Like any organization, there are things about any church that are indispensable. Most people, of course, want to admit it, but it is no less true. There are things that we have and activities that we do thatwhen it comes down to itare indispensable; they are not essential to the ministry of the Church. In a time when diminishing resources are impacting every aspect of our lives, it shouldn’t surprise us that churches are also being affected. In such times, congregations have to think about what they believe is their central calling, their core values so as to use all that they have and all that they are for the common ministry of that particular church. As we enter the second trimester of the year, it is gratifying to see all of our ministries going strong and being faithfully supported by your time, talents and treasure. That is a gift of God and a witness to your relationship with the God revealed in Jesus Christ! But sometimes, the question of what is and is not essential has less to do with a church’s budget and more to do with the moment in time. Several years ago killer tornadoes tore through many of our Southern states; one of the worst hit areas was Tuscaloosa, Alabama--Melanie's hometown and the place where both of us went to college. In a time of great heartbreak and uncertainty, all of the downtown churches of Tuscaloosa made a decision about how to respond to the disaster. Every church had decided that a bunch of things were indeed dispensable. Methodists and Baptists, Episcopalians and Roman Catholics, and, yes, Presbyterians saidfor the time beingthat a lot of what they were doing was no longer indispensable. All of these congregations, together numbering well over 10,000 members, decided to stop all activities, excepting one: all worship services would continue uninterrupted. Besides the worship of God, all other meetings, ministries and activities were cancelled to further notice; they were cancelled so all of that time and energy could be spent assisting those who had been hurt by the tornadoes. These churches have stopped everything except worship and service. The service of God and the service of those in need would continue. Take a moment and think about that: worship and service, these two alone, at the end of the day (what seemed like the end of the world for thousands of souls in that wrecked part of the country), were deemed indispensable. It is the stewardship of our lives and of our gifts that makes worship and service possible every week. Your faithfulness is essential to us keeping the main thing as the main thing. At Trinity Presbyterian Church, the Spirit of God is doing amazing and wonderful things in our midst-- consider the power of our Lenten, Holy Week and Easter worship services and special events. Through education and music, worship and mission, and in every age groupChrist is transforming lives! I am profoundly grateful to God for his faithfulness to us this year and for the rich gifts each of our faithful members brings to our church family. Yet, I am struck by the lesson to be learned from that particular moment in Tuscaloosa. If everything had to be dispensed with, what must be retained? I think those disciples in Alabama got it exactly right: eternal life is knowing the God revealed in Jesus Christ and the religion that God delights in is manifested through service. Trinity Tidings An Inviting Community Following Christ For Life

Volume 50, Issue 4 April 2016

And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have

sent. The Gospel of John 17:3

Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?’ And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.’ Matthew 25:37-40

Indispensable! Like any organization, there are things about any church that are indispensable. Most people, of course, want to admit it, but it is no less true. There are things that we have and activities that we do that—when it comes down to it—are indispensable; they are not essential to the ministry of the Church. Methodists and Baptists, Episcopalians and Roman Catholics, and, yes, Presbyterians said—for the time being—that a lot of what they were doing was no longer indispensable. Adult Education

This coming April 2016, we have three interesting Adult Education events:

1. On April 10, Nancy O'Dowd will talk on depression, dementia, and normal aging.

2. On April 17, Gerald (Jay) Darling will talk about the Christian message in Springsteen's Music.

3. On April 24, Reverend Gruver will conclude his series on Starting the Conversation,

a discussion between Adult Parents and Adult Children regarding their futures. ———————————————————————————————————————————————————

Gerald Darling: Springsteen’s Christian Message?

Is there some underlying theological meaning in Springsteen's lyrics? Is there a Christian message in

Springsteen's music. Jay Darling says so and he has the experience and qualification.

Gerald Darling:

-- is a practicing attorney with the firm of Archer and Greiner in

Haddonfield, N.J.

-- an elder at Moorestown Presbyterian Church

-- finished his Masters in Theological Studies from Palmer Seminary by writing an extensive graduating

thesis on the theology of Springsteen's lyrics over his

now 50 plus year career.

JOIN US on April 17, 2016, 11 am at the Community Room right after the coffee hour for an intriguing

and interesting discussion. Everyone is welcome. Invite your friends!

Children and Youth Ministries

Church School Linda Craven has graciously agreed to take over the roll of Church School Coordinator, as Ben Rieth, though

still teaching, will retire from a position he has held a number of times since joining Trinity over 25 years

ago.

The Children's Ministries Committee would like to thank each and every teacher for their dedication and

willingness to serve. We would also like to thank Ben Rieth for his many years as Church School

Coordinator. Our thriving program is in need of volunteers! If you enjoy working with children, and have as

little as one Sunday a month to spare, come join our team! Feel free to call Ann Smolsky (856-429-1241) to

discuss options.

Many Thanks To...

In Other Church School News... The children in Witherspoon are collecting coins for "In

Charity's Shoes" Elaine Schon made coin bags that the

children took home with them. We had 5 interns from

Urban Promise International come and talk to the children

about their native lands. They taught them a song and a

game. We will be collecting coins through May.

