Executive Summary CABI CWA continues the implementation of the refresher training activates according to action plan in the project. During the month of June 2013, module 3 for the Cotton, module 2 for the Rice and Module 1 on Onion crop has been successfully implemented in their respective districts. An additional training on Non Formal Education, Group Dynamics and Quality Assurance of the Farmers Field School has been implemented. The training was attended by participants from Department of Agriculture Extension staff, NGO workers and selected progressive farmers. During three days’ workshops, the already developed modules topics for the respective crops were covered through participatory approach with the participants mainly working in groups using power point presentations and practical in the field. Plenary feedback sessions allowed time for further discussions of points raised and sharing of ideas amongst participants. Evaluation of the workshop by participants was positive.

Introduction The Refresher Course for IPM Facilitators has been developed for the extended period of the World Bank financed project “Integrated pest management productivity enhancement component of World Bank assisted SOFWM project”. CABI CWA has been remained a premier institute in capacity building of agriculture departments and farming community through its participatory approaches. Therefore, Extension Department Sindh contacted CABI CWA to facilitate and conduct these trainings for their staff who had already been trained previously. This has been jointly prepared by Agriculture Extension Sindh and CABI CWA for capacity building of Agriculture Extension in implementation of IPM through farmer field school (FFS) approaches to achieve sustainability in crops and vegetables production. The aim of this proposed activity was to enhance and refresh the technical and social skills of these facilitators (Trainees) to analyse crop production systems, eventually identifying and adopting the practices most suitable to farming system through FFS approach. The crops included in the program for training of facilitators are cotton, chili, tomato, okra, onion, and rice. Investment in the human capital is one of the most effective means of reducing poverty and promoting sustainable development. Agriculture extension was once known as the application of scientific research and new knowledge to agriculture practices through farmer education. The field of extension now encompasses a wider range of communication and learning activities organized for rural poor by professionals from different disciplines. In many countries, traditional extension is gradually being replaced by more participatory approaches, in which the knowledge and opinion of farmers is considered to be just as important as that of researches and government officials. Participatory approaches involve information-sharing and joint decision making. CABI-CWA is applying participatory approach by establishing Farmer Field Schools (FFS) to enhance tunnel vegetable production and income of the farmers. Field Agriculture Professionals are providing extension services. The professionals have strong technical background but are not conversant with participatory approaches in extension. The CABI-CWA is investing in the capacity building of Agriculture Field Professionals. The designed training will not only help farmers and field professionals to develop understanding of participatory approaches but also acquire the skill to put these skills into practice. The combined training of educated farmers and field professionals will furnish a forum to develop understanding and build rapport between them. This rapport building will accelerate the efforts to enhance farm production and income. The training will also produce a fleet of helping hands to CABI-CWA in

Page 4: Training Progress Report - CABI.org...Onion Nursery Establishment and Transplantation Dr. Shakeel Group Dynamic Exercises Dr. Shakeel OnionVarieties Dr. Shakeel Review of the Day and

3

achieving the targets and objectives of the project. The services of this fleet will also be an advantage to train other professionals and farmers.

Action Plan The finally proposed action plan for the conduction of the refresher courses was designed keeping in view of the crops growing cycle. The detailed plan is as under

Training Materials The soft copies of all power point presentations were handed over to the respective site Coordinators. Regarding the AESA, the printed brochures were distributed to the entire workshop participants at all sites. At the time of registration of the participants the following stationary items were distributed among the participants. File folders Note book Ball points

Refreshment for the Training Participants During the workshops, morning and evening tea along with cookies and lunch box was provided to the participants.

Training Bottlenecks It was noticed that almost at T.M.Khan for onion refresher training 50% of the training participants were from NGOs with no background of IPM and TOT/FFS approach. This refresher course was designed for the IPM facilitators which have already gone through this process. So, it is recommended that selection of the participants must be reviewed. Training hall at Agriculture Extension office Matli is very old and deteriorated. As a result of discussions with training participants and site coordinator, it is recommended to hire a suitable training hall to provide good training conditions.
