Birthday Season

As we celebrate our congregation's 60th birthday, there is another anniversary that has

occupied much of the Western branch of Christendom and that is the 500th anniversary of

the Reformation. Martin Luther, an Augustinian friar and professor of theology at the

University of Wittenberg sent a letter to his bishop along with a list of academic theses;

the letter was dated October 31, 1517; the eve of All Saints Day, also known as All

Hallows Day and, you guessed it, the reason we have a day called Halloween (Hallow's

Eve).

In many parts of the world there has been much celebrating of the 500th anniversary of

what would become known as the Reformation. There is good reason to doubt that the

young professor (He had only earned his doctorate and professorship five years earlier.)

intended a universal reform of the Roman Catholic Church. More than likely he was

interested in doing what professors did (and still do): carefully investigate a line of in-

quiry. Probably no university professor has ever caused more change with one broadsheet

than Herr Doktor Luther!

What Luther began was carried in various theological directions as the Reformation grew

in scope. Our own Presbyterian heritage has its source in people who were greatly

influenced by Luther and this writings. The great Reformed (i.e., Presbyterian) reformer,

John Calvin, was only 8 when Luther wrote his 95 Theses, but in Luther's later years he

wrote favorably of Calvin's theological works. Though the two reformers never met, they

stand today as giants in the Protestant tradition. What Luther began, in many ways, Calvin

continued and enhanced.

As we approach the Advent season, we will mark the 500th anniversary of the

Reformation by taking as themes for our worship five of the mottos of the Reformation:

the Five Solas. Sola is the Latin word for "alone" and for both Luther and Calvin and their

colleagues these five phrases summed up the Gospel faith: We are saved by faith alone in

Christ alone who saves us by grace alone (and not by our works) so we might live for

God's glory alone; this we know because of what God has given us in the sole rule of faith

and practice for the Church--the Word of God, alone.

This is another birthday worth marking because the Reformation has shaped who we are

as Presbyterians. During this month, we will mark the 500th anniversary of the

Reformation by learning more about the power of placing our faith in the great grace

given in Jesus Christ--because of that grace, you and I have every reason to keep

Session Update

At its stated meeting on October 2, 2017, the Session:

Heard memories from members about who we are and what we do as Trinity. Anticipated the upcoming 60th anniversary events, celebrating God’s goodness

to us. Learned that the Strategy Committee had approved a new vendor for the

cleaning contract. Heard about plans for Reformation Sunday programming and for adult

education content. Noted that the commissioning class retreat went well. Discussed the Peacemaker visit by Rev. Manh. Approved a baptism. Learned that pledge income continues to come in below budgeted amounts. Noted that the Nursery School again expects to finish the year with a positive

balance. Heard about the Stewardship theme (Honoring the Past; Serving the Present;

Providing for the Future) and the speaker schedule prior to Stewardship Sunday

on November 12. Learned that the Audit Committee had conducted the annual audit of the books

with satisfactory results. Received an update on the September Presbytery meeting where discussion

items included an overture about mental health awareness; the Presbytery

consultant’s work on improving digital presence and social media; and a visit

from missionaries who had served in Kirghizstan. Prayed for members and friends.

Adult Ed Forum

Someone to Watch Over Me Sunday, November 5

10:45 am in the Community Room

As Christians, we know that our spiritual selves are cradled in God's care. As humans, we know that we are

responsible for the care of our own physical selves and, often, for the care of our loved ones. What happens

when we need direction or help in navigating treatments or hospital care? Who is available to help us when

we become care givers for others? What is the NJ Care Act and how does it relate to care givers?

Join us in the Community Room on Sunday, November 5, as Terry Ruggles emcees a panel of experts on

care. Speakers include two nurse navigators from Cooper University Hospital who will discuss the role of the

nurse navigator to aid a patient on his/her medical journey, and a speaker from AARP 's Care Giving

Resource Center who will speak about resources available for caregivers and the New Jersey Care Act.

Opening information from the speakers and dialogue with emcee Ruggles will be followed by a question and

answer session with the audience.

Children and Youth Ministries

On behalf of the Children’s Ministries, I would like to thank Linda Craven, Sarah

Craven, Pat Turner, Sandy Hewitt and Michelle Yeary for all their work helping the

children with their crafts on Saturday and Sunday of the 60th Anniversary weekend.

Also, a great big thank you to Cate Marcelli and Abby Leitinger for their time face

painting our children. Girls, you did a terrific job!

It’s hard to believe Christmas is around the corner, but there is much to look forward

to! On December 3rd we’ll host an Advent Festival with crafts and food for the

children. We’ll also look to bless others through two different giving opportunities:

collecting hats, mittens, and scarves on our Tree of Warmth to be given to children in

need for the winter months. In response to the many natural disasters, we’ll also be

putting together hygiene kits for PDA (Presbyterian Disaster Assistance). We would

welcome anyone in the congregation to join in the efforts. There will be a box in

Witherspoon. The list of items we are collecting for the kits is below. We thank you in

advance for participating in our endeavors.

