TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: CALLED TO BE AUTHENTHIC For these last two weeks I have been really troubled with the situations that have been happening in our nation, our city and the world. That is not to say that other times it didn’t, but there are moments when just praying isn’t enough, things have to be said and things have to be done. I grew up after the Second Vatican Council, grew up hearing that God is love and peace, where before we in the Church talked about fearing God. So today’s gospel reading really sounds harsh to our ears and not so easy to comprehend at first hand. There is a deeper meaning to his words, one of dissatisfaction with the way things were going, especially among those who said they believed, frankly they were acting quite the opposite way. All seemed too in order, but they were forgetting the plight of their neighbor: the widow, the poor, the children, the sick, those who lived on the margins; they were actually forgetting the God who had heard their plea, who had taken them from a land of oppression, of fear, death and brought to the land of plenty. They forgot the alliance that was made with Abraham. They forgot that when they were hungry, they had been fed with manna, sustenance for the journey. Some in our history have taken this as cause to go against all that was done, even the things that were right. Some have taken up arms and become the oppressors themselves. They became the voice for many people around the world who lived in precarious situations, but they put Christ aside. Then they too became just as bad or lost energy, because it was not founded upon the Lord. Jesus calls us to fuel the fire in our lives, so that we do not become just church seat fillers or pew warmers, but a people who go to be nourished in body and soul. That we may listen to the living Word of God and receive him. Then in that union of Spirit and life, we go forth to put into action what we have received. That we take of all creation and all peoples. That we take seriously the situation of the world we live in, which are called to protect. That all life at all ages may be taken care of, no matter where they come from and no matter what they possess. That we, also as a community of God, display signs of unity, of mercy, forgiveness and love; so that we may be a sign of what God calls us all to be. We are called to be authentic, this a lifelong goal which we strive for, something Christ animates us to do when he says: “that we may be holy, as our God is holy.” Holiness is achieved through a life given to the Father in the service and sacrifice for our neighbor.

VIGÉSIMO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO: LLAMADOS A SER AUTÉNTICOS

Durante estas últimas dos semanas, he estado realmente preocupado por las situaciones que han estado sucediendo en nuestra nación, nuestra ciudad y el mundo. Eso no quiere decir que otras veces no fue así, pero hay momentos en los que rezar no es suficiente, hay que decir cosas y hacer cosas. Crecí después del Concilio Vaticano II, crecí escuchando que Dios es amor y paz, donde antes en la Iglesia hablábamos de temer a Dios. Entonces, la lectura del evangelio de hoy realmente suena dura para nuestros oídos y no tan fácil de comprender de primera mano. Hay un significado más profundo en sus palabras, uno de insatisfacción con la forma en que iban las cosas, especialmente entre aquellos que dijeron que creían, francamente, estaban actuando de manera completamente opuesta. Todo parecía estar en orden, pero se estaban olvidando de la difícil situación de su vecino: la viuda, los pobres, los niños, los enfermos, los que vivían al margen; en realidad se estaban olvidando del Dios que había escuchado su súplica, que los había sacado de una tierra de opresión, de miedo, muerte y los había traído a la tierra de la abundancia. Se olvidaron de la alianza que se hizo con Abraham. Olvidaron que cuando tenían hambre, habían sido alimentados con maná, sustento para el viaje. Algunos en nuestra historia han tomado esto como una causa para ir en contra de todo lo que se hizo, incluso las cosas que estaban bien. Algunos han tomado las armas y se han convertido en los propios opresores. Se convirtieron en la voz de muchas personas en todo el mundo que vivían en situaciones precarias, pero dejaron de lado a Cristo. Entonces ellos también se volvieron igual de malos o perdieron energía, porque no estaba fundada sobre el Señor. Jesús nos llama a alimentar el fuego en nuestras vidas, para que no seamos solo personas que llenen los asientos de la iglesia o calentadores de bancos; sino personas que van a alimentarse en cuerpo y alma. Para que podamos escuchar la Palabra viva de Dios y recibirlo. Luego, en esa unión de Espíritu y vida, salimos a poner en acción lo que hemos recibido. Que cuidemos de toda la creación y todos los pueblos. Que nos tomemos en serio la situación del mundo en que vivimos, que estamos llamados a proteger. Que todas las vidas, todas las edades se pueda cuidar, sin importar de dónde vengan y sin importar lo que posean. Que nosotros, también como comunidad de Dios, mostremos signos de unidad, de misericordia, perdón y amor; para que seamos una señal de lo que Dios nos llama a ser. Estamos llamados a ser auténticos, este es un objetivo para toda la vida, algo que Cristo nos anima a hacer cuando dice: "para que seamos santos, como nuestro Dios es santo". La santidad se logra a través de una vida dada al Padre en el servicio y sacrificio por nuestro prójimo.

