Anyone who looked only at the bare facts of ProudCitizen=s racing record might have struggled to enthuseabout this young stallion when he started out at AirdrieStud in 2004 After all he had managed to win onlythree of his 16 starts and gained only one stakes suc-cess He had also failed to reach the first three in anyof the five Grade I races he had contested during hisfinal year on the track However breeders with an eye on the ball will haverealised that Proud Citizen represented a very worth-while gamble Despite starting as many as 16 times for D WayneLukas Proud Citizen had been far from unscathed bythe rigors of racing on dirt--rigors which sadly havebeen highlighted all too often in recent Triple Crownevents The son of Gone West had looked an excitingprospect in the June of his juvenile campaign espe-cially when he cruised home nearly 10 lengths clear invery fast time in a 5 12-furlong maiden at BelmontUnfortunately he didn=t help himself when he gradu-ated to graded company He leapt in the air at the startwhen a hot favorite for the GII Sanford S and then lostall chance when he again broke in the air in the GIHopeful S Perhaps he had physical excuses too as hethen had knee surgery which kept him off the track forjust over seven months

Although the Triple Crown events looked a forlornhope when a fading Proud Citizen beat only one homein the GI Santa Anita Derby on his return Lukas con-jured a rapid return to form Back in action two weekslater Proud Citizen overcame unruly behaviour at thegate in the GII Lexington S to lead throughout for adecisive win The form of this win made him no betterthan a 23-1 chance in a Derby market headed by CameHome but Proud Citizen chased War Emblem from thestart and kept on well for second prompting Lukas topredict that Awe are going to see and hear a lot abouthim A post position of 12 in a 13-runner Preakness Sdidn=t help Proud Citizen and the effort of getting toWar Emblem=s quarters in the stretch told in the closingstages where he lost second to the unconsideredMagic Weisner Lack of stamina seemed the most likelyexplanation for the way Proud Citizen faded to fifth inthe Belmont S but another reason quickly emerged ashe had to be vanned off with the problem proving tobe a condylar fracture which required the insertion offour screws Perhaps it would have been best had Proud Citizenbeen retired then but he returned after an absence ofnearly 10 months The best he could manage in sixstarts in graded company was his fourth in the GI Met-ropolitan H and his only success came on the oneoccasion he dropped out of graded company in a Chur-chill Downs allowance over 72 furlongs An anti-climatic final season on the track represents asignificant handicap for many young stallions but thegood-looking Proud Citizen had a couple of things in hisfavor For a start sons of Gone West had earned theMill Ridge stallion an enviable reputation as a sire ofsires In 2003 alone we had seen Grand Slam repre-sented by the Breeders= Cup Sprint winner Cajun Beatwhile Elusive Quality added to his reputation to theextent that his fee was raised to $50000 Mr Greeleyalso did well increasing his total of Grade I winners tofive from five crops of racing age and over in EuropeZafonic had added the Group 1 winners Zafeen and ZeeZee Top to his tally

It wasn=t just the top half of Proud Citizen=s pedigreewhich suggested he had considerable potential Hisdam Drums of Freedom was a half-sister to threeFrench group performers while his second dam Dan-seuse Etoile was a winning sister to the remarkable LaPrevoyante who clocked up 25 victories before dyingfrom a ruptured lung on her 39th start La Prevoyantehad compiled a perfect record during a 12-race juvenilecampaign in Canada and the US where her victoriesincluded the Schuylerville S Spinaway S Matron SFrizette S Selima S and Gardenia S La Prevoyantehad every right to be exceptional as she was by theoutstanding Buckpasser out of a sister to the similarlyoutstanding Northern Dancer It almost goes without saying that Northern Dancerisn=t the only notable stallion from this family Danehillhad become Europe=s highest-priced stallion in 2003and Machiavellian had also become one of Europe=smost sought-after stallions No wonder Airdrie wasprepared to buy a majority interest in Proud Citizen andthe stud=s clientele initially supported him stronglyAfter a first book of 157 mares Proud Citizen covered136 mares in 2005 but as so often happens nowa-days it was a different story in his third and fourthyears when he attracted 64 and 82 mares respec-tively The rise from third to fourth year was fuelledpartly by a reduction in fee from $17500 to $12500and partly by his first yearlings which sold for up to$250000 in 2006 No doubt the nine-year-old stallionis busier than ever this year thanks to his third-placefinish on last year=s freshman list Proud Citizen lost no time in showing that he canpass on his own precocity At last year=s NewmarketJuly meeting his son River Proud was beaten only ashort head in the G2 July S and his high-priced daugh-ter Francesca d=Gorgio was beaten 12 lengths in theG2 Cherry Hinton S River Proud went on to become aGroup 3 winner and Francesca d=Gorgio contested Sat-urday=s 1000 Guineas (in which she showed her sire=stendency to get upset in the stalls)
