st Annual Benefit
Raffle Dinner is right around the corner on September 7. We will need a lot of help to put on the fundraiser. Remember, the purpose of the Benefit Raffle Dinner is to help the
mentally challenged citizens of our community, so please help by purchasing a ticket or helping to sell tickets. Four organizations will be the beneficiaries of our donations: TARC, Options, Special Olympics and Evergreen Life Services. For more information on how to help, please attend the next meeting on Tuesday, August 6
at 6:00pm at the council home.
The August social will feature the council’s new insurance agent, Stuart Newman. If you have any questions about your individual policies, or what new policies are available that may fit your needs, please plan on attending the social on Wednesday, August 21. Another important date for the month is the KC Mass & Rosary on Sunday, August 18 at Holy Ghost Church. The Rosary will begin at 8:45am. JFK Council 2952 will be sponsoring a Veterans Breakfast on Thursday, August 22, at the Michael J. Kenney Center on Coleman Ave. in Hammond. All council veterans and their spouses/guests are invited to attend the breakfast, which will begin at 8:00am.

“Food of the Month” Program From the Tangi Food Pantry website……. “Our Food of the Month program has been a great success for the past 3 years and we thank everyone who has participated! Churches, businesses, and individuals have been loyally donating and we are so grateful for their help. Below is our list for the upcoming year. We hope that it will be both easy and fun to help feed the need in Tangipahoa. Keep this list in a convenient place so it will be on hand when grocery shopping. Your donations can be dropped off at the Tangi Food Pantry Distribution Site from 1pm-4pm on Tuesdays & Thursdays, or call 985-429-8551 so we can arrange a convenient time for you to deliver your food items. Thanks so much or your support!”

St. Rose of Lima
Historians remember St. Rose of Lima for her piety and chastity. Born in 1586 in Lima, Peru to Spanish colonists, and named Isabel Flores de Olivia, she was exceptionally beautiful. Her beauty was so great that she was nicknamed "Rose," a name that remains with her to this day. According to legend, a servant had a vision where her face turned into a rose. At her confirmation in 1597, she officially took the name of Rose. From an early age, Rose
wanted to become a nun. She often prayed and fasted in secret. She performed secret penances, some of which were painful and severe. She performed daily adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and took daily communion. As a young woman, her beauty began to attract suitors. To deter these men, St. Rose marred her face, rubbing it with pepper to make it blister. She cropped her hair short. Her parents opposed her plan to take a vow of chastity. This resulted in a clash of wills, because her parents wanted her to marry. Her father eventually relented and gave her a room to herself. St. Rose kept herself cloistered in her room, spending long periods in prayer. It was said she slept only two hours per night so as to have more time for prayer. She quit eating meat altogether, an extreme dietary restriction for that time. When she turned 20, she was permitted to join the Third Order of St. Dominic. She continued a life of extreme prayer, fasting and penance. On one occasion she burned her hands as a self-imposed act of penance. She was known to wear a heavy silver crown, with spikes that could pierce her flesh. The spikes reminded her of the Crown of Thorns. At one point, one of the spikes become so lodged in her skull that the crown was removed with great difficulty. St. Rose died in on August 25, 1617, at the age of 31. According to legend, she accurately predicted the date of her death. Her funeral was a major event attended by all the city's authorities. Pope Clement IX beatified her in 1667 and Pope Clement X recognized her as a saint, canonizing her in 1671. Her feast day is August 23 around the world, although some countries, like Peru, celebrate her on August 30. St. Rose is the patroness of embroiderers, gardeners, florists, those who suffer ridicule for their piety, and people who suffer family problems. https://www.catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=446