Youth Group

The youth group would like to thank all

of you for your generous donations to

the 30 Hour Famine. Without your help,

this event wouldn't have been

possible. The juices kept us going and

the meal was enjoyed by all at the end of

our time. It was a great time of standing

in solidarity with our brothers and sisters

who go hungry every day, while also

serving our community and the greater

world through volunteering at local

organizations, packaging over a

thousand meals that went to Haiti,

collecting dry goods for the Cherry Hill Food pantry and donating over $10,000 dollars to World Vision to

stop hunger. We also ended our time with a meaningful hour of spending time with God in prayer

stations. On behalf of not only us, but the fourteen churches who gathered that weekend. THANK YOU!

Library Corner

As a follow-up to Reverend Craven’s message on

Women’s Sunday, this month the Trinity Library is

featuring books from our women’s studies section.

This shelf of the library is located on the back wall to

the left of the computer.

All of the following books include questions for

discussion that can be used for individual reflection or

group studies:

Bad Girls of the Bible

And What We Can Learn from

Them By Liz Curtis Higgs

Curtis was motivated to write this

book because she had trouble

identifying with the female role

models in the Bible: “Sarah was

so faithful. Esther was so

courageous. Mary was so innocent.” The author’s aim

is to show how “the Bad Girls of the past can teach us

to be Good Girls in the present.”

Each chapter begins with a fictional story in a

contemporary setting (Delilah becomes a hair dresser

named Lila) and concludes with reflections on the

relevant Biblical passages and what we can learn from

them. Other “bad girls” featured are Eve, Potiphar’s

wife, Lot’s wife, the woman at the well, Sapphira,

Rahab, Jezebel and Michal.

Helpmates, Harlots, Heroes, Women’s Stories in

the Hebrew Bible By Alice Ogden Bellis

This book contains an in-depth

description of all of the women

who appear in the Old

Testament. The first chapter is

about the story of Eve in Gene-

sis. The following chapters go

through each of the books of the

Old Testament in order and de-

scribe every woman mentioned

in the text. There is also a thor-

ough discussion of the role of

women at the time.

Strong Was Her Faith

Women of the New Testament By J. Ellsworth Kalas

This book focuses on women of

great faith who, as the author

describes them, “were crucial, in

ways both obvious and

understated, to the story of the

New Testament.” In each of the

twelve chapters, Kalas examines

the Scriptures to see what we can learn from the

woman featured. Two of the chapters focus on Mary

the mother of Jesus. Other women featured include

Elizabeth, Anna, Martha, Mary Magdalene, Dorcas,

and Lydia.

In addition to a number of other books dealing with

Biblical women in general, the women’s library shelf

also contains books devoted to a specific woman.

These include Deborah, Esther, Eve, Leah, Lydia,

Michal (wife of David), Priscilla, Rebekah, Ruth and

Zipporah (wife of Moses).

If you would like us to purchase a particular book

for the Trinity Library, stop by on Sunday or

contact Dottie Dunfee ([email protected]).

Homeless Hospitality Network What is it? From November to May, 12 homeless men are housed

in participating congregations. They are provided with warm meals, a safe place

to sleep and caring fellowship and support. The men attend counseling classes

on money management, job, interpersonal and basic computer skills as well as

drug and alcohol support groups.

When it is? Sunday, April 10th - 17th

Where is it? We share this mission program with St. Andrew's Methodist Church in Cherry Hill. The men

will be housed at St. Andrew's for the four (yes that's right 4!) weeks. Trinity will supply overnight and social

hosts and meals the forth week: April 10th to 17th.

Who can help? Everyone.

How can you help? There are a variety of ways to serve in the program this year:

Serve as an over-night host--We need two Trinity men on each night. Grab a friend and share the

mission!

Serve as a social host--watch a game, shoot the breeze, play some cards with the guys.

Serve a home cooked meal-we'll need--2 breakfast, 2 lunches, and 7 dinners total.

Shop or donate cold cuts for weekday lunches.

Drive the men to AA or NA meetings (evenings)--we need 2-3 drivers, usually just to St. Bart's.

Organize a Social Event (Movie, Bowling, Shopping, Sport).

Trinity has a long-standing relationship with IHOC and the Homeless Hospitality Program. For many years,

members of Trinity have generously given their time and talents to this program. Your love and support

can help rebuild lives. We ask that you prayerfully consider helping this year.

Please visit the Mission & Outreach Table in Fellowship Hall for sign-ups and more information through

April 10th. Contact Jenny Stark at [email protected] or 609-680-6090 to get more information.

WATER-WATER EVERYWHERE BUT NONE TO DRINK

This could be the message if we didn’t have plants like American Water Works to

make sure that our drinking water is not tainted with rust, pollution or some other

harmful addition. The Trinity Daytime Men’s Group is making a field trip to the

New Jersey American Water Plant on Tuesday April 19th @ 10 AM. We will be car

pooling to the location in Delran, NJ. We plan to leave the Church parking lot at 9:15

AM SHARP. We must register and have personnel identification for security reasons

to help keep the reliability of our drinking water protected.

