FROM THE HEAD OF PRIMARY

Dear Parents/Guardians, The month of October began with the Primary Parent Workshops.

Learning through Play in the Early Years - Miss Sarah Seed & Miss Luvini

Supporting your child’s learning at home KS1 (Year 1 & Year 2) – Mr Mike

The importance of phonics in KS1– Miss Sarah Oliver

Learning through song - Miss Stacy

Learning English through art- Mr Lawrence

Using the Internet to help your child’s learning – Mr Jon

Helping your child with Maths in KS2 (Year 3-6) - Mr Joe

Home support for ESL learners in Primary – Miss Carmen

Thai in the Primary School – Kru Faa and Kru Gai

It was lovely to see so many of you attend the workshops. It was great that we were able to offer many different areas for people to choose from, but I know from your feedback that some of you wished you could have gone to more and that you would have liked a bit more time in each workshop. For next time we will see if we can do something about this. Following the Half-Term Holiday we were able to welcome Mrs Rebecca back to Year 4 from her Maternity Leave. We were also able to divide the Year 5’s into Class 5a and 5b with Mr Jon and Mr Lawrence taking each respective class. It is lovely to see how well the children have settled, and it is

wonderful that we are now able to offer the children much more individual attention.

October is also time for our traditional Halloween Celebrations and this year the costumes were absolutely spectacular! The children had so much fun and the hall was packed during our celebration assembly. The children really enjoyed all the themed activities, especially the ‘Trick or Treating’ around the school!

NEWS FROM YEARS 1 & 2

In This month’s newsletter Year 1 and 2 have joined forces to talk about a really special trip! Just after returning from the relaxing half-term break, both year groups ventured out together to pay a visit to Dream World! A really fun and exciting day was had by all. The main purpose of the trip was to explore the snow-dome situated there. It provided an excellent educational opportunity for children to learn first-hand about the changes of state of water, which can change from a liquid to a solid (and back again). It also links into learning about the celebration of Christmas - not so far away… It also allowed the children to experience sub-zero temperatures and to feel / touch snow, something that many Asian children have never experienced before. The children were amazed and found the snow-dome captivating. Pupils wore snow-boots and coats, played in the snow, threw snowballs and went on an ice-slide. Some even enjoyed throwing snowballs at the teachers!

LITTLE CLASS OF MONSTERS

Ms. Stacy Corless, Year 3 Teacher Year 3

celebrated Halloween with the Primary with terrifying

results!

We began the week by writing how to make our

own Magic Potions, based on the book ‘Mr Majeika’ by Humphrey Carpenter.

Later we created our own versions of the poem ‘My

Magic Box’, with spectacular results. All

these can be seen on our displays outside our

classroom!

Then on Friday 26th October the whole of Primary celebrated Halloween with a special assembly. Every child was dressed up in fancy and scary costumes, including the teachers! Our wonderful teaching assistant – Ms Gok!

We had great fun designing and making Halloween masks – some of them were

very scary!

Year 3 ‘trick and treated’ around the school, scaring as many teachers as they could to get candies! Look at how many they got! Finally in the afternoon we got to watch ‘Hotel Transylvania’ and eat as many of our candies as we could!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN FROM YEAR 3 OF TRAILL!!!

NEWS FROM YEAR 6

Mr. Joseph Fisher, Year 6 Teacher During Halloween, Year 6 was busy decorating their classroom ready for visitors paying a visit at the end of the week. We started the week by creating some gruesome silhouettes. We also drew portraits of monsters to scare everyone away. As well as decorating the classroom we were very busy in the kitchen making some delicious chocolate cakes. We made some beautiful chocolate eyeballs for our visitors to taste. On the Friday the children walked around the school trick or treating. In year 6 we welcomed them into our haunted house sharing our sweets and trying to scare them with our excellent costumes. It turned out to be a really fun week for all involved. Here are some pictures of the activities year 6 took part in.

