The Anglo-Irish breeding industry still has some wayto go before it becomes monopolized by a single maleline, unlike Japan, where the latest edition of the Derbywas exclusively contested by grandsons of SundaySilence (seven sons of the American Horse of the Yearwere responsible for 16 of the 18 runners, with the twoexceptions having dams by Sunday Silence). However, last week=s 22 stakes races at Royal Ascotconfirm that Britain and Ireland have become largelyreliant on descendants of two sons of Northern Dancer--Sadler=s Wells and Danzig. No fewer than 12 of the 18group winners came from one or other of these lines. Galileo, Montjeu and Beat Hollow were the threeSadler=s Wells sons with a stakes winner to their credit.Galileo and Montjeu both enjoyed the distinction ofhaving a Group 1 winner, while a fourth son, HighChaparral, fell just a neck short of that target when SoYou Think was unexpectedly beaten in the Prince ofWales=s S.

The Danzig male line did even better, providing threeof the meeting=s five other Group 1 winners. The Green Desert branch more than held its own inthe white-hot competition, with Oasis Dream achievinga notable group-race double with Prohibit and Power, while Cape Cross scored with Namibian. It was the Danehill branch, though, which dominated,as so often in the past. Five sons--Rock of Gibraltar,Tiger Hill, Exceed and Excel, Holy Roman Emperor andOratorio--collectively supplied a total of six groupwinners, while another five--Aussie Rules, Cacique,Chevalier, Danehill Dancer and Dansili--hadgroup-placed progeny. This domination reflects the way that Danehill hascome to permeate Coolmore=s stallion roster in Ireland.Of the 23 stallions standing the 2011 season, eight(Aussie Rules, Danehill Dancer, Duke of Marmalade,Dylan Thomas, Fastnet Rock, Holy Roman Emperor,Oratorio and Rock of Gibraltar) are sons of Danehill andanother four (Alfred Nobel, Choisir, Mastercraftsmanand Strategic Prince) are grandsons. There=s even agreat-grandson in Starspangledbanner, which booststhe total to 13. As six of the other 10 are members ofthe Sadler=s Wells line, it is easy to understand whyCoolmore has been on the lookout for top-classperformers whose pedigrees will bring in some differentbloodlines. Although the Aussie superstar So You Think is agrandson of Sadler=s Wells and is inbred 3x4 toNorthern Dancer, his first 13 dams were bred inAustralasia, mainly in New Zealand. He therefore hasplenty of scope as a mate for Danehill=s manydescendants. The Coolmore partners also stepped in to secure thestallion services of Goldikova=s conqueror CanfordCliffs. A Royal Ascot victory adds lustre to any futurestallion=s C.V., but Canfod Cliffs now boasts three. These Royal Ascot wins came in the G1Coventry S.,G1 St James=s Palace S. and G1 Queen Anne S.--arguably the three races most likely to endear him totoday=s breeders.

CANFORD CLIFFS, c, 2007

Caulfield Cont.

Although his pedigree couldn=t be described asfashionable, the same could have been said of IndianRidge, a dual Royal Ascot group winner who made amajor impact as a stallion. Part of Canford Cliffs= appeal stems from the factthat he has comparatively little Northern Dancer bloodby today=s standards. His sire Tagula has no NorthernDancer blood and neither of the two lines in the bottomhalf of Canford Cliffs= pedigree will appear in the firstfour generations of Canford Cliffs= progeny. Canford Cliffs had every right to be a talented,quick-maturing juvenile, as Tagula had also run well inthe Coventry S., prior to recording victories in the G3 July S. and G1 Prix Morny. Tagula was later a finethird in the 1996 G1 French 2,000 Guineas and landedanother group victory, this time over seven furlongs, before being recruited to Rathbarry Stud as areplacement for his sire Taufan. Taufan had helped transform Rathbarry into one ofIreland=s leading stallion stations, even though this sonof Stop The Music had retired without a stakes win tohis credit. He had been good enough to finish second inthe 1979 G2 Mill Reef S. and the 1980 Tote Free H.before a back injury compromised his career. Taufanhad the added attraction of coming from a family whichwas rapidly improving its status, as his dam, StolenDate, was a half-sister to Best In Show, Kentucky=sBroodmare of the Year for 1982. Taufan became leading sire by number of winners in1987 and leading sire by number of races won in 1989and 1991. He twice sired more domestic 2-year-oldwinners than any other stallion, but one thing he hadn=tdone was sire the winner of a Group 1 race until Tagulatook the 1995 Prix Morny.

