For the past 30 years The October Club has been transforming good causes. Each year we identify a UK-based charity with a project, or projects, in several UK regions which could be transformed with our help and yours. In total the Club has now raised just over £10m and in recent years the average raised per dinner has been £500k, making our event the single biggest of its kind in the sector today.

The committee is very well connected within the charity sector and as such we are able to undertake thorough due diligence on our selected charity each year.

“ It was a tremendous honour to have been selected as the October Club’s Charity for 2015. Their wonderful support has enabled us to take the biggest step in our 20 year history which is to open the doors of a second Honeypot House in mid-Wales. The committee worked extremely hard to ensure that the events were hugely successful and the amount raised exceeded all our expectations. I urge charities to get in touch with the October Club; they are a fantastic and very committed group of people who makes dreams come true!”

“ The October Club’s support has been transformational for The Cure Parkinson’s Trust, and for Parkinson’s as a whole. It has enabled us to create a portal to engage the whole Parkinson’s community in research projects with the potential to cure Parkinson’s. Through effective communication we aim to demystify research and expose the hype from the reality. The support and encouragement of the Committee at every stage has been incredible. Their interest in our work, and commitment to help change our world has been and continues to be phenomenal.”

The MS Trust is a UK charity which believes that no one should have to manage multiple sclerosis alone. They provide trusted information and support to help people with MS live the best life possible; they train and educate MS health professionals to offer the best care; and they fund MS nurses where they are needed most.

The Burden of Advanced Multiple Sclerosis

40,000 people in the UK have advanced MS. They live with complex symptoms, severe disability and need assistance with basic daily activities. Too many people with advanced MS do not get vital specialist support. 80% of everyday care for people with advanced MS is provided by family and friends.

Since the MS Trust was founded in 1993, they have played a crucial role in training, developing and supporting MS specialists to help support people living with MS. Back then there were just 3 MS nurses in the UK – now there are over 200 and the MS Trust is funding more in areas they know are in desperate need. But as demand on their service grows, research shows that it is those with advanced MS – the people who are most in need and most vulnerable and who are not eligible for the drugs which take up so much of nurse time – who are missing out on care and who are feeling abandoned.

The Transformational Programme: Advanced MS Champions

The October Club committed to raise funds that will transform the lives of thousands of people living with the worst and most challenging effects of MS. Their support will fund six pioneering Advanced MS Champions over

a 3-year period, who will reach out to people with advanced MS who have fallen off the radar of MS services; work with them to understand their challenges and needs; and co-ordinate the services they and their carers need to stay active and independent. It is estimated that these six champions will reach and support a total of 5,000 people and their families.

The investment made by The October Club will have enabled the MS Trust to support those whose needs are most pressing; people with advanced MS and their families who, with no prospect of a cure or improvement in function, would otherwise have little hope for the future and are often just focused on surviving on a day to day basis.

At the end of the three-year period, all six Advanced MS Champions will have been taken on by the NHS permanently, thus allowing the MS Trust to fund further champions, rolling out the programme across the UK. This will mean that the investment made by the October Club will leave a lasting legacy for the future.

“ I could not imagine seeing someone in my MS clinic and not being able to refer them to the MS Trust. The MS Trust produces by far the best evidence-based information for people with MS and is responsible for training several generations of MS nurses. For me a world without the MS Trust is simply inconceivable.” Professor Gavin Giovannoni, Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry.

The October Club has three clear rules:

1Voluntary Income

We fund small and growing charities with voluntary income of between £500,000 and £2m per annum.

2Spread of Impact

The funding is for a transformational project based across several UK regions.

3Time Scales

The funds for this project must be used within three years.

We then have a three stage application process:

1Online Application

73 charities applied online in 2017, each detailing the need for the charity and why its project could be transformational.

2Shortlisting

From 73 applications received, 13 were put forward for further discussion by the full committee.

3The Pitch

From the 13 shortlisted only 3 charities are invited to pitch themselves and their transformational project.

We employ a charity industry consultant to undertake rigorous due diligence on the charity we choose to support, before the partnership begins. This process includes gathering intelligence on:

The management staff structure, making sure it is robust and on an individual basis establishing they have: – A clear vision– Skills and Expertise – Motivations

The programmatic strategy is sound, asking:– What’s the problem they are

trying to solve? – How are their programmes

effective? – Are they reducing what it is?

The organisation’s finances, delving into:– Their annual reports and

fully understanding how they operate financially.

– The structure of their reporting format to ensure integrity and transparency.

– The effective use of resources.

Since its inception The October Club Dinner has been held at The Savoy, an iconic five star hotel perfectly positioned on the banks of the River Thames. Guests are greeted with a cocktail reception, feast on a stunning three course meal, entertained and offered the chance to win amazing ‘money can’t buy’ auction items.

– T H E D I N N E R –

The evening starts with a cocktail reception in the River Room overlooking the Embankment Gardens and the Thames beyond. Guests then move to the largest of The Savoy’s banqueting rooms, the Lancaster Room, where they are greeted by the Chairman and introduced to the charity of the year, why its work is important and how funds raised will be used to transform the charity.

As part of the evening’s entertainment, and prior to the event, guests will have the opportunity to sponsor their own horse that will take part in the race shown during dinner. This ties in nicely with our warm up event held in July, a race day at Ascot, which features ‘The October Club Handicap Stakes’ race.

Sponsorship costs £750 and the race card included in the centre spread of the evening programme will include horse and jockey with names chosen by the owner with their own jockey colours, owner’s name and a one line comment.

Once the bets are in, the horses are off. At the end of the race the MC announces the winnings as calculated by the backroom team during the race. The team then return to the tables to then pay out the winners. There will also be a top prize for the owner of the winning horse.

All proceeds made from bets on the race are added to the overall funds raised on the night.

– T H E A U C T I O N –

Throughout the evening guests are able to bid on a multitude of generously donated auction items via state of the art technology. The very best lots, however, are saved until after dinner where our marvellous auctioneer and committee member, Martin Pope, will host the live auction.

” The dinner is a unique occasion and a real pleasure to be part of. The serious aim of raising transformational funding is combined with the chance to meet dozens of old friends and rivals.” Stephen Adams, Head of UK Equities , Kames Capital.