NATIONAL MUSEUM TRIP

Educational trips are no doubt still one of the most effective and rewarding learning activity. The students’ enthusiasm and interest in learning the history of Thailand were ignited upon seeing the artifacts (some dating as far back as 12th century) and old photographs in the National Museum, right in front of their very eyes. It was indeed a fruitful and enriching trip for all of us. WORK EXPERIENCE

Over the summer holidays, we were given the privilege to intern for the well-known ‘Prestige Magazine’, which is owned by a company called Media Expertise International. As we entered the office on the first day, we really had no idea what to expect and were really nervous. When we met and got to know the friendly employees who worked there, we began feeling much more comfortable within a couple of days. We had the opportunity to do everything from regular intern work like scanning magazines to actually writing an article that featured in the September issue of the magazine. One of the employees generously gave her time to teach us things about graphic designing as well. During the month of our work experience, we gained invaluable experiences such as learning how the magazine functions, the importance of being punctual, as well as an exposure to a typical workplace. Even though the idea of going to work is something that most of you would probably consider in the distant future, giving some thought to some sort of work experience now though may not be such a bad idea. It looks great on your CV and can make your university application stand out! Simran and Sheena (Year 12)

SPAGHETTI COMPETITION NEWS

During the Summer I travelled to Melbourne with four students Shane, Dhruv, Taisei and James currently in year 11. They were winners of the University of Melbourne’s Engineering competition and attended a two week internship program as their prize. Lectures caused the students to question global issues like food shortages, human rights, justice systems. They also examined at the power of persuasion and its role in the modern world. There were a number of outings in addition to the lectures the students attended they visited the local courts and heard criminal cases being conducted, visited the Houses of Parliament, looked at urban issues like homelessness and the facilities and challenges faced by these people. The students undertook a huge range of activities from learning how to rock climb, beat a lie detector machine and use a washing machine to wash their own clothes. It was also the first time for some of the students to see a ground frost as it was Winter in Australia The competition time has come around again and we have two teams taken up the challenge to build a machine which can water a plant. This years teams are;

1. Michiko, Gem, Pim and Pat in year 10 2. Phu, Timmy, Sky and Callum in year 7.

Good luck to this years teams. Ms. Gail Elliott, Science Team Leader

BANKS IN ACTION AT TRAILL A programme sponsored by Bangkok Bank and JA Thailand

Learn and compete to become the Bank of Choice!

Welcome to the exciting world of money and finance! Everyone is interested in money, and bankers deal with more of it than anyone. You and your classmates now operate a bank and are responsible for managing all the money in it. You will learn how bankers make decisions and practice making banking decisions yourself. The most successful bankers are those who create a winning strategy to best serve their customers and increase profits by managing the bank’s assets and liabilities against others competing in the market.

JA Banks in Action is a volunteer-led program built around eight classroom sessions. During each session, students learn the fundamentals of the banking industry and then have the opportunity to apply what they learn in a competitive environment using the JA Banks in Action computer simulation. Through the simulation, students form banking teams and operate a bank over time by making several decisions, each of which represents three months or a calendar quarter. Competing banks are doing the same thing and the banks start out on an equal basis. The banking team that develops the best strategy and makes a greater profit than its competitors is the winner, earning the title “Bank of Choice.”

The classroom-based version of JA Banks in Action offers a program kit containing lesson materials, and administrator control of the simulation.

I am very happy to note that the programme has received overwhelming response from the students and as many as 28 students participated in it.

In our school, the programme was organized as part of School ECA on Tuesdays. For the concluding session Mr.Gordon was the chief guest and gave way certificates for participants and prizes for winners. Mr.Gordon expressed his happiness over active student participation and thanks to the organisers.

JAPAN TRIP Mrs. Takako Suzuki, Japanese Teacher

During the half term break, I and seven year 10 students went to Japan. The members were Pimpisut (Pim), Tamon (Michiko), Gemmarie (Gem),Renaka from 10A and Napat (Pat), Jirayu (Boss), Natthasith (Macnel) from 10B and myself Mrs. Suzuki (Japanese teacher). Those students learned Japanese language with me when they were in Year 8 and 9. All of them were very successful in learning Japanese language. That was the reason why I decided to bring them to Japan. The trip was for 6 days and 7 nights (2 nights in the plane). We visited Nikko (World Heritage Site), Kinugawa Onsen(Breathtaking beauty of nature with coloured leaves), Disneyland and many interesting spots in Tokyo. Though we encountered several unexpected incidents during the trip, we completed our mission and we were all very happy. The experience they had on this trip was enormous and truly valuable. The time we spent together in Japan this time was so intimate and meaningful and it would be one of the most precious memories in my life. Here are the articles written by the members;

