Military and other opportunities1. Career Center is the liaison for contact with all

branches of the military.

2. If your child wants to investigate joining the military, either “enlisted” or ROTC/Academy, send them to us and we can put them in contact with the recruiters and explain the process.

3. If your child wants to enlist, they must take the ASVAB. November 13th and March 25th at SKHS.

Applying to Colleges Go to the college website – Most applications are online Look at & fill out the application completely Request your transcript from SKHS website using

Parchment Request test scores directly from SAT/ACT. Write admissions essay, if the college asks for one. Gather any supplemental materials to upload

Example: portfolios, letters of recommendation (form, request 2 weeks before needed)

If something is “recommended”, do it! Example: SAT Subject Tests

TERMS TO KNOW Loan: $$$ borrowed that needs to be repaid. A simple

concept students must understand.

Expected Family Contribution (EFC): The amount of $$$ you are expected by the federal gov’t to contribute to your child’s education. The amount determined often provokes laughs, groans or shrieks.

Total Cost of Attendance (COA): All costs of attending school that year including books, transportation, misc. fees, plus tuition + Room & Board.

FAFSA: (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) The form used to apply for financial aid.

FSA ID: Electronic signature used for filing and correcting the FAFSA.

What types of financial aid are there?

4 Types:1) Loans: money borrowed & must be repaid

○ Direct: through Fed. Govt., Stafford-currently at 5.045% (max. freshman = $5,500) Subsidized: need based Unsubsidized: not need based

○ Perkins: Campus-based○ Parent PLUS Loan (Up to full “cost of attendance” minus

student’s financial aid. Requires credit-worthy applicant.)2) Grants: money that never has to be repaid. Awarded

primarily based on need (Pell), or other factors.

How to apply…9 simple steps:1. Get a FSA ID number at https://fsaid.ed.gov

Both child and parent need a FSA ID; If more than one child is in college, the parent can use the same FSA ID for all children.

2. Gather needed documents: SS #, W-2 forms, income tax statements, driver’s license #. If you’ve filed, an option is the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. The DRT is available 1-2 weeks after filing.

3. Starting October 1, apply online at www.fafsa.govChecks for errors. Can be completed over several sessions, just like a college application.

4. FSA ID # for signature and later, corrections!

application is processed.

6. Receive & review SAR (Student Aid Report). Also can take 3 days -2 weeks to receive. If you provided an email address on your FAFSA, you’ll receive an email explaining how to access your SAR online.

7. Print out all documents and SAVE THEM.

8. US Dept. of Ed sends your info to the colleges you’ve selected.

your financial aid award and then notify you of it, either my mail or email, usually by April…later for community colleges.

You must make a decision and let the school know where you will attend by MAY 1.

Paper FAFSA’s available at college financial aid office.

You will receive NO need-based aid AT ALL without filing the FAFSA!

2. Berea College in Kentucky…tuition free, consistently ranked one of the best colleges in the south. 2/3 of alums graduate debt free. www.Berea.edu

3. BYU-Idaho: Accept non-LDS students, $16,000 total per year for non-church members.

4. Considering the military to pay for college? Investigate the National Guard. Receive 50% off tuition at WA public colleges & universities, plus will pay off $50,000 in federal student loan debt.

5. University of Alaska SE and Alaska-Fairbanks. Much cheaper than the UW or WSU even for WA residents.

College Bound Scholarship• Students have preregistered/qualified for this

scholarship in junior high. Register your 7-8th

graders for this now.• All College Bound Scholarship (CBS) participants

who are currently seniors will be contacted by their counselor. (Must have a 2.0 GPA to qualify.)

• All College Bound Scholars must file their FAFSA to receive this scholarship.

• The State will contact you by mail or email to inform you that your FAFSA has been earmarked to receive the CBS.

• It is NOT a full ride scholarship….tuition only*.
