C.C. Euro Centre, Local 37 – Open 1pm till 6pm Monday to Friday

FUNNYFUNNYFUNNYFUNNYFUNNY A retiree was given a set of golf clubsby his co-workers. Thinking he’d trythe game, he asked the local pro forlessons, explaining that he knewnothing whatever of the game.

The pro showed him the stance andswing, then said, “Just hit the balltoward the flag on the first green.”

The novice teed up and smacked theball straight down the fairway and ontothe green, where it stopped inchesfrom the hole.

“Now what?” the fellow asked thespeechless pro.

“Uh… you’re supposed to hit the ballinto the cup,” the pro finally said, afterhe was able to speak again.

“Oh great! Now you tell me,” said thebeginner in a disgusted tone.

☺Paddy had long heard the stories ofan amazing family tradition.

It seems that his father, grandfatherand great-grandfather had all beenable to walk on water on their 18thbirthday. On that special day, they'd

each walked across the lake to thepub on the far side for their first legaldrink. So when Paddy's 18th birthdaycame around, he and his pal Mick, took a boat out to the middle of thelake, Paddy, stepped out of the boat... and nearly drowned!

Mick just barely managed to pull himto safety.

Furious and confused, Paddy went tosee his grandmother.

"Grandma," he asked, "Tis me 18thbirthday, so why can't I walk acrossthe lake like me father, his father andhis father before him?"

Granny looked deeply into Paddy's,troubled blue eyes and said, "Becauseye father, ye grandfather and ye great-grandfather were all born inDecember, when the lake is frozen, and ye were born in August, ya fekinidiot!

☺Panicking when her toddler swalloweda tiny magnet, the mother rushed her

to the emergency room.

"She'll be fine," the doctor promisedher. "The magnet should pass

through her system in a day or two."

"How will I be sure"? she pressed.

"Well," the doctor suggested, "Youcould stick her on the refrigerator.

When she falls off, you'll know."

☺The Mexican was finally caught on theborderline of the US by an Americancop.

The Mexican begged, "Pleese, siir. Imuss stay here in America. I muss!"

But the American still wasn'tconvinced. So, the Mexican pleadedmore and more with very bad English. At last, the cop, assuming theMexican's English couldn't get anyworst, said to the Mexican, "I will letyou stay if you can use 3 words inone sentence."

The Mexican thought for a while, andreplied, "Is all right. I say. I say."

The cop said, "The words are: Green, pink and yellow."

After a few seconds of consideration, the Mexican responded, "Da phone -it rang: Green, green, green. I pink itup and sez, 'yellow?'"

CUSTOMSINSPECTION (Part 1)

The Customs inspection - thatunknown phenomenon whichmany people talk about - is oftenone of the hottest stories.

First, the question: who initiated theinspection of the cargo at all? - andthis applies whether it is a container, additional cargo, merchandise or"personal belongings".

Here is the answer: It is the customsauthority of each country. We mustremember that Gran Canaria andthe Canary Islands have a specialstatus (third country status) withinthe EU (and indeed even withinSpain) - so yes, a customsclearance must be made. And ofcourse the location of the island andits proximity to Africa is animportant factor. The Guardia Civilpicks up cargoes of weapons anddrugs every month.

Here the explanation of the customsclearance process:All the relevant data from variousdocuments (identity card, packinglist, etc.) and is entered into thecomputer system. This analysesthe information and provides asimple result - if the customsclearance is "green", it is releasedfrom the Customs for shipment(export) or delivery (import). The Customs computer system alsouses a filter program to chooseshipments at random forinspection.

The result can also be "orange" or"red". That means that the shipmentor the documents need furtherinspection and possibly a visualcheck of the goods.

In the case of a complete container, there are two types of visualcheck:This can be done by "scanner", i.e.your container must be taken by

truck from the container terminal tothe scanner and then brought backto the container terminal. Then the Customs officials analyzethe recordings of the scan of thecontainer and they have a time limitin which to decide to release thecontainer or order a visual check.

If a visual check is ordered, thecontainer is unloaded in a specialbonded warehouse. Phoenix Transis here in Gran Canaria formonitoring this process, both withthe customs agents as well as withtheir own employees on site.

In a visual check, if the CustomsOfficers actually find something likecigarettes, coffee, medication, weapons, ammunition, drugs orthings that were not stated on thepacking list, or new items (such asfurniture, curtains, Gardenfurniture, etc.) that have beendeclared as "used householdgoods", then of course it will be"uncomfortable" for the customer.

But if the Customs Officials say thateverything is all right, the containeris released asap.

However, in the case of illegal orincorrectly declared good, costsare incurred and these will berelated to the value of the goods, which means an expense for theowner of the goods, i.e. thecustomer - even if nothing isdiscovered.

These costs consist of theadditional handling of the containerin the terminal (shipping company),removal and return of container, possibly unloading in customswarehouse, demurrage fees, container and warehouse rents, new customs seal, new containerlock, etc.Usually the Customs Authorities -at least in Gran Canaria - (initially)do not charge any fees .Except for the case when

"something" is found, then possiblythere will be taxes, custom dutiesor penalties incurred that areimposed by the Customs Authoritiesthemselves. Most people take the inspectionpersonally and ask themselves -and the forwarding agent - whymy container?A popular explanation for aCustoms inspection is that"probably the forwarding agent and/ or the customs agent made anerror with the papers..." - to make itclear once and for all – there mustnot be a specific „suspicion“ at all -because, as mentioned above, it isa "neutral" computer procedure.

Unfortunately, as the ForwardingAgent is "the bearer of the badnews" – he or she is often grosslyinsulted with comments like " this isjust a surcharge on the shippingprice" etc....Of course it goes without sayingthat a reputable Forwarding Agentdoes not pocket a penny or a cent- despite the enormous additionaltime spent!

Finally in part 1 of the CustomsInspection, we can say thatalthough the percentage of visualchecks of containers has risen inthe past few years, and thereforemore private customers are beingaffected than before, proportionately, in the ratio is stillvery low.

FUNNYFUNNYFUNNYFUNNYFUNNYHetty, an elderly lady, has been drivingaround the Brent Cross shoppingcentre’s car park for some time lookingfor a place to park when at last shefinds one and stops to pull into it.Suddenly, a youngster drives his cararound her and parks his smart silverAudi in her space.

Hetty is so upset that she gets out ofher car and says to the young driver,“I was going to park there!”

As he walks away, the man just laughsand says, “That’s what you can dowhen you’re young and quick.”

Well, this really infuriates Hetty. Shegets back into her car, backs it up andthen drives it at speed straight into hisAudi. The youngster runs back to hisdamaged car and asks, “What did youdo that for?”

Hetty smiles and replies, “That’s whatyou can do when you’re old and rich.”

☺A nervous taxpayer was unhappilyconversing with the IRS Tax auditorwho had come to review his records.

At one point the auditor exclaimed,“Mr. Carr, we feel it is a great privilegeto be allowed to live and work in theUSA. As a citizen you have anobligation to pay taxes, and we expectyou to eagerly pay them with a smile.”

“Thank goodness,” returned Mr. Carr, with a giant grin on his face from earto ear. “I thought you were going towant me to pay with cash.”

☺I got some new aftershave today thatsmells like breadcrumbs. The birdslove it!