I miss Japan Gem (10A)

The week in Japan was probably the best week I’ve had in 2012 – so far. Not only did I get to go to

one of my favourite places, I also got to spend it with my closest friends. We went to Shinjuku,

Akihabara, Asakusa, Nikko, Tokyo Disneyland, Harajuku and so many other amazing areas in

Japan. When I say we had a blast, I think I’m speaking for all eight of us.

Japanese food in Japan is the best, obviously. We ate ramen and sushi and more ramen and lots of

soft creams. I got to eat sweet grasshopper, and gyoza-flavoured chips in Nikko. We tried some very

…interesting foods as well, like the sticky natto that definitely has an interesting taste. But all in all,

food there was heavenly.

Needless to say, we walked a lot. At the end of each day, my feet were always sore but it was worth it and I’d do it again, no doubt. The country has breathtaking sceneries and the kindest, most hospitable people I’ve met. So, really, you forget your sore feet and back when you see such places, or receive a friendly smile from a stranger. It was a great experience, I had a great time and I most definitely miss Japan, and the moments I had with my friends and Suzuki sensei. Delicious food Boss (10B) I went to Japan on the 13th October 2012 for 5 days. The most delicious foods in Japan are Ramen, Sushi and Tonkatsu, etc. The hotel that we stayed at was too small. If we go to Japan again next time, get a bigger room, please! It was a great experience and I had a great time. Thank you Suzuki sensei for taking care of us. Day 3 Pat (10B) During the half term break we went to Japan and stayed there for a week. On the third day, we went

to Oku-Nikko area. We went sightseeing around the area. Around the area there were beautiful

waterfalls and lakes and villages around it was very peaceful. But as it got into the evening, it got

colder, the temperature dropped. It was because we were near the waterfall. In the evening, we went

to Kinugawa area to stay overnight. After we checked in the hotel, we went to the room. The room

looked very old and traditional which was good for experience but we were scared somehow. The

onsen was very relaxing, after the walking we had done all day. All tiredness was washed away by

the warm water of Onsen.

On the second day we checked out the hotel and went sightseeing around the heritage site of Nikko.

We went to see mostly shrines and there were a lot of people there, tourists and schools having fun.

There was a show, which we were very fortunate to come on the day they were having the show.

The show (Horseback archery) was about riding the horses and shooting an arrow at the target which

was set beside the track. We could see only a little bit of the show because this is a rare event so

there were a lot of people. After we finished seeing the site there, we got on the train to return to

Shinjuku where we stayed for another 3 days.

For 7 days Macnel (10B) For 7 days that I've been in Japan with my classmates and Suzuki sensei, everything was very good except for the weather that was kind of bad on the first day and the last few days. But the other things were all good, the food, the places that we went. For Sensei, she’s taken care of everyone very well and she's organized everything very well even though the weather was not really good. For the thing that I liked the most about this trip was probably the last day that we went to the park at Suzuki Sensei's home town. The weather and everything were very good. The last day Michiko (10A) “Today is the last day we are going to stay in Japan. I am excited to go home, but I am also sad because I love it here.” When we finally left the hotel, we went to a public building nearby. This building allowed us to go up to the 45th floor to see the view there. We could see almost everything from that floor, Tokyo Skytree, Mt.Fuji, the horizon went on forever. After that we went to Mrs.Suzuki’s hometown. When we reached Mrs.Suzuki’s hometown, we did some shopping and ate the best ramen in that district. The ramen bowl was absolutely enormous but of course, I finished the whole bowl. We walked to a park nearby which was amazing! The trees turning yellow, the clear blue sky, and the cool breeze. We sat down and had some picnic which Mrs.Suzuki had kindly bought for us. Japanese people were everywhere playing with their kids, talking, riding bicycle and many more. We stayed there for a while absorbing the surroundings. Afterwards we went to a place which had a big Ferris wheel. While we were on the Ferris wheel, the

sun was setting and the scene was indescribable!