Louisiana Super Plants
The Louisiana Super Plant program is an educational and marketing campaign that highlights tough and beautiful plants that perform well in Louisiana landscapes. Louisiana Super Plants have a proven track record having gone through several years of university evaluations and
observations. Louisiana Super Plants are “university tested and industry approved”. It’s tough to be a Louisiana Super Plant! Each Super Plant must have at least 2 years of rigorous evaluations and have a proven track record under North and South Louisiana growing conditions. Super Plants must prove hardy across the state. Super Plants must be easily produced and available for all green industry wholesalers and retailers to market and sale. Louisiana Super Plants are selected 1-2 years in advance of release to the public. The Louisiana Super Plant Selection Committee, composed of LSU AgCenter research and extension personnel, select plants based upon observations made in replicated plots and demonstration trials across the state. The Louisiana Super Plant Advisory Committee, composed of green industry personnel (producers, retailers, and landscapers) from across the state, meet with the Plant Selection Committee for further scrutiny of the plant’s landscape ability and marketability. This selection process gives each Super Plant the combined rating of “university tested and industry approved”. August – Month of the Immaculate Heart
The month of August is dedicated to the
Immaculate Heart of Mary. Since the 16th century,
Catholic piety has assigned entire months to special
devotions. The month of August is traditionally
dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The
physical heart of Mary is venerated (and not adored
as the Sacred Heart of Jesus is) because it is united
to her person and is the seat of her love (especially
for her divine Son), virtue, and inner life. Such
devotion is an incentive to a similar love and virtue.
This devotion has received new emphasis in this
century from the visions given to Lucy Dos Santos,
oldest of the visionaries of Fatima, in her convent in
Tuy, in Spain, in 1925 and 1926. In the visions, Our
Lady asked for the practice of the Five First
Saturdays to help make amends for the offenses
committed against her heart by the blasphemies and
ingratitude of men. The practice parallels the
devotion of the Nine First Fridays in honor of the
Sacred Heart.
On October 31, 1942, Pope Pius XII made a
solemn Act of Consecration of the Church and the
whole world to the Immaculate Heart. Let us
remember this devotion year-round, but particularly
through the month of August.

Consecration to the Immaculate Heart
Pope Paul VI, on the floor of the
Vatican Council at the close of
the third session, renewed
publicly the consecration of the
Church and the world to Mary's
Immaculate Heart. He said that
his thoughts turned to the whole
world "which our venerated
predecessor Pius XII . . . not
without inspiration from on high,
solemnly consecrated to the Immaculate Heart of
Mary. . . . O Virgin Mary, Mother of the Council, to
you we recommend the entire Church." When he
visited Fatima on May 13, 1967, the same Pope
recalled this "consecration which we ourselves have
renewed on November 21, 1964 — we exhort all the
sons of the Church to renew personally their
consecration to the Immaculate Heart of the Mother
of the Church and to bring alive this most noble act
of veneration through a life ever more in accord
with the divine will and in a spirit of filial service
and of devout imitation of their heavenly Queen."
Before making a consecration it is most desirable
to make a careful preparation extending over some
period of time. One good way to make that
preparation is described in the last part of St. Louis
de Montfort's True Devotion book.
The most essential thing is not making an act of
consecration, with or without some solemnity,
though that is important. The essential thing is to
live that consecration.
Living a consecration could be described as
following three attitudes or spirits:
Union — Imitation of Jesus and Mary, so as to
become like them, and trying to develop as constant
as possible a realization of His and her presence.
Dependence — Give to Jesus and Mary the
right to dispose of everything we have, temporal
and spiritual.
Obedience — Jesus and Mary have the right to
ask us to do anything at all, even without reward. In
consecration, we recognize that right, give it on a
basis of love, and plan to carry it out with fullest
generosity.
St. Maximilian Kolbe liked to speak of the
relation of consecration to our baptismal promises,
in which we promised to renounce satan and all his
works, and to follow Jesus, by whom we are
"sealed" in baptism as His property. Consecration is
the fullest kind of response to and carrying out of
these promises. Mary, in view of her Immaculate
Conception, was most fitted to respond most fully,
and that she did, with a fullness and perfection
beyond our ability to visualize — for we recall that
Pius IX told us that even at the start of her
existence, her holiness was so great that "none
greater under God can be thought of, and no one but
God can comprehend it."