Tagula wasted little time in proving a worthysubstitute for his dependable father, with a pair ofGroup 2 winners among his four first-crop stakeswinners. He has since been represented by suchtalented performers as Tax Free, King Orchisios, BeaverPatrol and Pentecost. However, like Taufan before him,Tagula had a long wait for his first Group 1 success asa sire, which finally came when Canford Cliffs took theG1 Irish 2,000 Guineas. Now a five-time Group 1 winner, Canford Cliffs was a,50,000 yearling purchase at Doncaster. He was alsothe first Group 1 winner out of a mare by Marju, winnerof the St. James=s Palace S. after finishing second inthe Derby. Other daughters of Marju have producedMarcellina, winner of the 2011 G1 Japanese 1,000Guineas, and the up-and-coming stallion Big Bad Bob. Canford Cliffs= dam Mrs Marsh, a half-sister to thevery useful Pina Colada, was unraced, but his thirddam, Triple Tipple, enjoyed substantial success inCalifornia after showing smart format up to a mile anda quarter in Europe. No doubt Canford Cliffs will eventually shuttle toAustralia, where his female line has been representedby the exceptional mare Makybe Diva, who shares thesame fifth dam, the Santa Barbara H. winner Amerigo=sFancy.

Click for brisnet.com chart. Video, sponsored by TaylorMade. It would have been tough for Ron Magers--whoanchors the desk for Chicago's top-rated newscast ABC 7, and a longtime owner/breeder--to imagine that,20 years after dropping in a $16,000 claiming slip for

Lemhi Go (LemhiGold), he=d beracing hergrandchildren. Buthe is. And lastSaturday,Magers'shomebred BannerBill (RockportHarbor), who=sdam Temporada(Summer Squall) isa daughter ofLemhi Go,

remained unbeaten in two juvenile starts with a smart 5 3/4-length victory in the $150,000 Victoria S. atWoodbine. The bay colt, who runs under the banner R Plus Partners, is trained by Ralph Biamonte and hasnow earned $126,495, following a rallying first-outvictory at Woodbine May 15 with his Victoria S. win.

Saturday=s victory was more the continuation thanthe culmination of Magers's involvement with a familythat, through two decades, has taken a circuitousroute. And that's putting it mildly. Born in California,Magers grew up in eastern Washington State andnurtured a love of racing at thelocal bush tracks as a youngster.Later, when the newsmanmoved to Chicago in the early1980s, he bought into a fewracing partnerships--more on thislater. But in 1991, he and hiswife Elise decided to strike outon their own and claim a filly atnearby Arlington Park. Theylanded on a 3-year-old fillynamed Lemhi Go, who was infor a modest $16,000 tag. Thefilly had three previous wins--allin claiming company--and was apopular commodity that day. Ron and Elise won afive-way shake for her. What happened next didn'tapproach Lava Man-ish levels, but still was unexpectedby everyone: Lemhi Go improved dramatically as shegot older and more experienced, first winning a fewallowance races, then, six months later, taking downher first stakes. During a busy 18-race campaign at 4,she added the GIII Arlington Matron H., and at five shesecured a career best in the GII La PrevoyanteInvitational H. By the time she was retired, the formerclaimer had won 12 of 41 starts and earned $330,805. AThe whole thing was lightning in a bottle,@ Magerslaughed Sunday. AShe just grew up before our eyes, and we made a lot of money with her on the track.@ Lemhi Go wasn=t done yet, though. Magers sent herto bloodstock agent Bill Betz in Kentucky to be sold asa broodmare prospect. One day, Betz called Magers upto see if he could change his mind about selling themare--at least right away.

said Magers. ASo Bill and I,and Bill=s partner at thetime, Phil Needham, bredher and sold her first foalto Prince Ahmed binSalman for $650,000 as ayearling. We kept hersecond foal, then sold herin foal to Unbridled for$400,000 [to CheveleyPark Stud].@

