Mucho Mas Macho (Macho Uno) looked to beovermatched in Saturday’s GII Fort Lauderdale S.at Gulfstream Park, and most punters agreed, sending him off at 41-1. But the 4-year-old camewith a sparkling turn of foot in the final eighth ofa mile to lite up the tote and trigger a four-figureexacta and five-figure tris and supers.

"Gai starts in October," Cox noted. "No one worksharder in this business than Gai Waterhouse, bar none. She sees soft patches in the market and gets in." Yearlings expected to head overseas include the eightpurchased for a total of A$2,100,000 by the HongKong Jockey Club. The strength of the Australiancurrency did not deter bidding from foreign interests. "The percentage of overseas buyers is up from lastyear," Cox said. "Our dollar has been strong for severalyears now and it is seen as the norm, rather than theexception. We've had tremendous support from HongKong. We've been the beneficiary of 15-20 years ofdrawing on the best bloodlines in the world fromAmerica, Europe and Japan, and I think that's reflectedin the results." Magic Millions' popular Session Five gets underwaySunday at 11 a.m. local time. Complete results areavailable on www.magicmillions.com.au.

Fast Times at Gold Coast... Lot 597, a Fastnet Rock (Aus) filly consigned byTyreel Stud, had an attractive page and set an earlystandard during the night session that would beunmatched. Produced by a stakes-placed sibling toStarspangledbanner (Aus) (Choisir {Aus}), a championsprinter in Australia and Europe, the bay was at thecenter of a bidding clash between Sydney-based trainerChris Waller and his Melbourne counterpart PeterMoody. Waller eventually prevailed at A$500,000 andsaid that he would put together a partnership to racethe filly. "She should be easy to sell," Waller said. "She seemsspecial, a lovely horse with an excellent pedigree. She'sby Fastnet Rock out of a speed mare andStarspangledbanner sticks out. These pedigrees arehard to get and you have to pay more to get intothem." Immediately after signing the ticket, Waller received abottle of Johnnie Walker Blue, courtesy of MagicMillions. Asked if that would be opened on the night,Waller quipped, "Whoever buys into her can have it." Tyreel Stud offered the filly on behalf of breederMakybe. Her dam produced a Choisir filly Aug. 28.

No 'Doute' About It... The progeny of Redoute's Choice (Aus) have been indemand at this venue, and lot 602 set the standard forhis sire Saturday night when bloodstock agent DavidIngordo made the winning A$460,000 bid. Consignedby Newhaven Park, the bay is the first foal from Hades(Aus) (Encosta de Lago {Aus}), who is herself adaughter of the swift Hasna (Aus) (Snippets {Aus}).After finishing a troubled third in the 2003 G1 GoldenSlipper, the bay annexed the G1 Sires' Produce S. andG1 Champagne S. She earned over A$1.2 million andwas named Australia's champion juvenile. "He's a fine horse and we=re very happy to get him,"Ingordo said. "He comes from a breeder who does anexcellent job, and they had one of the best groupshere."

Newhaven Park, operated by the Kelly family sincethe 1920s, is located in Boorowa, New South Wales. The colt's third damThey Say (Thirty SixRed) was a winner inthe U.S. beforemaking her way toAustralia. Americain Anthem… World traveller Americain (Dynaformer--America {Ire},by Arazi) is just about to embark on his breeding careerin his Kentucky birthplace, but the dark bay stallion willlater shuttle to the scene of his greatest triumph. AdamSangster's Swettenham Stud, based in Nagambie,Victoria, will stand the 2010 G1 Melbourne Cup heroduring the Southern Hemisphere breeding season. "We'd been interested in the horse for quite sometime," Sangster confirmed. "He's a bit of an attractiondown here. We've stood Melbourne Cup winnersbefore--Jeune and At Talaq--and he does have a qualityabout him. Originally campaigned in France by his breeders,Alain and Gerard Wertheimer, Americain secured the2009 G2 Prix Vicomtesse Vigier and was later sold to agroup of Australians including Gerald Ryan and Kevinand Colleen Bamford. He captured the G2 PrixKergorlay the following year before winning the G3Geelong Cup in his first start down under. Two weekslater, Americain posted a stylish win in the "race thatstops a nation" at Flemington (video). He won 11 of 34overall starts and amassed over $5.78 million.

