Together in Mission is the one appeal we make each year to help our poorest parishes and schools.

When you give to Together in Mission, you are bring-ing Christ’s light—the signs of his love and his tender mercy—into the lives of our brothers and sisters who are hurting, who are broken, who are in need of healing.

We hope that you will join Archbishop Gomez this year in supporting our campaign and we thank you for your generosity.

Welcome to Holy Family Church If you are visiting, or new in our community, we are blessed that you are here to worship with us. Our Parish Life Director, priests, and all our parish family extend to you the hospitality of Jesus Christ. If you would like more information about our parish or wish to join our faith community, please visit the Welcome Center on Sunday mornings or contact the Pastoral Center.

PREP Faith & Hope Art Show - a Thank YouOn January 14 and 15, Holy Family Church was gracious to once again host the PREP/Perpetrator Reentry Program ‘Faith and Hope Art Show”. This was only our third show, and we are always nervous, but what a fantastic way to begin the New Year. From the very fi rst patron, who was so very patient as the credit card reader was ‘acting up’, to the fi nal person who wandered through the art and chatted, every single person the entire PREP crew came into contact with was warm, friendly and welcoming. Their questions were well-spoken and their comments were full of concern for the cause which PREP supports. All of us here at PREP want to give a huge thank you to everyone at Holy Family, both staff and parishioners.

Additionally, a special thank you to Cambria for your excellent support, and to Frank Ponnet, Nancy Bevins and Patricia Plescia for your support in assuring this Show went well.

Everyone at PREP thanks each and every person at Holy Family who was involved in the PREP Faith and Hope Art Show. We send our thanks, blessings and prayers.

The Chosen RemnantZephaniah is one of the least-known of the Old Testament prophets. He speaks in today’s fi rst reading of impending judgment. But the Lord will leave a “remnant” in Israel. This image of a remnant, or remainder, was to become vital to both Judaism and Christianity.

Paul’s letter to Corinth makes obvious his deep concern for the Christians there. They are too self-confi dent, he says, too sure of themselves. He admonishes them to remember that Christ has given them all they have.

Today’s Gospel comprises the opening of Jesus’ “Great Sermon.” As God gave Moses the law on Sinai, so now Jesus gathers his disciples on a hillside to teach them the new law. Each of these Beatitudes contrasts the humiliation of the present with the glory of the future: poverty vs. the riches of God’s kingdom, hunger for holiness vs. fulfi llment in the Spirit, persecution vs. the reign of God. Jesus is here speaking to God’s chosen “remnant.”

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him. He began to teach them, saying:“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted.Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land.Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfi ed.Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God.Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.”

RCIAAs Christmastide fades and we look towards Lent, it might be time for you or someone you know to consider becoming Catholic. If you or someone you know would like to explore the Catholic Way of life, please contact Dawn at 626.403.6128, or email [email protected].

Religious Education Religious education is a lifelong process that guides the baptized into ‘intimacy with Jesus Christ’ (Catechesi Tradendae). Religious education is more than formal instruction; it is a conscious pathway to the development of the whole person as a model of Christ and permeates all facets of life in a Catholic community. Its foundations are laid in the home and built in partnership within the parish community.

Kindred SpiritsParish life can be strongly marriage and family oriented with few opportunities for single adults to feel comfortable at social gatherings or in volunteer capacities. Kindred Spirits was formed to create comfortable ways for single adults over 40 to get to know each other, and to build supportive friendships that enhance their participation in parish life as well as create meaningful connections in their lives outside of church. Truly great friendships have evolved through sharing in social events, volunteer projects, and spiritual enrichment activities together. We attend the Saturday evening vigil Mass each fi rst Saturday, followed by going to a diff erent local restaurant. Other potential activities are discussed and plans made during these fi rst Saturday gatherings. If you would like additional information, please email [email protected].

OUR COMM

UNITY LIFE

Mission Haiti Visiting Haiti

Deacon Martin Gonzalez was one of the parish delegation visiting Haiti earlier this month. He writes:

I would like to thank Holy Family for making this experience possible. I learned a lot about myself as a human being especially about appreciating the things that I have here in America such as running water and food. Aside from all the physical poverty that exists in Haiti, there are many good things happening in the country.

Hands Together is responsible for providing many kids and teenagers with free education in order to help them improve their economic condition. Amongst other things that the organization is investing in is agriculture. I learned that one of the reasons why Haiti does not have a lot of trees and vegetation is because people use them for energy resources.

For me, I was shocked at the different levels of poverty. There are the poor, and then there are the poorest of the poor that live in the slums. On our fi rst day Father Tom Hagan took us to the poorest neighborhoods. It opened my eyes to the poor conditions that many people Haiti live in. But one of the wisest things that I learned from Father Tom was to try to look past the physical poverty and look at those in Haiti as regular people. They too struggle in their faith just as much as we all do.

My most memorable experience was when I got together in a small circle with the High School Students. They asked us many questions. They were thankful for having been given the opportunity to study. I felt like I was a part of their lives without knowing them because at the end of the day it is love that unites us all.

In short, I would like to thank Holy Family Parish in South Pasadena for sponsoring this trip for us. I hope that in the future more seminarians can visit Haiti. I know I feel like a better man because of this trip. And I thank you all because you have made this trip possible.

God Bless,Deacon Martin Gonzalez

Thank you, Deacon Martin, and God bless you on your journey to the priesthood!

Parent and caregiver observations can help protect a child in danger, and you should know when it’s important to speak up. Although it may be awkward to approach a parent you do not know, if you have witnessed a scenario where the child is in danger of physical or mental abuse, it is your responsibility to act in that child’s best interest. Christmas Environment “Thank You” - 2016

It is an honour and a privilege to be able to create a beautiful environment in which to celebrate the incredible joy and love which embody the Birth of our Saviour. It also requires the assistance, creativity, and hard work of a group of kind, loving, and caring individuals, who give so freely of their time and of their hearts. From the bottom of my heart, I extend my deepest gratitude to our Cheerleader, Fr. Marlon, Staff Member Jose Mena, and Volunteers Pam Kennington, Natalie Duran, Caren Sawyer, Judy Skitek and Jay Kruger for all of your time, work, laughter, creative spirit and joy! I would also like to extend a HUGE thank you to David Lyman who, after the fi erce storm on De-cember 23rd, re-hung the large wreath which had blown down off the front of our beautiful Church on Christmas Eve! I thank you all for making it so much fun as we creatively enhanced our beau-tiful Sacred Space for Baby Jesus’ Birthday celebration! May God Bless you and yours abundantly throughout the New Year!
