‘the Commission is invited to present, by the end of 2019,a long-term vision for the EU’s industrial future, with concrete measures to implement it. It should address the challenges European industry faces, touching upon all relevant policy areas’
Upcoming policies
‘To become world’s first climate-neutral continent’
‘We will be a world leader in circular economy and clean technologies. We will work to decarbonise energy-intensive industries’
‘I will propose a New Circular Economy Action Plan focusing on sustainable resource use, especially in resource-intensive and high-impact sector’
European Green Deal

EU „Raw Materials Initiative” = EU raw materials policy
Aim to secure sustainable supplies of raw materials
Launched in 2008, consolidated in 2011
Non-energy, non-agricultural raw materials
Connecting EU external and internal policies
Integrated strategy (3 pillars)
Introduced a list of Critical Raw Materials (CRM)
Policy strongly supported by EIP on Raw Materials
Foster sustainablesupply from
Europeansources
Boostresourceefficiency
and recycling
Ensure levelplaying field in
access to resources in
third countries

HORIZON 2020 SUPPORT TO CIRCULAR ECONOMY
• Going beyond waste - Interdependence across the Value Chain
• 5 priority sectors, including Critical Raw Materials
• All forms of innovations: (technological and non-technological)
• Large scale demonstration projects
• Focus on impact
7EU Circular Economy
Action Planadopted in Dec 2015
(Mancini et al., 2018)
Raw materials contribution to SDGs
Raw Materials Information System (RMIS)
• RMIS is the EC’s knowledge platform on non-fuel, non-agriculture raw materials from primary to secondary sources, along the entire value/supply chains
• RMIS includes both abiotic and biotic materials
• RMIS act as key interface for policy support
What is RMIS?
• RMIS acts as the reference access point to the EU RawMaterials Knowledge Base (EURMKB)
• RMIS facilitates the availability, coherence, and quality of knowledge required by specific EU raw materials policies and EC services
• RMIS provides structured quantitative knowledge within Europe and beyond and contribute to developing country & material specific profiles
Goals & Scopes
2019 RMIS Roadmap
• Provides an overview of RMIS
• Highlights progresses made since the release of the 2017 Roadmap report
• Illustrates development priorities and milestones
• Gives a chance to discuss needs & priorities
RMIS Newsletter to better inform stakeholders
on new releases related to RMIS, upcoming events, ongoing work, etc.
RMIS – Other news
• Acceptance and trust from local communities and other stakeholders in relation to activities, mainly – but not exclusively – in the mining sector (exploration and extraction)
• The sustainability and responsibility in production of raw materials in the EU may meet society’s expectations and thus improve approval and consent
• Develop a life-cycle based impact assessment method for sustainable sourcing based on a common understanding
