AS THE SPIRIT MOVES ME…..

Recently, I was watching the 10 p.m. weather on WREX in Rockford, when Eric Sorenson said the year with the highest number of broken records for high summer temperatures (for Rockford) was 1934. 2012 is #2, so far.

1934 was also the year that was most similar to this year in the extent of the nation that is suffering from drought. (To see current drought conditions go to http://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/) An 80-year cycle of severe drought and high temperatures? Possibly.

As I said in a sermon a few weeks ago, “In seasons of drought in nature and creation, nature is forced to find its right balance and alignment with itself - and with the Creator’s intent. So, also, in a season of desolation and spiritual drought, God is working in our lives to try to force us to make inward shifts and movements, so that we move back into a state of consolation - a state of being in harmony, balance, and oneness with God. It is as though seasons of spiritual drought and desolation are, sometimes, a necessity, in order to get us right with God.”

These moments or seasons of spiritual drought are when we feel God is absent in our lives, or the moments or seasons in which we doubt God’s acceptance and forgiveness, or God’s love for us. One effect of such a season can be to force us to go deeper into our “selves” and our souls, so we find the place of true nourishment and sustenance of life; just as times of dryness and drought force plants and trees to drive their roots deeper, in order to find the nourishment and sustenance of life in the deeper soils below.

Sadly, seasons of spiritual drought will, sometimes, harden our hearts and souls to finding that life-giving relationship with God, another, or a community of faith, again. Our hearts and spirits become as hardened to God, others, and the church as dirt hardened by a drought.

Sometimes, the grand gestures we make and the extravagant gifts of love we give are like the heavy downpour. They do not soak deep into the heart of the other, especially if there is a “drought” in our relationship. Christ’s death and resurrection did not break through the hardened hearts of those who hated Him.

I think a soft, gentle rain of love over time breaks through our hardened exterior better than an extravagant gesture (a once and done kind of event), as only a gentle rain softens and soaks into a drought-stricken earth, as the heavy downpour simply runs off the hardened surface.

There’s an open, loving, good and healthy spirit among us at St. John Church in this season of our life. I celebrate and rejoice in that, for we are experiencing and know the soft, gentle, ever-present love of God through God’s love for us in Jesus Christ and in the present of God’s Spirit.

If you’re one who has been experiencing this with us, may you keep sharing that love and joy with others. If you’re one who has been experiencing some spiritual drought with God or the church, I hope you will come experience that soft, gentle rain of God’s Love and Spirit among us, over time, and give drink to your spiritual thirst.

God bless you!

In Christ,

CONGREGATIONAL MEETING AUGUST 5th

There will be a congregational meeting August 5th following the worship service. This meeting is to vote on a one year trial basis for changing the worship time to 10am. There will be an informational meeting Sunday July 29th following service for discussion. The BOLD team will expand on the reasons for the change and offer suggestions for a more detailed schedule of the Sunday morning activities.

KEVIN’S KORNER…

This summer has been quite a busy one. The new Children’s Chapel has been in a constant state of change. Many projects are in process. We have paint going up on many walls and some changes taking place in both the Narthex and the old Sunday School rooms. Things are changing and I love it. The ideas are flowing and people are being creative.

If you find yourself wondering what you can help with, please let me know. I have

several projects that I will need assistance with. We also have several rooms in the church that need a deep cleaning. Carpets need shampooing and windows need washing. There are many jobs that need to get done and the more hands we have the better. If you are willing and able please let us know.

I’m also looking for Kids Worship assistants. Each week ,starting Sept 9

th, we will be having a special worship service for the kids

(ages 3 through teen). This service will happen at the same time the main worship service is in progress. We will all meet together in the main sanctuary and the kids will be sent off to Kids Worship in the Children’s Chapel following the Children’s Moment. Each week I would like one assistant to join Kirsten and I during the Kids Worship service. It will be very different than the main service. It will be designed with the kids in mind. No big words or lengthy call and responses. These elements are truly lost on the kids. Our format will be full of VBS music and Fun. We will make a joyful noise. We will have some time of brief instruction and activity.

