Als ich in Berlin war, hat mir mein Mitbewohner eine bestimmteWebsite gezeigtund auf dieser Website ist ein System, was inAustralien vllig unbekannt ist. Das heisst Mitfahrgelegenheit (Mfg) und

operiert berall in Deutschland (und auch im Ausland).

Wenn man sowieso eine lange Strecke im Auto fahren muss, ist es einVorteil, noch ein paar Leute mitzunehmen, um die Benzinausgabe zuteilen und etwas Gesellschaft auf der Reise zu haben. Fr mich (ohneAuto) wars ideal, direkt und billig von Berlin aus nach anderen Stdte zufahrenauf jeden Fall billiger als mit dem Zug, bestimmt wenn mann

kurzfristig die Reise plannt.

Es fllt mir ein, dass Mfg bestimmt sicherer ist als trampen (Hitch-hiking),weil jeder ein Konto und ID auf der Website hat. In Australien wre es

schn, solche (Studenten-)Alternative zu haben.Man kann aber nie wissen, was fr Leute die Fahrer und Mitfahrer sind.Ich bin beispielsweise mit meinem Freund Berlin nach Dresden gefahrenmit einem sehr komischen Typ, der noch drei Fremde zur Mitfahrt

organisiert hatte (vielleicht in diesem Fall kostet ihm die Fahrt garnichts).

Als mein Bruder letztes Jahr nach Deutschland umgezogen ist, ist es mirnicht eingefallen, ihm ber Mfg zu erzhlen. Er kennt sich jetzt aber

sowieso gut mit diesem system aus. Vor einer Weile schrieb er uns:

Starkbierfest in Muenchen (vor ein paar Wochen) war echtsuper, und jetzt habe ich ein Plan gemacht, nochmal nachMnchen fr Ulis Geburtstag zu fahren. Es gibt eine superWebsite, mitfahrgelegenheit.de, wo man Reise mit normalenLeute und ihren Autos gucken und reservieren kann. FrStarkbierfest bin ich mit einer komischer Transvestite nachMnchen gefahren, und zurck mit einem Mann in seinemMercedes gefahren. Die Geschichte der Transvestite warsehr lustig fr die Bayerische Leutedeshalb erkennen wir

jetzt diese Website auch als transvestiteExpress.de an. Ichwerde nochmal gucken fr die nchste Reise (weil es viel

gnstiger ist).

Ich suchte auch eine Fahrt Berlin nach Bayern und fand genau dieStrecke die ich brauchte. Meine Tante sagte aber, Du bist allein und

ein Mdchen. Fahr lieber mit dem Zug.

Na ja. Wenn ich allein bin hat sie schon recht. Und wer hat

letztendlich was gegen die groe, allerbeste Deutsche Bahn zu sagen?

Kirchen ~ Churches:

In addition to the Templars mentioned in Episode 1 ofDeutsche in Melbourne, there are deutschsprachige churches in

other areas of Melbourne.The Dreifaltigkeitsgemeinde (Holy Trinity church) in East Mel-bourne was established in 1853 and the current church built in1874. The church runs German-language services, as well as aKrabbelgruppe (playgroup), choir and seniors group. The com-munity is welcomed to regular Filmabende (film evenings) and

the annual Weihnachtsmarkt(Christmas market).

German-language services are also heldat St. Johns German Lutheran Churchin Springvale (the sister-congregation

to the Dreifaltigkeitsgemeinde) andthe katholische Gemeinde Sankt

Christophorus in Camberwell.

Schulen Schools:

Many schools in Melbourneoffer German languageclasses; a few take it to the

next level.

The Deutsche Schule Melbourne (DSM) aims for students togrow up bilingually and biculturally. The school has onlybeen running a few years, and currently has students up toGrade 3 level, but plans to offer the International Baccalau-reate in the future. The language of instruction at Prep is

predominantly German, and the amount of English used inclass increases as students progress. Some of the studentsat the DSM are GermanMuttersprachler, while others arrivewith no knowledge of German. DSM also runs an Oktober-fest, with authentic Bier und Wrste, German music and

homemade German cakes.

