The Japan America Society of Chicago is a nonprofit association made up of individuals and corporations interested in United States-Japan
business, cultural, political and social relations. Founded in 1930 to foster mutual goodwill and friendship between the people of Japan
and the United States, the Society enjoys a total membership of over 150 American and Japanese corporations and over 600 individuals
throughout Chicagoland and the Midwest. The Society sponsors over 50 public affairs and cultural programs annually, including business
luncheons, evening lectures, cultural events and social/networking opportunities. All members receive discounts on program registration and
invitations to special member-only events. The Society also has a Young Professionals Committee that organizes various evening lectures and
social outings throughout the year for members in their twenties and thirties. In addition, the Society offers more than six levels of Japanese
and English language courses. For membership information and other inquiries, visit www.jaschicago.org or contact the Society office.
Our mission is to create and promote Japanese and
American friendships. We do this through business,
social, educational and cultural activities. We are the only organization in
Chicago that touches all of these areas in American and
Japanese relationships.

Dear friends,
This is an exciting time for the Japan America Society of Chicago. It has just finished a remarkable year filled with many achievements and opportunities for the future. Everyone in the Society is so enthusiastic about championing our Japan-Chicago friendship. I fully share your commitment.
2014 has been a year of transition. The Society’s former President, Ambassador J.D. Bindenagel, was a top-notch leader and a forward-looking innovator, who brought his worldview to Chicago. I applaud him for his accomplishments, and I wish him the very best.
Mr. Ed Grant is now back at the helm. With his considerable knowledge about Japan, he has been sprinting around Chicago and the suburbs to broaden the Society’s already strong foundation. He has been achieving a diverse membership that includes more companies, academic institutions, service organizations, and international organizations, as well as individuals. He has been expanding the Society’s reach to the entire Chicago area and beyond. Mr. Grant has also championed the Society in Japan. In late summer, he met with senior officials in the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo. He brought the Society to Kyoto as well. It is becoming even more front and center both here and in Japan.
Thanks to the Society, we have been coming together in many ways. Its excellent programs have featured Chicago area companies that are successful in Japan, senior executives from Japan sharing their insights, new opportunities for grassroots exchanges, and popular cultural events including Rakugo and sake tasting. The stage is now set for our wider and deeper cooperation.
I am most enthusiastic about everything the Society has achieved in the past year. The credit belongs to all of you, including Chairman Emeritus Adlai Stevenson, Chairman Michael Moskow, Ambassador J.D. Bindenagel, President Ed Grant, the Board of Directors, officers, and members as well as Mr. Mitsukuni Baba and the staff. With your outstanding leadership and countless hours of devotion, Japan and Chicago are the closest of partners. Each of you has my deepest appreciation.
I’m most eager to cooperate with you in every way possible. Together, we can make 2015 the best year ever for the Japan America Society of Chicago!
Sincerely,
Masaharu Yoshida Consul General of Japan

November 2014
Dear Society Members,
I am delighted to report another year of important progress by The Japan America Society of Chicago. Your Society continued its tradition of outstanding programs, while building its membership rolls and broadening its financial support, all in support of its mission of promoting friendship and understanding between Japan and the United States.
The Society’s members and directors enthusiastically participated in and actively supported over 40 programs this year, covering issues in business, public affairs, culture, and education. Wide ranging topics from Abenomics to Cancer Research to the ever popular Sake Tasting, our programs and events were well received and supported. It is through these programs that we strive to further our mission of friendship between our two great countries.
We are also pleased to report continued strong membership and a number of new company sponsors. Our corporate and individual members are essential to our success. The board of directors is strongly committed to our mission, and I am deeply appreciative of their contributions to the Society. Each new class of incoming board members adds vigor to the Society and we continue to attract excellent individuals who generously share their time and talents with the Society.
I am especially pleased to report that one of our directors, Yoko Noge Dean, received the Foreign Minister of Japan’s Commendation this year for “the promotion of mutual understanding between Japan and the U.S.A.” This is a great honor for Yoko, well deserved recognition and, of course, perfectly aligned with our mission. We are delighted to add our congratulations to Yoko.
And finally, I wish to thank Ambassador J.D. Bindenagel for his service as our president these past two years. J.D. was devoted to our Society and provided distinguished service during his tenure. He has been appointed the inaugural Henry Kissinger Professor for Governance and International Security at Bonn University, Germany. We thank J.D. and congratulate him for this richly deserved honor. And as J.D. departs, we welcome Ed Grant back as president, a role that he has held previously for five years. We appreciate Ed stepping in on short notice and look forward to working with him once again.
We remain committed to providing our members and the public at large with a wide variety of quality programs and events. With a dedicated and energized board, sound finances, loyal members, an excellent staff and the continuous support of the Consulate General of Japan at Chicago as well as others, we are pleased to embark on the Society’s New Year with great optimism.
Thank you to our members for your generous support and a particular thank you to our directors and governors for your service. The Society’s future is bright, and I look forward to working with you.
Sincerely,
Michael H. Moskow Chairman