Hillbilly Elegy

A Memoir of a Family and

Culture in Crisis By J. D. Vance

Whatever happened to the

American Dream? J. D. Vance’s

memoir about growing up in

Appalachia is an attempt to

explain why this American ideal

of upper mobility has become a myth for a significant

portion of our population.

For most people, the term Appalachia and the

characteristics embodied in it applies to rural

Kentucky and West Virginia. Vance explains that the

geographic area of Appalachia is much larger than

that because so many people born there migrated to

Ohio, Pennsylvania and even New York in search of

an escape from poverty and a better life. For most of

them the dream did not come true. Though they were

not impoverished, they had to struggle to achieve only

a smidgeon of middle class life.

Vance himself did fulfill the dream, graduating from

Yale Law School and having a happy family and a

successful career. But his memoir chronicles how

unlikely this is:

“I wrote this book because I’ve achieved something

quite ordinary, which doesn’t happen to most kids

who grew up like me. You see, I grew up poor in the

Rust Belt, in an Ohio town that has been

hemorrhaging jobs and hope for as long as I can

remember. I want people to understand what happens

in the lives of the poor and the psychological impact

that spiritual and material poverty has on their

children. I want people to understand the American

Dream as my family and I encountered it.”

In addition to relating the author’s life story, Hillbilly

Elegy draws on an array of historical and social

analyses in an attempt to understand when, how and

why “hillbillies” have lost faith in the ideals of

upward mobility and opportunities to come. It is an

“elegy” on the American Dream.

Hillbilly Elegy was on the best seller list for more

than a year. As a reviewer, I put off reading it because

I do not usually enjoy memoirs, preferring to read

fiction. But this memoir includes interesting situations

(plot) and people (characters). Vance’s tough but

loving grandmother (Mamaw) provided steady

guidance as he grew up. His mother’s drug addiction

and failed relationships with men create chaos in his

life. Traits which Vance associates with the culture of

Appalachia (intense loyalty, especially to family,

fervent love of country, violent tendencies and verbal

abuse) describe many of the people in the book.

If you would like us to purchase a particular book

for the Trinity Library, stop by on Sunday or

contact Dottie Dunfee ([email protected]).

Finance and Stewardship

Finance and Stewardship Campaign 2017: Honoring the Past, Serving the Present and Providing

for the Future.

Trinity’s Annual Stewardship Campaign commenced on October 15. The theme of this year’s Annual

Stewardship Campaign is: Honoring the Past, Serving the Present and Providing for the Future. As we

celebrate Trinity’s 60th anniversary this year, we recognize how past generations have built a strong

foundation of faith, mission and programs at Trinity. As stewards of our Church, we have the obligation to

continue to build on this foundation. We should celebrate all that we have accomplished with the recent

enhancements to our facilities, maintaining a highly qualified and devoted staff, our ministry serving others in

the community and the many programs we offer to our members. However, to maintain this vitality and

provide the growth that is important for our future, your support is essential.

Each Sunday during the campaign, speakers will address our past accomplishments, current programs and

future initiatives focused on the Church’s and our own personal growth. Our scheduled speakers are:

Donna Croker - Campaign Kick-off

Bill Stockwell – Honoring the Past

Margaret Gammie – Serving the Present

Bill Kain- Providing for the Future

Your generous financial support is needed to maintain current staff, programs and mission and help secure

Trinity’s future. You should receive your pledge card during the week of November 5. Please place this

card in the offering plate during the worship service or mail it to the Church office. Stewardship Sunday is

November 12.

Per Capita

The Finance and Stewardship Committee would like to remind you to give your Per Capita for 2017. If you

have already done so, we thank you. West Jersey Presbytery has set the amount at $39 per member for

2017. Per Capita is the amount of money per member that our congregation pays to our larger Presbyterian

Church (U.S.A.). This money is part of the glue that holds Presbyterians together, enabling Trinity to work

with other Presbyterian Churches in our presbytery and across the country to further the mission of Jesus

Christ around the world. Per capita is determined by member, not by family. Therefore, a family of four

commissioned-members would each owe Per Capita on an annual basis, resulting in four payments. If the

Per Capita amount of $39 is not received from a member, Trinity must take monies from its operating budget,

which could then limit our other ministries. We hope that you will consider giving your Per Capita for 2017.

Honoring the Past – Stewardship 2017 Bill Stockwell

The Stewardship Campaign Committee has asked me to share my perspectives from the past.

Although I was raised in the Church – I’ve had valleys in my faith journey. But over the years I have been

touched by people here - who helped me be better and caused me to grow in my faith.

