him and started to choke him, demanding, 'Pay back what you owe.' Falling to his knees, his fellow servant begged him, 'Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.' But he refused. Instead, he had the fellow servant put in prison until he paid back the debt. Now when his fellow servants saw what had happened, they were deeply disturbed, and went to their master and reported the whole affair. His master summoned him and said to him, 'You wicked servant! I forgave you your entire debt because you begged me to. Should you not have had pity on your fellow servant, as I had pity on you?' Then in anger his master handed him over to the torturers until he should pay back the whole debt. So will my heavenly Father do to you, unless each of you forgives your brother from your heart.

Religious Education Faith Formation Fund Holy Family Religious Education Faith Formation Fund provides fi nancial assistance to a child whose family applies for aid. All gifts assist families in need, and further our goal of inviting children to meet Jesus Christ, the beginning steps in the process evangelization. We work to provide effective forms and methods of catechesis to empower children with the knowledge of their faith and skills to live a Christian lifestyle as a disciple of Jesus Christ. Preparation for the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist is also a part of our ministry. Assistance is dispersed yearly. Scholarships are a confi dential process that takes into account the family needs, the total number of children applying for assistance and the total amount of funds available each year.Donations can be offered by check, cash, or Online Giving through the Holy Family website at www.holyfamily.org. If you would like to offer a gift to the formation of a child, learn more about our ministry or if you have any questions, please call our offi ce at 626.403.6118.6

Holy Family School HighlightsDear Parish Community,Holy Family School wishes to extend its gratitude to our parishioners for the tremendoussupport provided at last May’s Auction event. As many of you know, the “paddle raise” atthe event garnered $40,000 towards improvements in our Education Center. I am happyto let you know that we have put those funds to good use, and that our children in theschool and parish will be the benefi ciaries. Specifi cally, we have been able to install newfl ooring and paint classrooms, which has given our space a new and revitalized look. Wehave also been able to upgrade our technology with new Promethean ActivePanels; thesenew active panels allow teachers and students to interact and share digital content in newand exciting ways.Once again, on behalf of all the ministries who use our Education Center space, weextend our sincere thanks! In Christ,Frank Montejano

Recruiting For Tutoring MinistryEach year in September, Holy Family Tutoring Ministry begins to assess their need for tutors and librarians in the schools we serve. We would like to invite you to join our ministry. All volunteers must take Virtus training, have fi ngerprinting done and assure the schools that your TB test is current. Please watch the Bulletin for notices of these classes. We will provide you with an orientation to the schools and to our ministry. Men’s Reading GroupTuesday, September 19 at 7:00 p.m., Guadalupe Room. At our next meeting, we will be discussing: The Wisdom Jesus: Transforming Heart and Mind – a New Perspective on Christ and His Message, by Cynthia Bourgeault. If you put aside what you think you know about Jesus and approach the Gospels as though for the fi rst time, something remarkable happens: Jesus emerges as a teacher of the transformation of consciousness. Cynthia Bourgeault is a masterful guide to Jesus's vision and to the traditional contemplative practices you can use to experience the heart of his teachings for yourself.

Women’s Reading GroupTuesday, October 3, 7:00 p.m., Guadalupe Rm. Even if you haven’t read the book, join us for wine, snacks, and lively exchange on Richard Rohr’s Falling Upwards. He shows that those who have fallen or failed are the only ones who understand "up." We think of the second half of life as largely about getting old but he shows why getting older is by far the best and most spiritual time of life.

Kindred SpiritsParish life can be strongly marriage and family oriented with few opportunities for single adults to feel comfortable at social gatherings or in volunteer capacities. Kindred Spirits was formed to create comfortable ways for single adults over 40 to get to know each other, and to build supportive friendships that enhance their participation in parish life as well as create meaningful connections in their lives outside of church. Truly great friendships have evolved through sharing in social events, volunteer projects, and spiritual enrichment activities together. We attend the Saturday vigil Mass each fi rst Saturday, followed by going to a diff erent local restaurant. Other potential activities are discussed and plans made during these fi rst Saturday gatherings. If you would like additional information, please email [email protected].

Did you know? Warn tweens and teens about selfi e risksTeens and tweens typically like to push boundaries and test their limits, but the new trend of taking dangerous selfi es has led to several tragedies. There are far too many people who think that taking a picture while driving, or standing out on a ledge, is more important than their own safety, and that getting “likes” on a photo makes the risks worth it. Talk to your kids about safety, smart choices, and being aware of their environment and surroundings, even when they’re using their smartphones. For a copy of the VIRTUS© online article “Selfi es are More Dangerous than You Think,” email [email protected] or call 213.637.7227.

Immigra on has been a part of our country’s history since its beginning. Issues surrounding the facts of immigra on figure prominently now in our social and poli cal discourse. Many of us carry ques ons and concerns about the impact of immigra on:

Who are immigrants now and in the past? Why do they migrate?

What does an influx of people mean for a community, a na on?

What is the role of a Chris an community in addressing the needs and issues that stem from the reali es of immigra on?

This Study Group is formed under the guidance of the Social Concerns ministry.

The Immigra on Study Group (ISG) will meet monthly. Par cipants will select an ar cle to anchor the discussion for the following month. A beginning selec on of reading material is available on the Holy Family website holyfamily.org/social-concerns

Our readings / discussions will encompass Church Social Teachings, gospel references, current policy reports, historical informa on, etc. Download the first reading selec on, Welcoming the Stranger Among Us: Unity In Diversity from the Unites States Conference of Catholic Bishops, and join us.