November 2014
Dear Society Members,
I am pleased to report to you on the progress of your Society as we begin our 84th year. I thank you and all the friends of the Society for the great support we received again this past year. The purpose of the Japan America Society of Chicago is to promote friendship and understanding between Japan and the United States. Throughout the year, our business, public affairs, social, educational, and cultural programming contributes to greater Japanese-American understanding and friendship. Your support of the Society furthers that important mission.
Programming is at the core of our activities in pursuit of our mission. Once again we had a year of exciting and interesting programs, events, and classes. Dr. Yusuke Nakamura speaking about his cancer research in Japan and the U.S., Tohru Sasaki presenting on Abenomics, and Ambassador Kenji Shimanouchi leading a panel discussing US-Japan relations, are just a few examples of our many excellent programs. A complete listing of this past year’s programs is included later in this annual report.
Two other elements essential to our success are membership and development. Numerous member companies and individual members have provided direct financial support to our Society this past year, including many as event or program sponsors or annual sponsors. We thank each one of you. We also depend upon our individual and corporate members and thank you all so much. In recognition of this important support we have listed our annual program underwriters, sponsors of individual programs, corporate members and donors in this report. I invite you to please note the organizations and individuals that have supported our Society. Their support is so vital to our Society and we are deeply grateful to them.
Programming, membership and development continue to be the cornerstones of our Society. They are the three legs of the Society’s stability and will also be the engines of our growth. We congratulate and thank these three committee chairs and members for their great efforts that contribute so much to the success of the Society.
I also wish to specially recognize and thank some of the organizations that we work with continuously to develop, publicize and deliver our programming and other services to our members. The Consulate General of Japan at Chicago, the Japan External Trade Organization, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Chicago, and the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, and others, are great partners to the Society. On behalf of our members, I can assure these key partners that we will strive to be supportive and cooperative, and assist them wherever we can.
Finally, we have great directors and governors and an exceptional staff. I am particularly grateful to The Honorable Michael Moskow, our chairman, to The Honorable Masaharu Yoshida, Consul General of Japan at Chicago, our honorary chairman, and to Senator Adlai Stevenson, our chairman emeritus. Their wisdom and counsel is invaluable.

I would also like to thank Kenji Iijima and Nigel Blakeway who currently serve as executive vice presidents and Bob Karr, Nigel’s predecessor. Both Kenji and Nigel provide distinguished and highly valued service to the Society, as did Bob. And I thank all of our directors, officers, and governors for their dedicated service and outstanding efforts in advancing our mission, with a special thanks to the committee co-chairs and members who also give generously of their time and talents to the Society. Separately, I am thrilled to add my congratulations to our director Yoko Noge Dean. She has been awarded the Foreign Minister of Japan’s Commendation for her promotion of mutual understanding between Japan and the U.S.A. This is a great honor for a great director.
Our staff, Mitsukuni Baba, executive director, Erika Kono and Mariko Usui, quietly go about their work, delivering great programs and service for our members, day in and day out. I personally thank them for their devotion and skill.
I would very much like to recognize my predecessor, The Honorable J.D. Bindenagel, and thank him for his distinguished service as the Society’s President these past two years. His devoted efforts and excellent work has brought the Society to the strong position we enjoy today and given us a confident future. In addition, I add my congratulations to J.D. upon his appointment as the inaugural Henry Kissinger Professor of International Security and Governance at Bonn University. This is a great and wonderful honor and we are delighted for J.D. and his family.
While our Society continues to achieve its mission, we still face many challenges. To maintain our robust programming and continue our steady financial footing, we have much hard work ahead of us. Moderate worldwide economic growth is our backdrop. I am confident, however, with the strong support that we have, our Society has a bright future. Our goal is to continue to deliver excellent programs and great member value in a financially careful fashion. We intend to achieve that goal. In order to do so, I ask you for your continuing input, participation, and support. With that, we look forward to a highly productive year, providing great value to you, our members.
Thank you again to all that have supported us so well. I am very excited about our new year. We very much look forward to working with you and serving you going forward.
Sincerely,
Edward A. GrantPresident