Pope to youths: The Church needs you so she can be fully herself

In his address to the young people, Pope Francis reminded them that they are the “prime protagonists of the pastoral conversion so greatly desired by the Synod Fathers”. Preparing for WYD 2022 in Lisbon Recalling the journey towards World Youth Day in Panama, Pope Francis called on young people to prepare for the next World Youth Day by meditating on two scriptural passages: Luke 7:14, “Young man, I say to you, Arise!”; and a re-working of Acts 26:16, “Stand up. I appoint you as a witness of what you have seen”. The Pope said he hopes that there will be a “harmonious connection” between the journey to the Lisbon World Youth Day, and the post-synodal journey. These verses will serve as the themes for the World Youth Days in 2020 and 2021, leading up to the international World Youth Day in Lisbon in 2022, with the theme, “Mary arose and went with haste” (Lk 1:39). “Do not tune out the voice of God, who urges you to arise and follow the paths He has prepared for you,” Pope Francis said in conclusion. “Like Mary, and in union with her, may you daily bring to others all your love and joy”.

Sacrament of Marriage For a marriage ceremony at St. John the Baptist or Our Lady of Good Counsel, arrangements must be made with the Pastor at least 1 year before the wedding date. The diocesan Marriage Preparation or “Pre-Cana” classes are presented in English, Spanish, Creole, Polish and Italian. The Diocese of Brooklyn have specialized Pre-Cana for Interfaith/Interchurch couples, for couples who are re-marrying and for couples who are convalidating their civil unions. HOLY SACRAMENTS

Infant Baptism Birth to 6 yrs. Infant baptisms are celebrated on the first Sunday of every month. Baptism preparation class for parents and Godparents are held on the Tuesday prior to the Baptism Sunday. Parent(s) or Godparent(s), please bring an original birth certificate of the child to the main office where you can begin the process of registration for this beautiful sacrament.

Children’s Faith Formation ages 7 yrs. to 15 yrs. (Baptism, First Holy Communion, Confirmation) Our Children’s Faith Formation program provides preparation of the Holy Sacraments for children. The program follows Diocesan Guidelines for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Children. The hours for children's faith formation classes are Sunday, 9:30 A.M. -1:00 P.M.

Pentecost Confirmation 16 yrs. and older Are you baptized and received First Holy Communion but have not completed the Sacrament of Confirmation and you are over the age of 16? Our Confirmation only program begins in January in preparation for Pentecost Confirmation typically at the end of May or beginning of June.

Anointing of the sick Call (718) 455-6864 to make arrangements for the sick person to receive Holy Communion or the Anointing of the Sick at home.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) (Becoming a Catholic)

Are you baptized? Have you received First Holy Communion? Are you Confirmed? Adults and youth at least 16 yrs. of age seeking full initiation into the Catholic Church are invited to enter into a process of faith formation. RCIA classes are all year round.

LOS SACRAMENTOS Bautismo para bebes nacimiento a 6 años

Los bautismos para bebes se celebran el primer domingo de cada mes. La clase de preparación del bautismo para los padres y padrinos es el martes antes del domingo del bautismo. Padres o Padrinos, traiga el certificado de nacimiento original del niño a la oficina principal donde pueden comenzar el proceso de inscripción para este hermoso sacramento.

Formación de Fe para Niños 7 años hasta 15 años (Bautismo, Primera Comunión, Confirmación) El programa de formación de fe para nuestros niños se prepara los niños para sus Sacramentos. El programa sigue las Directrices Diocesanas para el Rito de Iniciación Cristiana de los Niños. Las horas para las clases son domingo, 9:30 A.M. -1:00 P.M.

Confirmación de Pentecostés 16 años y adelante ¿Se ha bautizado y recibido la Primera Comunión pero no ha completado el Sacramento de la Confirmación y tiene más de 16 años de edad? Nuestro programa de Confirmación solo comienza en enero en preparación para la Confirmación de Pentecostés típicamente en mayo o junio.

Rito de Iniciación Cristiana para Adultos: R.I.C.A. (Convertirse Católico)

¿Está bautizado? ¿Has recibido la Primera Comunión? ¿Está Confirmado? Se invita a los adultos y jóvenes 16 años y adelante, que buscan la iniciación completa en la Iglesia Católica para entrar en un proceso de formación de fe. Las clases de R.I.C.A. son todo el año.

Este programa ha tomado su nombre del pasaje del evangelio en el que Jesús asiste a la celebración de las Bodas de Caná. Al convertir el agua en vino, Jesús nos enseña que toda boda tiene dos elementos: el de celebración y el de transformación.
