‘Together We Learn for Life - Ako ngatahi ki te ora’

7 September 2011 11/13

Dear Families

It was great to see the number of parents at school last week

supporting the children in the cross country. A number of the place getters took part in the interschool champs yesterday.

School Grounds As the weather improves children and adults will be making more

use of our grounds at the weekends and evenings. We ask that users respect our property and do not cause damage. The cost of

vandalism repairs is paid for by the school and every dollar spent on this is less that we have to spend on our students and their

learning.

TEAM THREE (Rooms 6,10,11,12,13,14,15,16) Joan Barber

Team 3 children enjoyed the very talented storytellers who visited

our school last week. It was very interactive and the children participated with enthusiasm.

Remember it is our Cross Country next week on Tuesday 13th September so keep up the encouragement for

the final few days training. This week it was our turn to attend the Disco to raise

funds for Team 1 camp in 2012. I know the children had a great time. Room 12 have been having a very exciting time in their room

based around the story of the „Gingerbread Man‟. The children have been using this story to develop Oral Language and writing. Keep up the Home Reading as the term is flying by and soon the

teachers will be preparing to gather the information needed to prepare your child‟s end of year report.

CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL ABILITIES (CWSA) Judith McLean “Celebrating the gifts and talents of children in our school”

Envirogroup Last Tuesday at Envirogroup we had a

special visitor, Mrs Wolfe. She brought

along with her lots of different types of seeds. Those of us who chose to plant with Mrs

Wolfe got a small container and chose our seeds. There was a wide variety of seeds to choose

from. We all had fun doing it. Also the others who did not want to do the planting went with Mrs McLean to the Room 1 garden and

got straight to work digging up weeds, dead plants and everything else so we can plant a new healthy bright garden.

By Kimi Allen and Shayna Billett Extension Writing At Extension Writing we are learning all about kiwis. We are learning to describe where they live, what they eat and how they get their food. We are looking at joining sentences together and

how to start sentences with different words. We went on a trip to see real kiwis. By Madison Chapman and Charli Allen

French Je m‟appelle William. Je m‟appelle Josh. In French we have learnt

to say our names. We are also learning our numbers up to 20 in French. Here are some examples: seize is 16, dix-sept is 17, dix-

huit is 18, dix-neuf is 19 and vingt is 20. We are learning to do maths in French like 2 x 3 is deux x trois. Do you know the answer to this? Dix-huit - seize = ?? By William Maea and Joshua Taylor

"Life is like a ten-speed bike. Most of us have gears we never use." Charles Schultz

APSEL Raewyn Whiteman-Thorne

There‟s a mirror in my office that fascinates

young ones and draws groans from lots of parents as the quote under it says

“Whose behaviour does your child reflect?” Of course not everything your child learns

comes from home but there is no doubt that most of a child‟s behaviour has been learnt in the home

environment from parents, siblings etc. Last week a parent read this and immediately began to blame the

other parent. I do not deny that the comments passed may be true but the interesting thing for me was the blaming. This is certainly behaviour that is copied by young ones and one of the best things

children will ever learn is to take responsibility for their own stuff. Terms like “he did it first”, “she told me to do it”, “I only did it

once”, “but I...”, “it was just a little push” etc are typical child ways of avoiding consequences and many adults use them too, or

try and joke off the responsibility. It‟s sad to see kids believing their own avoidance stories, sadder

still to see adults doing it. Come and see the mirror if you want. More importantly, try to teach

your children to value taking responsibility for their own behaviour.

CHANCE CARDS Children behaving positively in the playground

were recognised at assembly. Congratulations to: Team 1: River Anderson-Harrison, R5; Hayden

Gibson, R3 Team 2: Briar Gash, R20; Gypsy-Rose Simeon,

R9; Nicole Steiner, R19; Kimiora Folaumoeloa, R9

HOCKEY Countdown until the end of the season! 8th September game is at 4pm versus Amisfield; 15th September game is at 4pm versus

Strathmore. Prizegiving will be on the 22nd September.

SOCCER Shelley Miller

The final round of games and prizegiving were held last Saturday. Congratulations to all our children who have done exceptionally

well. A special mention to 11th grade Barricudas who won all their games and to the Gladiators for gaining second place in

the 9th grade. On behalf of our soccer children I would like to thank our parents for their support, especially those who

stepped forward to manage and coach teams - this is a huge commitment.

Please return uniforms and match balls promptly.
