Barristers in the Sports Law group offer representation and advice in all matters which affect sports clubs, players and fans, including licensing and leasing of sports venues, employment contracts and dispute resolution specific to sports persons and management, representation of sports persons at disciplinary hearings and court proceedings, representation of sports clubs in matters against sports persons, immigration advice and assistance for sports persons hoping to work or study in England and Wales.
Some member of the group sit on specialist panels, including doping and have experience of practices and procedures relevant to athletes competing in the Commonwealth Games and Olympics. Members of the group have also represented sports persons in their personal matters unrelated to sport such as divorce and criminal charges such as drink driving and assault.
Some group members also specialise in representing sports fans and have expertise in the law and police practices specific to this area.

4 New Square’s barristers have a strong reputation for sports law – both in relation to sports disciplinary law and commercial sporting matters.
Where disputes are concerned, we draw on our passion for sport as well as our experience, expertise and advocacy skills fostered in commercial litigation and professional disciplinary matters. A number of the set’s silks and juniors are to be found regularly appearing in disciplinary tribunals and investigative inquiries, for both regulators and participants, across a diverse range of sports domestically and overseas.
For example, Chambers is one of the first ports of call for advice and representation for the IAAF, the IRB, the British Horseracing Authority, and the Amateur Boxing Association amongst other leading governing bodies. We have also been instructed by athletes, clubs and other entities in significant cases in the worlds of professional football, rugby and boxing, as well as across the Olympic and motor sports (including Formula One), including in the context of doping and alleged corruption.
In recognition of our strength in this field, in 2012 LOCOG appointed us, as a Chambers, to the London 2012 Legal Advice Service, and two of our number (Graeme McPherson QC and Daniel Saoul) were appointed to the specialist Advocates Panel, with a third (Graeme Mew) sitting as a Court of Arbitration for Sport panel member on London Games disputes. Members of Chambers were involved in virtually all of the high profile selection disputes relating to London 2012 (including the Rhythmic Gymnasts’ appeal, the Aaron Cook v British Taekwondo case and Rowley Douglas’ appeal to British Rowing) and also acted in a number of time critical anti-doping matters, including the IAAF’s successful appeal to CAS re the discus thrower ZoltanKovago (Richard Liddell and Nick Broomfield acting for the IAAF), which we continue to do (both prosecuting and defending).
Members of Chambers also assist sporting bodies in non-contentious aspects of sporting governance and commerce. They have been responsible for advising on and drafting the articles of association and other constitutional and policy documents (including selection, disciplinary and welfare policies) for numerous organisations, have written the Sports Spread Betting Association’s standard terms and conditions and assisted in the updating of the Orders and Rules of Horse Racing. We also advise on commercial agreements, where our background in commercial law is of significant assistance.
Chambers also boasts a Judicial Officer for the International Rugby Board, a Specialist Member of the Football Association Judicial Panel, a member of the BHA’s disciplinary panel and one of two (rotating) Chairmen of the Lawn Tennis Association’s disciplinary panel. We also boast a CAS arbitrator amongst our number, as well as arbitrators and mediators appointed by Sport Resolutions and the National Anti-Doping Panel.
We are one of only 4 sets at the Bar recognised by Chambers & Partners as outstanding in sports law. Our barristers are also ranked individually by Chambers & Partners and the Legal 500 in the field of Sports law.

The firm acts for individuals and insurers in actions for damages for personal injury arising from accidents or deliberate acts in the UK and abroad.
PTP Law has particular expertise in matters involving French law and acts for insurers and claimants in a whole variety of winter sports claims including ski-ing, snow-boarding and other ski related activities such as snowmobile accidents.
The firm represents the insurers of the Federation Française de Rugby, the governing body for rugby in France and has acted for an elite French side in relation to a claim pursued against it arising from alleged foul play on the part of one of their players.
The firm has also acted in cross-border disputes in respect of horse riding, claims relating to veterinary treatment of horses and other equine related claims.
Other cases have included a case pursued against the organizers of a professional cycling race by a spectator who was injured when one of the race followers lost control of his motorcycle and careered into the crowd

RPC Our multi-disciplinary sports team provides a full service to our sports clients. Our clients include national sports governing bodies, Premiership football clubs such as Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and Norwich City Football Club, sponsors, investors, broadcasters and brands such as Everlast, Dunlop, Lonsdale and Slazenger as well as Betfair and Associated Newspapers.
Our practice is primarily based out of the IP and commercial contracts department but includes corporate, competition, tax, employment, property and insurance. Our notable specialisms are in the "softer" side of sports law, with core expertise being commercial licensing, sponsorship agreements, sports rights, brand management, advertising and marketing rights, ticketing, data protection and litigation of sporting disputes. We have recently advised in relation to boxing licensing arrangements for one of the biggest names in boxing.
We also have particular expertise in football regulatory issues, advising on domestic and international football rules including FA, PL, UEFA and FIFA. We have also drafted regional constitutions for a national sporting body.
Our broader strengths include competition issues (including commercial distribution and licensing arrangements, salary caps and nationality restrictions). We also act for insurers on sports related claims such as player injuries, stadium matters and policy coverage, for example advising on a golfing dispute regarding a form of contingency coverage, indemnifying sponsors for performance bonus payments under the terms of sponsorship contracts.