Spatzenschule at Toorak PS runs a bilingual Zweig (stream)for students who have a German-speaking background,while Bayswater South PS offers a German immersion pro-gram for all students. Outside of school hours, there is theGerman Saturday School run by a parents committee andsupported by Community Ethnic Education, the Victorian

Department of Education and the German Consulate.

At 8am my mobile phone wakes me up. I potter around in a daze for a while, and eat a small bowl of cereal with long life milk(fresh milk is a rarity in Germany). From the kitchen I see how thick the fog is outside; the cemetery across the road is all butinvisible. Behind it is a small range of mountains, which change colour with the seasons and give the third floor kitchen a lovelyview. Back in my room, I put on a shirt, long pants, jumper, jacket, gloves and cap. This is dressing light. As an Australian, wear-ing a scarf will never quite feel right. It takes a lot of getting used to remembering that going outside shirtless will probably give

you frostbite. Old habits die hard.

Not satisfied by my breakfast, Istep into the bakery Mahlzahnon the way and buy threeVollkornbrtchen, small full grainbread rolls. The bread fromthis bakery alone is reasonenough to come to Germany.

It is made of something calledDinkel and worth the ex-travagant price. I have no ideawhat Dinkel is, but everyoneraves about how healthy it isand it is amazingly satisfying to

eat.

I ride into theAltstadt. Despite thefact that 90% of the student popu-lation gets around by bike, there isonly one street in the old city thatpermits bicycle traffic, the barelyhalf-meter wide Plck. To makematters worse, the Plck is shared

with pedestrian and car traffic.Getting to class is thus a task ofartful weaving. Infuriated driversare run of the mill. Remarkably, Ihave had no accidents yet and

today, too, I get there unscathed.

My class is on Hegel's Phenomenology ofSpirit. The interest in the class evidentlyturned out to be much larger than ex-pected; the tiny classroom is packedout, and everyone who comes after meis forced to sit against the wall. Apart

from the odd whisper, the room issilent until the Professor enters. HerrSchmidt is a short, semi-balding, unas-suming man with sharp features and anastute smile. He wastes no time withintroductions, and is discussing the dia-lectical movement of the second para-graph before having fully settled into his

seat.

After class I walk to theMensa, a won-

derful establishment that serves a non-stop buffet from 10am to 10pm at cheapprices for students. Having been intro-duced to the concept, I am amazed thatstudents manage to feed themselves in

Australia without one!

After two more hours of class and acouple of hours in the Philosophy library,I ride home, get changed, and head to thepub. It is Tuesday, the night of the Eras-mus-Stammtisch, not to be missed even ifyou attend none of the other variousparties of the week. Though aStammtisch is usually a table in a pubwhere a group of friends or people whoshare a common interest meet regularly

for a drink, the Erasmus group use theword to mean a pub-packed-to-the-

brim weekly party.

On my way home I get hungry. At 2amthere is only one solution to this prob-lem: Yufka. The Yufka, a wrap with

salad, garlic sauce, onions, sheep'scheese and grilled meat from the spit, isthe corner-stone of many a Germanstudent's diet. One soggy wrap carriesenough calories to live off for about aweek. With Yufka in tummy I reachhome and sleep well in the knowledgethat I don't have class the next day until

late afternoon.

Freitagabend ist MUGC zum Audi

German Film Festival gegangen. Da

haben wir Was Du Nicht Siehst

angesehen, ein Psychothriller von

Wolfgang Fischer. Dieser Film, der mit

Ludwig Trepte in der Hauptrolle spielt,

erzhlt von einem Jung, der mit dem

Selbstmord seines Vaters und der neue

Beziehung seiner Mutter verkraften

muss. Er trifft zwei Jugendliche, mit der

er Sex, Drogen und Ermordung

versucht. Ja, wir sind auch verwirrt,

insbesondere, denn die Jugendliche (die

Geschwister sind) eine Inzestbeziehung

haben und auch vielleicht nicht real sind.

Bei solchen Filmen sollte man aber

vielleicht verirrt sein, denn man darber

denken sollte. Die Charaktere waren

nicht sehr sympatisch, und die

Landschaft war ein bisschen dster,

doch die Kinematografie war sehr

schn. Insgesamt war es e in

interessanter Film, obwohl ich es nicht

gern wiedersehen werde! Wir hoffen,

dass Sie andere Filmen auch gesehen