At the airport we ate some snacks and boarded the plane. Everybody was excited to go home but

we all knew this week will be one of the precious weeks which will stay in our memory forever!

The happiest place Pim (10A) During my holidays I went to Japan with my teacher and my friends. This was my first time that I went to another country without my parents. For me, this trip was very fun and challenging. I have seen a lot of new things that I had never seen it before. This was my new experience and I have learned a lot of new things. I enjoyed Japanese food a lot! I ate Sushi , Ramen, Udon and even soft cream. It was very fun trying new things. The thing that I liked the most was Tokyo Disneyland. It was the happiest place in the world. In Disneyland, it was divided into many zones and each of them was all very unique. I enjoyed that a lot. And if I have a chance, I will come back to Japan again! Travel Journal Renaka (10A) On the first day we arrived at Tokyo in the morning and we went to Shinjuku by Narita Express and then we went to the Shinjuku Washington Hotel. After the launch, we went to Akihabara. There were famous anime and appliances. After that we went to Asakusa. Asakusa is the most famous for

Sensō-ji, a Buddhist temple. That was very beautiful.

On the second day we went to Nikko by the limited train Spacia. We saw the sights of Kegon

waterfall, Ryuzu waterfall and Lake Chūzenji of Oku Nikko. Nature around there was so wonderful. I

was very surprised with that. That night, we stayed at Kinugawa Green Palace Hotel. I enjoyed the Onsen.

On the third day we visited the sights of Nikko. We saw Nikkō Tōshō-gū. It is world heritage. In the

evening, we came back to Tokyo and went to Tokyo Sky Tree. It's the highest tower in the world now. Night view was very beautiful. Next day we went to Tokyo Disney Land and we enjoyed there very much. On the fifth day, we did shopping at Shinjuku and Harajuku. That night, we had Sushi! Last day we left the hotel and visited the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building for seeing the scenery. I saw Mt.Fuji. And then, we went to Nerima. That is Ms. Suzuki's hometown. We enjoyed

shopping and lunch. In the evening, we went to Odaiba (water front at Tokyo bay) and rode the Giant Ferris wheel. That timing was very fantastic because we could see the sunset and the moon together. After Odaiba, we went back to the hotel and took a limousine bus for the airport. We left Japan after midnight.

On Tuesday, October 2 the Year 10, 11 and 12 Art and Design students visited a temporary exhibitions at The Bangkok Art and Culture Center, entitled “Thai Trends”. This exhibition, curated by Dr. Apinan Poshyanada and five other Curators interestingly structured the huge exhibition according the following themes: Search for Thai identities; Buddhist Faith as Inspiration; Abstraction and individualism; Social Space and Patronage; Social-political Struggle; Fantasy and ‘Sur’ reality; Gender and Marginality; Locality and International Limelight; Experimentation and media. This visit by the Art and Design Department provides an experience that cannot be replicated in the Traill Art Room and gives the students a deeper understanding and knowledge of their art and the international and national art around them. Here is Year 10 IGCSE Art and Design Student, Gem’s impressions of her experience at the Thai Trends art exhibition: The exhibition was great. Everything was meticulously placed and I loved the ambience. The paintings were breathtaking-some were interestingly different and others were plain beautiful. The sixth floor was full of amazing art masterpieces created by very talented artists. The seventh floor was less overwhelming but the paintings were still breathtaking. The seventh floor has paintings of women and my favorite part of the exhibition was there-the inflatable elephant.

The elephant was brown and lying there, partly inflated, when I first saw it. My classmates were busy blowing air into the masterpieces, wanting to make it stand up. Intrigued, I sat down and helped them-only to be disappointed in the end. I took turns with my friends but the elephant stayed stubborn. Sure, once we left, the air had some air in it, but I daresay it wasn’t even half full. It was huge. It was not fun losing your breath, but it was worth it since there was a moment of teamwork with my friends right then and there. All in all, I enjoyed the trip. Not only did the place have great art, it also has great cafes and food. If you’ve seen all the breathtaking works of art, you can freely roam around and entertain yourself. Stalls and shops are there if you want souvenirs, and small restaurants can satisfy your hunger. Everything was there. It’s hard not to have fun.
