WELCOME TO THE TRON SUMMER SEASONI always feel that the Tron distinguishes itself from every other theatresimply by the diverse range of shows it presents. We are ever-mindfulof the very eclectic tastes amongst Glasgow theatre-goers and try torespond accordingly. This summer programme certainly exemplifiesthat diversity.

On the one hand we have a cutting edge and very provocative seriesof new work and debate in our Mayfesto programme, as well as playsby the heavyweight of contemporary English dramatists Howard Barker. At the other end of the spectrum we present Hardeep SinghKohli’s Indian Takeaway together with, on a slightly more bizarreculinary note, Tron Theatre Company’s own summer delight, CannibalWomen Of Mars, which is a mad intergalactic rock’n’roll romp withgreat songs by Belle and Sebastian’s Mick Cooke (no pun intended).

Other visiting theatre company highlights include Some OtherMother, which will be staged during a very busy Refugee Week; andthe return of the celebrated Irish company Blue Raincoat with the final(and best) part of their Flann O’Brien trilogy, The Poor Mouth.

In terms of work by and for young people, Tron Skillshops re-stage oneof their favourite pieces from the past ten years, Multiplex; we onceagain play host to the Merchant City Festival with a programme ofwork for family audiences (as well as a series of indoor performancesas part of Surge); and Scottish Youth Theatre round off the season withtheir production of a modern Scottish classic, Mary Queen of ScotsGot Her Head Chopped Off.

Plenty to choose from…I hope to see you down here.

Andy Arnold ARTISTIC DIRECTOR 3

We will be installing a new box office system tocoincide with the launch of our Summer seasonbrochure. From a customer perspective, therewill be no significant change to the way in whichwe operate, and, if you’ve given us permission tohold your data on our system, then this willautomatically be transferred to the new system.

We hope people will notice an improvement inrelation to how online ticketing is managed. Ournew system is real-time; it will allow you to selectyour own seats; to see stage views from yourselected seat; and to manage your own customeraccount. We’re also dropping our onlinetransaction fee of 50p.

We’re working very hard to ensure a smoothtransition from the old system, and wouldwelcome any feedback that customers may wantto share with us about their experience of theprocess, or of using the new system online. Youcan email us on [email protected] or call0141 552 4267.

Victory is perhaps the most popular andenduring of all Barker’s plays. Set in theimmediate aftermath of the restoration ofCharles II, the play charts the journey ofthe widow of a leading parliamentarian,Bradshaw, as she gathers up the pieces ofher disinterred and dismembered husband’sbody. An affirmation of the human spirit intimes of chaos, Victory’s ‘dark matter’ isshot through with flashes of wit andhumour as Barker explores the outerreaches of human behaviour in the midstof political, social and moral upheaval.

Howard Barker, poet, radical theatrepioneer, and one of Britain’s greatestliving playwrights, forges into his fifthdecade of prolific, challenging andhighly original theatre writing. Tocelebrate the long association theROYAL CONSERVATOIRE OF SCOTLANDhas with his work, they revisit twopivotal pieces in the development ofhis unique voice in partnership withthe TRON THEATRE.

My experience of the education programmeat the Tron Theatre has been nothing shortof life-changing. Before January of last year,I had barely set foot inside a theatre, letalone stood upon a stage. But now, less than18 months later, I am a member of twodifferent acting and performance companieswithin the Tron; have starred in severalproductions; have collaborated in writingvarious pieces of theatrical work and been

given the opportunity to learn about the art oftheatre-making. The supportive environmentpermits an atmosphere in which creativity, freedom of expression and self discovery areable to flourish…I feel very privileged and verygrateful to have been afforded these opportunitiesat such a young age, and with no previousexperience. The work they do is essential.
