A Word About Selection for the Diaconate The selection of diaconate applicants for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles complies with the document of the Congregation for Catholic Education Basic Norms for the Formation of Permanent Deacons, as well as the National Directory for the Formation, Ministry and life of Permanent Deacons in the Unit-ed States. The National Directory describes some of the qual-ities that a man should have to apply for the diaconate. They include: natural inclination of service to the Christian commu-nity, and to all in need; ability to share one’s faith; generosity in service; sound faith; good Christian reputation; personal integ-rity, maturity, and holiness; regular participation in the Church's sacramental life; a positive and stable marriage, if married, or a mature celibate state of life, if single; and a deep spirituality and prayer life. The next diaconate information day is Sunday, July 23, 2017 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at St. Dominic Savio Parish, 13400 Bell-fl ower Blvd. Bellfl ower, 90706If you have any questions, please contact theDiaconate Formation Offi ceArchdiocese of Los Angeles3424 Wilshire Boulevard, 2nd FloorLos Angeles, CA 90010-2241213-637-7383

Burgers & Bikes Many of our luncheon clients at the Giving Bank, most of whom live on the streets, are dependent on their bicycles for transportation. Unfortunately, our clients do not have the means or knowledge to fi x a fl at tire or do other simple bike repairs, so they simply abandon their bike when there is a problem with it. In order to assist our clients we are hosting a bicycle workshop Friday June 23, 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Our goals are to teach our clients how to maintain their bicycles, while providing answers to any questions asked. We plan on having information on available resources as well. If you would like to volunteer or make donations (such as bicycle parts) for this event, please call us @ 626.403.6140.

Mass in Recognition of All ImmigrantsToday, June 18th at 3:30 p.m.

Archbishop José H. Gomez encourages all parishioners to attend this Mass in support of our immigrant brothers and sisters. Parishes are also invited to participate in the opening pre-procession that begins at 2:30 p.m. by providing two representatives to be a part of the procession. If you are interested in carrying a Holy Family banner please contact Frank Ponnet at 626-403-6116 or [email protected].

Third Annual Connolly Golf ClassicSave the Date November 10, 2017

The Second Annual Holy Family Connolly Classic was a great success! We had 130 golfers at Brookside and the scramble format allowed golfers of all skill levels to participate and have fun. The day wrapped up with a festive BBQ on the Brookside Patio and the raffl e and silent auction raised additional funds for our Holy Family Playground Project and Scholarship effort.

We are thankful to our generous sponsors, dedicated golf committee and volunteers who stepped up in support of the school. We look forward to the Connolly Classic being a tradition and community building day for years to come. What a great day for Holy Family School and see you this year at the 3nd Annual Connolly Classic on November 10, 2017!

Jesus said to the Jewish crowds: "I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my fl esh for the life of the world."

The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his fl esh to eat?" Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the fl esh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my fl esh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my fl esh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my fl esh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever."

The Good WordJN 6: 51-58

Religious Education Religious education is a lifelong process that guides the baptized into “intimacy with Jesus Christ” (Catechesi Tradendae). Religious education is more than formal instruction; it is a conscious pathway to the development of the whole person as a model of Christ and permeates all facets of life in a Catholic community. Its foundations are laid in the home and built in partnership within the parish community.Th e ministry of Religious Education is an entrusted participant in this collaboration, serving the mission and expressing the love of Christ to our parish children! It is the goal of our parish, directors in formation, catechists and volunteers to work diligently with parents to encourage, support, strengthen and enhance their work in the formation of their children for the Kingdom of God.

Men’s Reading GroupTuesday, June 20 at 7:00 p.m., Guadalupe Room. At our next meeting, we will be discussing: He Can See Heaven-The Hierophant, by J.B. Keats. A cascading adventure of discovery and intrigue tells the tale of Ellen Shea, who is on a perilous search for a trove of lost scrolls. Penned by Saint Papias and known to history as the Logia, the scrolls are the fi rst record of Jesus. Please join us for a lively discussion! We will have the author of the book, Mr. Keats, at our meeting.

Women’s Reading GroupTuesday, July 18, 7:00 pm, Guadalupe Room. Even if you haven’t read the book, join us for wine, snacks, & lively exchange on Sinclair Lewis’ classic novel, It Can't Happen Here. Lewis shows how a Democrat becomes US president (after a campaign appealing to fear, economic desperation, and return to national greatness), then he imposes totalitarian rule on the US.Future Book Discussion8-1-17 Sale, Columbus…Conquest of Paradise

Kindred SpiritsParish life can be strongly marriage and family oriented with few opportunities for single adults to feel comfortable at social gatherings or in volunteer capacities. Kindred Spirits was formed to create comfortable ways for single adults over 40 to get to know each other, and to build supportive friendships that enhance their participation in parish life as well as create meaningful connections in their lives outside of church. Truly great friendships have evolved through sharing in social events, volunteer projects, and spiritual enrichment activities together. We attend the Saturday vigil Mass each fi rst Saturday, followed by going to a diff erent local restaurant. Other potential activities are discussed and plans made during these fi rst Saturday gatherings. If you would like additional information, please email [email protected].

Kids’ Daily Meditation Books

Routines are often hard to maintain during the summer. Without a school schedule to follow, daily prayer is often forgotten. These two simple

Daily meditation books are an easy way to continue a regular

spiritual routine.

Jesus Calling: 365 Daily Devotions for Kids is based on the wildly popular adult books of the same title by Sarah Young. Adapted by Tama Fortner, this book will help your child develop and continue an

intimate relationship with Jesus through daily time with Him and his Word.

Another adaptation of an adult daily devotional book, Max Lucado’s Grace for the Moment: 365 Devotions for Kids is a perfect way for families to read together or for older readers to enjoy alone.

Each day offers a devotion and scripture to encour-age regular time with God. And because giving

grace is just as important as receiv-ing it, a “Growing in Grace” op-

portunity accompanies each devo-tion, offering

practical and easy-to-do activities to help kids apply God’s grace _

every day and every moment.

It’s Back The very popular Arlington Garden

Sweet Orange Marmalade is back in stock.

This brand new book on the life and work of a controversial American Catholic, now a candi-date for sainthood, is told by her granddaugh-ter. Although she lead what can only be de-scribed as a controversial life, she is seen by many religious and non religious people as a heroine. She has been named a “great Ameri-can” by Pope Francis and has been recognized as a Servant of God by the Catholic Church, the first step toward canonization. In a world preoc-cupied with materialism and the accumulation of wealth, Dorothy Day is a model for construc-tive action. The author, her granddaughter, Kate Hennessy brings this most modern of modern Catholics into the 21st century, pre-senting a loving, intimate account of an under sung champion of justice.

Lisa Hendey is the founder of CatholicMom.com and a best-selling author. One of her more recent books is The Grace of Yes. Lino Rulli, host of The Catholic Guy says this of Lisa’s book, ‘’’No is

safe. ‘No’ is simple. But ‘no’ isn’t always the right answer. Lisa Hendey’s The Grace of Yes teaches, challenges, and encourages us how to say yes to God and others. Should you read this book? Yes! And God’s grace will work within you.”

The book is available in the parish bookstore.

A 1935 American novel, published during the rise of fascism in Europe, shows how a US Democrat becomes president (after a campaign appealing to fear, economic desperation, and a return to national greatness). The new president imposes totalitarian rule and a ruthless paramilitary force like that of Adolf Hitler and the SS. The WPA performed the theatre version of the novel across the US, beginning in 1936..
