these tools have helped the civil engineering to be able to determine, analyze, evaluate & design the
structure by searching for principal objectives, first the structure has to be safe & sustainable and second it
must be economical & aesthetic.
In a bad manner it has been told that these methods have fallen in no-use, arguing that the computers have
partially removed the work of “grabbing a sheet of paper and start drawing” to conceptualize any kind of
structure, however, as mentioned before, all the software dedicated to the structural analysis & design,
homebrew or commercial, still depends on what they call “traditional”.
As it has be seen on this course of Structural Analysis I, we could find if the structure in its geometry is
changeable or unchangeable by using the kinematic method, however this causes confusions at first instance
when is taught, because the principal function of the structure is that doesn't move and the engineers or
students on their analysis, search for a non-moving structure.
Also with the kinematic method is possible to determine the “false supports”. These supports are
represented when the structure is loaded with gravity load and the obvious result is that the structure won't
move (horizontally, vertically and rotation), but in the other hand when certain geometry (rigid frames) is
meet and the base of the columns have a simple span condition, when a lateral load appears, the structure
will result unstable and it won’t be able to be sustainable.
Also it has been seen in this course that the energetic methods including Castigliano offers to determine
how the structure will behave up to any kind of applied loads (concentrated, lateral, distributed, área load,
etc,.) and also offers that the structure could have less restrictions or conditions.
However one of the cons of the traditional methods is that represents a tedious and hard work just to
determine the equations, displacements, rotations and this will represent many doubts during the
calculations (produced by deficient development of math equations).
In a few words, it is highly recommended to study the classic methods of structural analysis, and if we keep
practicing we will be able to determine easily and rapidly the global behavior of the structure and avoid
only to depend using the computer just to search for an output that will depend of how it has been introduced
in the system and the displayed results.