At 6’ 4” – I don’t look up to many men. However - over my years at Trinity - I have looked up to a number of

them. Most I got to know during my times with the Property & Buildings Committee. Ben Wean, Ken

Thorne, Bill Schacht (fearless on the high ladder!), Joe Weaver (I think I crawled every foot of the

underground storm sewer with him – more than once.), Alex Webb and Bill Bowman. Other Trinity men who

have impacted my life have been Jack Meldrum, Randy Kraft, Jim Reese, Norris Anders, Ben

Callaway, Gerry Gillette, Bill Carson, Norm Blessing and my Dad, Elb Stockwell. All these men were suc-

cessful outside of church from Monday through Saturday – but humble men of faith on Sunday morn-

ings. And know that my list is longer than we have time for this morning.

Some of you know that I run a small manufacturing business in Philadelphia. I put in a long and

often bruising week – just like the challenging world you and I are living in today. I come to church to wor-

ship and hear the word of God through scripture, the sermons and the music. I enjoy being among all of you –

my church family. Being part of this faith community restores me – I go back to battle on Monday morning

renewed.

There is another aspect of my business that I want to share with you. We have a handful of folks in my shop

who I consider to be ‘multipliers’. People who – if you give them some resources and trust - really get things

done in a great way. I treasure those people. And we are blessed with multipliers here in this congregation.

And allow me to name a few. Tony Ceneviva, Walt Steinle, Pam Dougherty, Ed Sanborn, Steve Morton,

Tom Tilsner, Rick Bean, Rick Fletcher, Bob Thorpe, Bill Strobel – and others - who spend the church’s

money sparingly and accomplish great things with their hands and hearts. And let me add Debby Talbott and

Lisa Marcelli– some of our great multipliers. And I see many others among you.

I am involved in a faith organization named Integrity Ministries. It’s comprised of businessmen trying to run

their businesses in a way that integrates Christian Principles with the Private Business Sector. The members

attend other churches in our region. It gives me an opportunity to hear how some neighboring congregations

are faring. And I hear of situations in local churches that cause me to feel grateful for what we have here in

Trinity.

For example, in recent years we ran a capital campaign and a complete renovation of our Sanctuary,

Fellowship Hall and bath rooms that didn’t financially compromise us. Thanks to our multipliers.

While we – as a congregation - are focused on Christ and our caring for each other – our feet are firmly and

squarely planted in the reality of good stewardship. We have smart people on our Session looking out for the

business of the church. Brad Ritchie, Kyle Allen and I just completed our church audit – we have good

controls here. So I can say to you: this church – this organization - is very worthy of our best investment.

As in Proverbs Chapter 3: Verse 9 – Our first fruits. We need this congregation to prosper – Trinity has to

be our place of faith, our place of renewal in a very uncertain, and increasingly challenging world. And

so, I am hoping each of you – according to your ability – will prayerfully consider increasing your pledge to

Trinity for this coming year.

Witherspoon Bathrooms—Scary No More!

Did you know that our children and youth called the Witherspoon Center bathrooms “the scary bathrooms?”

They were dark, dingy, crowded with extra partitions and just plain outdated—they were in dire need of a

makeover. Well, they are no longer scary—they are clean, colorful and beautiful! Our fabulous Property &

Buildings team recently renovated and updated them, along with the Adam and Eve bathrooms in the

basement of the main building.

The bathrooms in Witherspoon Center were gutted; new tile was installed on walls and floors; new heaters,

new partitions and new countertops with integrated sinks were also installed. Both rooms were made

handicapped accessible. New ceiling tiles, lights and mirrors completed the refreshed, up-to-date look. At

the start of the project, P&B discovered that the water heater was leaking so rather than simply replace it, a

tankless one was installed, saving energy and giving us additional closet space. In the main building, the

Adam & Eve bathrooms were repainted, the partitions were replaced, floors were scrubbed clean, and

brighter light fixtures and new countertops with integrated sinks were installed.

With a $20,000 budget, the committee had to be very careful about expenses. Therefore, all labor was

volunteer labor, provided by the members of the P&B Committee and a few other dedicated volunteers. Pam

Dougherty and Amy Manley consulted on design decisions but Walt Steinle, Tony Ceneviva, Tom Tilsner,

Rick Bean, Ed Sanborn, Stan Blair, Chris Bryfogle, Bill Strobel and Walter Steinle III got down and dirty for

2-1/2 months, working diligently to finish the project, and overcoming problem after problem along the way.

Please check out the renovated spaces, and the next time you see Walt and his crew, give them a nice pat on

the back for another job well done!

If you are a handyman or woman and would like to utilize your talents at Trinity, the P&B Committee would

love to have your help. Please contact Tony Cenenviva at [email protected] or Walt Steinle at

[email protected].