Stallions who throw fast-maturing offspring havebeen especially popular in recent years in Australasia, but Sangster believes Americain can forge a new path. "There is [an emphasis on precocity], but he is out ofan Arazi mare, so some of them might come up early,"

he said. "It is a goodWertheimer family. " Americain's dam America,a half-sister to Group 2 andmultiple Group 1-placedMajorien (GB)(Machiavellian), collected theG2 Prix de Malleret and G3 Prix Vanteaux as a3-year-old. "Standing a stayer is a bitlike a government bond--you

trust that it will eventually pay dividends," Sangsterspeculated. "There is a focus on 2-year-old racing here, but there is a lot of prize money for middle-distancehorses as well. While it may be a challenge, he is a verygood-looking horse with an excellent turn of foot." Americain will stand at Swettenham for A$12,500.

NYSRWB ORDERING NECROPSIESby Mike Kane The New York State Racing and Wagering Board hasordered necropsies of all future fatal racing breakdownson the inner dirt track at Aqueduct after three horsesdied from injuries suffered at the Queens track in aspan of three racing days this week. In addition, it said that bodies of two horses that diedfrom injuries on the inner track will be examined. A year ago, when 21 horses suffered fatal injuries inraces at Aqueduct, Governor Andrew Cuomo appointedthe New York Task Force on Racehorse Health andSafety to investigate the matter. The task force'slengthy report, released to the public Sept. 28, made anumber of recommendations, including necropsies. Theboard quickly adopted many of thoserecommendations, but said in an Oct. 11 press releasethat increased and enhanced necropsy procedureswould require collaboration with the New York RacingAssociation. Following the death of Pleasantfriday, who waseuthanized Thurs., Jan. 10, the board decided toimmediately require necropsies following allracing-related deaths. Bomber Boy and Wildcat's Smilewere euthanized after suffering catastrophic injuries inseparate incidents Sunday, Jan. 6. The three deaths brought to four the number ofhorses who have died as the result of racing injuriessince Aqueduct's inner-track season opened on Dec. 12. According the board's database, El Machowas euthanized on Dec. 14, the day after he sufferedleg injuries in the first race of the program. Four horses, Paci Di Notte, Missile Motor,Withalittlebit and Gultopper, died during Aqueduct'smain-track season that ran from Nov. 3-Dec. 9. "The Racing and Wagering Board continues to closelymonitor and investigate the circumstances of everybreakdown at Aqueduct," board spokesman Lee Parksaid in a statement. "Comprehensive investigativereports for the four equine fatalities from the inner trackmeet are being completed by Board staff. "Necropsies for two horses that have died atAqueduct--Pleasantfriday and Gultopper--were orderedby the Board because circumstances of those incidentsraised red flags with investigators and required moreinformation. Going forward, the Board is orderingnecropsies for all horses that are fatally injured whileracing on the inner track at Aqueduct. The Racing andWagering Board and the forthcoming GamingCommission will continue to work with NYRA toestablish a consistent procedure for the logistics ofnecropsies as recommended by the Task Force onRacehorse Health & Safety. Dynamic Sky tracked behind the leaders downthe backstretch, and was unable to find racing room atthe top of the lane and was swung out five wide. Heclosed quickly thereafter and rallied nicely to reel in hisstablemate. AIt was a big race,@ trainer Mark Casse said.AI was a little disappointed he got a little hot today, which he has to overcome if he is going to be a Derbyhorse. But it was hot today, so we=ll give him a pass.@Casse continued, ASky Commander is a pretty decenthorse, too. The time was definitely respectable, because Luis [Contreras] had nowhere to go and hadto take him back and go around horses nearing thestretch. That cost him a little momentum, but he wasable to overcome it.@ Casse added that Dynamic Skywill be considered for the GIII Sam F. Davis S. here onFeb. 2.