Sign ups will be done at the March regular meeting, but others interested in joining

this trip should contact Ed Mitchell 856-753-0680 or e-mail [email protected].

It would be great to have a large group interested in learning more about how our

drinking water gets to our homes. This could be the beginning of your SUPER

COLOSSAL DAY.

The Cherry Hill Food Pantry Needs your Help!

On Sunday, April 17 the Mission and Outreach Committee will be handing out

bags that we hope you will fill with your food donations. Any amount of canned

goods and paper goods will be greatly appreciated(no glass containers). The bags

should be returned the next Sunday, April 24. If you miss that date, bring the

donation the next week. If you would rather donate money, write a check to The

Cherry Hill Food Pantry and put it in the collection tray. We do this bag collection

only once a year. Thanks for your help. Any questions email Elissa Goss

at [email protected].

COLLECTION OF MOTHERS MATTER ITEMS TO CONTINUE THIS MONTH!

We are continuing to collect health and beauty items for the Mother’s Day gift basket project sponsored by

the Lauren Rose Albert Foundation (LRAF). Mothers Matter assembles gift packages filled with women’s

health and beauty care products and then distributes them to women facing difficult challenges. Packages are

delivered to women’s shelters, children’s pediatric hospital wards and centers, day care centers and other

facilities and agencies. Each gift carries the message that “Mothers Matter” and for many, this is their only

Mother’s Day present. LRAF has also added “comfort” gift bags into the program that are distributed to

Virtua/Fox Chase Cancer Program and MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper.

The Trinity PW Circles will continue to collect for Mothers Matter gift baskets at their meetings. In

addition, there will be a large basket at Church located between the Sanctuary and Fellowship Hall

(underneath the PW Bulletin Board) for donated items. We appreciate the support of all Church

members. The basket will be there until April 17th.

Items that can be donated are posted on the PW Bulletin Board. Thank you in advance for your generosity!!!

Please join us to help assemble the baskets at their headquarters in Sewell on Saturday, April 23rd. We will

meet at the church at 11:00 to carpool, bring a light lunch, and we will return to the church around 3:30. It’s a

great volunteer activity and very rewarding. If you prefer to drive from your home, contact me for directions.

Please contact Jan Caffrey at (856) 667-3687 or [email protected] if planning to attend. We would love to

have you join us.

MOTHER’S DAY CARDS TO SUPPORT HEALTHY WOMEN

HEALTHY FAMILIES

Healthy Women Healthy Families Project supports life-changing activities with Global

Partner churches of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). The funds generated provide

support for Christ-centered prevention programs and care. This is a year-round

ministry. Programs include prenatal and obstetrical care, health and hygiene

education, fistula repair surgery, trauma healing, nutrition, early health screening and

primary care for children, and food security.

This is a mission project of our PW Circles. We will be offering a newly designed Mother’s Day card after

service on April 17, April 24 and May 1. A donation of $10 is suggested but donations of other amounts are

welcome. This is an easy and meaningful way to honor special women in your life (mothers, daughters,

daughters-in-law, sisters) and also help protect and restore the health of women and children in other

countries. Any questions, please contact Jan Caffrey at [email protected] or 856-667-3687.

Meet Our New Members !

Rachel Koon

New member Rachel Koon is already a familiar face in Sunday worship;

she’s been singing in the choir since the week after her first visit to

Trinity!

Rachel, who was born in County Cavan, Ireland, transferred to Trinity

from the First Presbyterian Church of Allentown, PA. She now resides in

Mount Laurel. Her daughter and family are Cherry Hill residents.

Rachel traveled the world with her late husband; he worked overseas for

the federal government for more than 45 years. She loves classical

concert music – vocal or instrumental – and would love to find someone

to attend concerts with. She’s also a “serious knitter.”

Asked why she chose Trinity, Rachel said, “I did visit a few churches,

and quite frankly, it came down to the choir and music program.” As

someone with a lifelong involvement in music, she said she loves the

energy that Lisa Marcelli brings to the music program, as well as the music selections that enhance our

worship each Sunday. Welcome Rachel, and thank you for sharing your talents with us!

Brittany Bohan and Michael Hazeltine

Welcome to Brittany Bohan and Michael Hazeltine! Brittany and Michael

currently reside in Haddonfield, NJ where they have been for about three

years. Brittany grew up in Pennsauken, NJ and Michael was born in North

Carolina and moved to Pennsylvania to attend college at Drexel

University. Michael works in IT for The University of Pennsylvania Law

School and is a Stage/Sound Technician with Light and Tone for various

theaters in Philadelphia. Brittany works in banking at TD Bank in Mount

Laurel.

Brittany and Michael came to Trinity after hearing Reverend Faulkner

preach at Brittany’s great-grandfather’s funeral. They felt Trinity created a

warm and personal approach to worship. Brittany is the niece of Carol

Parsons, and a cousin to Lauren and Stacy Parsons.

Brittany and Michael are engaged to be married in October of this year.

They are looking forward to becoming involved in the church; Brittany

through arts and crafts, and Michael through sound and technology. We

are happy to welcome them to the Trinity family during this exciting time

in their lives.