This is where we need the help. We plan to schedule a 10-15 minute activity/lesson each week. Something that the kids can take home. It might be a coloring page or a craft. Some weeks we might even find ourselves in the Computer lab creating digital works of art. You can be creative or feel free to follow our planned program ideas, It’s up to you. We would love to see you

F.Y.I FROM CAROL AHRENS

The following is taken from Sacia's article in the Journal standard...62 changes were implemented to the medicaid program last week, the most important for seniors was the elimination of Illinois Cares RX, a program providing low cost prescription drugs to qualified senior citizens (and people on disability)...There are numerous programs available to fill this void. Low income subsidy assistance is available to those receiving Medicare. Important phone numbers for you are the Health Benefit Hotline at 1-800-226-0768; Medicare counseling is available too at 1-800-584-9034. (Also, the Stephenson County Seniors' Resource Center at 1-815-235-9777.)

LAYCARE MINISTRY

Psalm 138:1-3 “Thank you! Everything in me says “Thank you!” Angels listen as I sing my thanks. I kneel in worship facing your holy temple and say it again: “Thank you!” Thank you for your love, thank you for your faithfulness; Most holy is your name, most holy is your Word. The moment I called out, you stepped in; you made my life large with strength.” (The Message)

Do you ever wonder why you do the things you do? You always have to have a person in your life who sees something in you that you don’t. I find myself involved in things and I think ’maybe this is where God wants me to be’. I believe that God does make my life large with strength.

First, let’s visit our ‘garden’ again for a couple minutes. When it is harvest time, don’t expect a LOT of produce this year. We’ve tried our best - just can’t get the produce to produce! The peppers and tomatoes ripen and then that black spot shows up on the bottom! I know I can garden - it just is not a good year for gardening! Pastor’s Sermon on July 19

th was about the drought -

even a drought can bring some good! I’m gonna buy some peaches just to see if they are sweeter than other years. Pastor said that’s what happens in a drought. The rain and moisture waters down the flavors, so during a drought, the peaches have a chance to become sweeter. Go buy some - see for yourself!

Secondly, I’m gonna visit you as a representative of the BOLD Team. Please don’t get tired of hearing about Paul Nixon. He has given us some wonderful ideas to strengthen and grow our church and its membership. We just need to work hard, work together and be patient. Good will come out of this too!

I know it’s hard to accept some changes. But we aren’t asking for huge changes. We went public with the O and A. Now we’ve done that and we will continue to encourage all people to come worship with us.

Now, we’re trying to see if Coffee Hour in the Narthex can work.

I believe it can. It’s kinda like a Cocktail Party. Everyone who wants to mingle can and those who like to sit at a table with their friends can do that in the recently redecorated, air-conditioned Chapel Hearth Room. Watch and see the new decorating ideas that will brighten up the Narthex and that will be a more welcoming place for us and our visitors. Don’t worry - if you are visiting with friends and having coffee before worship, there is a plan to get you into the Sanctuary in plenty of time to prepare yourself for your time with God.

Let me close with some words by Fred Bauer, a Guideposts writer:

Lord, renew us even as we grow old, Give us a zest for life and make us bold!”

LGBT NATIONAL COALITION GATHERING

By Jason Carson Wilson

Participating in the National Gathering on June 26 and 27 left me with new insights and understanding of the United Church of Christ. UCC members come in all shapes, sizes and orientations. Both National Gatherings—Youth and Coalition for LGBT Concerns—reminded us.

The Coalition for LGBT Concerns contingent witnessed how UCC not only welcomes LGBT people, but people of color. One UCC pastor fights for LGBT people of color. UCC’s commitment to be open and affirming led Judy Hanlon of Hadwen Park Congregational Church in Worcester, Mass. to co-found the

LGBT Asylum Support Task Force.

At home, discussion of LGBT issues can inspire admonishment—too much talk is a bad thing. However, abroad, those issues can lead to more dire consequences. Jamaican native Linford Cunningham described harrowing experiences he endured—all because Cunningham is gay.