Lemhi Go's first foal, Triple Treasure (Gone West),raced for bin Salman's The Thoroughbred Corp., andlater went on to be the dam of the fast BobbyFrankel-trained sprinter Les Grands Trois (Officer). Hersecond foal, the one the partnership retained, wasTemporada, Banner Bill's dam. Temporada showedpromise early on, winning her debut in 1999, but abreathing problem prompted her early retirement to thebreeding shed. AThis is when the story gets crazier,@ said Magers.AWe thought Temporada=s first few foals were going tobe really good. She had a colt named Stormy Afternoon(Afternoon Deelites); he was stakes placed, but thendied of a heart attack in the summer of his 3-year-oldyear on the racetrack one morning. Then her daughterAzevedo (Mr. Greeley), who won at Churchill at firstasking in 2005, had a little knee chip taken out andwas rehabbing in Kentucky, and there was a barn fire, and she was consumed in the fire.@ It was a string of terrible luck. To make mattersworse, Magers was so confident about Azevedo=sability that, figuring he had a promising female memberof the family, he had sold Temporada. Sent through the2003 Keeneland November Sale, Temporada realized abid of $26,000 while in foal to Chief Seattle. But good news soon came. Roughly a year after thetragic barn fire, Magers=s friend Robert Marcocchio, alongtime bloodstock agent, rang him up to let him knowthat Temporada was back on the market, and had beenentered in the November sale once again. Magersjumped at the chance to buy back into the family, andin 2007 went to $19,000 to re-acquire Temporadawhile in foal to Kafwain. Marcocchio went in for 20%. The resulting Kafwain foal, the now 3-year-old filly(and aptly named) Third Chance, rewarded Magers'sfaith in the family by becoming Temporada's firststakes winner. Racing for Magers, Marcocchio and athird friend, Roe Conn, the Illinois-bred Third Chancefinished third in last year's GIII Arlington-WashingtonFuturity S., then two starts later aired by nearly sevenlengths in the restricted, $100,000 Showtime Deb S. atHawthorne. Fifth in the GII Forward Gal S. atGulfstream earlier in the year, Third Chance will run in astate-bred stakes at Arlington Park this weekend.

Banner Bill is now Temporada's second straightblack-type winner, and the sidebars continue with theVictoria S. hero. Marcocchio had won the VictoriabeforeYway back in 1982. That stakes win came byway of the colt Flying Pocket (Full Pocket), who waspartnered nearly 30 years ago with jockey David Clark.Banner Bill's rider last Saturday? David Clark. Banner Bill, it should be noted, is named after the lateBill Walsh, a friend of Magers and Marcocchio=s whopassed away a year ago. Back in the early >80s,Marcocchio had purchased a horse for Walsh namedBanner Bob (Herculean), a grandson of Bold Ruler whoproved a very good runner, winning the GII Malibu S.and GIII Hutcheson S. as a 3-year-old. Banner Bobwasn=t much of a sire, getting just a single stakeswinner from 120 foals. That stakes winner, however, was Regal Pennant, second dam of Rockport Harbor. Thus when it came time to name Temporada=s latestfoal, it seemed appropriate to call him Banner Bill.Magers and Marcocchio also offered Walsh=s widowSharon a 5% interest in Banner Bill, and, havingaccepted, Sharon was one of the crew who made thetrip to Woodbine last weekend. AI think it=s been veryrejuvenating for her,@ said Magers. Temporada currently has a yearling colt by City Zip, aweanling full-sister to Banner Bill on the ground, and isback in foal to Bernstein. Magers typically has two or three horses in trainingeach year, and has campaigned, among others, thestakes winner Song of Africa (Alzao). In addition,Magers is also involved in a number of commercialbreeding partnerships, many with Betz. If so many storylines can derive from just one mare,it shouldn't be surprising that Magers's entry into thesport back in the 1980s carries its own interesting tale.Relates Magers, "My wife and I were at Gulfstreamattending the races one day, and we were literallywalking out of the place on our way to the airport tocome home to Chicago when my wife walked acrossthe horse path and noticed something glittering. Itlooked like a diamond bracelet, a tennis bracelet, so Isaid, >It=s probably one of those fake things. Throw it inyour purse--we=re about to miss our plane--and we=ll callGulfstream later and try to figure it out.= So the nextday we called a jeweler friend of mine and had him lookat it, and he said that it was real and actually quitevaluable. I had another friend, a lawyer, call Gulfstreamand tell them we had found >something of value,= and ifanyone reports something lost, have them get in touchwith us. A few days passed, and we got a phone callfrom a guy from California who said his wife had lost atennis bracelet, and was offering a $2,000 reward forit. He sent us a picture of her wearing it, and sureenough, it was the same bracelet. We told him to justsend the reward to one of our favorite charities--theGreater Chicago Food Depository--so he=d get adeduction and his bracelet, and everybody would feelgood about it." Cont. p4

So how did this lead to Magers owning horses?AWell, not long after that, I got a call from a guy whosaid, >You don=t know me, but I know you,=@ Magerssaid. AHe said, >I know your lawyer, and he told meabout the diamond bracelet, and he told me you wereinterested in horses, and we have a racing partnership. And we want you to get involved. The way we figureit, anyone stupid enough to give that bracelet backneeds to be in racing!=@ And when Magers bought his first horse--Lemhi Go--he duly dubbed his operation Diamond Stable, whoseblack silks featured a white diamond on the back. -Lucas Marquardt