Jamaica, according to Cunningham, is among the most homophobic places on Earth. He spoke candidly during a workshop, “International LGBT Asylum: Local Churches Saving LGBT Lives.”

He came as a gay refugee. Cunningham is now preaching. As that transformation occurred, some church members began dismissing stereotypes about both GLBT people and people of color. Cunningham is the task force’s other co-founder.

So, it drove home the reality that being “open and affirming” isn’t

just about welcoming GLBT brothers and sisters with open arms.

It’s about providing a safe place, when none can be found.

STEWARDSHIP

Applying Bible Principles

Dr. M.R. DeHaan, physician and founder of the Radio Bible Class, had a small sign on his desk. The sign had only two words: “Perhaps Today.”

Those who knew Dr. DeHaan and worked closely with him recall that hardly a day passed that he did not consider those words. Each day as he entered his office, that little sign, “Perhaps Today,” provided a fresh reminder to him that the Lord Jesus Christ could come that very day.

That sense of heightened expectation certainly characterized believers in New Testament times. They were looking for Jesus to return at any moment, something that might be described as the “imminent return of Christ.” Like Abraham, they viewed themselves as strangers and pilgrims, those who " . . . looked forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God” (Heb. 11:10). As a result, their interest in things of this world took second place to spiritual priorities. They saw money and material possessions primarily as instruments by which they could advance the kingdom of God and through which they could fulfill the Great Commission (Matt. 28:19-20).

Sad to say, most Christians today do not share their expectation concerning Christ’s return. Certainly most Christians would not have a sign on their desk as did Dr. DeHaan: “Perhaps Today.” Let’s face it — most present-day Christians are not anticipating or looking for Christ’s return.

And this has affected how people view money and material possessions. Instead of seeing them as the means to fulfilling the Great Commission and as tools to further the kingdom of God, they see them as goods to be hoarded or spent on passing pleasures. Instead of “laying up treasures in heaven” through giving here on earth as the Lord Jesus instructed, most people lay up treasures only in mutual funds, CDs or money market accounts.

John Piper wrote these thought-provoking words:

God is not glorified when we keep for ourselves (no matter how thankfully) what we ought to be using to alleviate the misery of unevangelized, uneducated, unmedicated and unfed millions. The evidence that many professing Christians have been deceived by this doctrine is how little they give and how much they own. God has prospered them.

And by an almost irresistible law of consumer culture (baptized by a doctrine of health, wealth and prosperity), they have bought bigger (and more) houses, newer (and more) cars, fancier (and more) clothes, better (and more) meat, and all manner of trinkets and gadgets and containers and devices and equipment to make life more fun. They will object: Does not the Old Testament promise that God will prosper His people? Indeed! God increases our yield so that by giving, we can prove our yield is not our god. . . .God prospers a business so that . . . unreached peoples can be reached with the Gospel.

Dr. DeHaan was right, you know. Jesus is coming again, “Perhaps Today.” In light of His return, will you live and give here at St. John United Church of Christ so that others may hear the good news of salvation, so that others may experience the life-changing grace of the Gospel?

PASTOR ON VACATION

Pastor Dutcher will be on vacation August 27th-September 3. He will be in the office Tuesday Sept. 4th. Please contact the Rev. Carol Ahrens at (815) 616-8901 as she will provide pastoral services in his absence.

NEW MEMBERS

The six week class for New Members begin August 19th following service. If you would like to attend these classes as in introduction to membership here at St. John please contact the office by phone or email or speak to Pastor Dutcher.

HELP US CLOSE THE GAP

We are facing the potential of a significant budget deficit, which is not a result of recent projects. Not doing those projects would not have helped the budget, since endowment or memorial funds paid for them. Also, with the death of 9 single members since Sept. and unexpected expenses, we could be forced to spend our reserves - unless we have an increase in giving. Please consider a gift beyond your normal giving. Thank you.

July Council Minutes

Members Present: Bill Condie, President, Mary Arnold, Ulan Price, Ben Lee, Joyce Robinson, Marilyn Ruthe, Keith Hinrichs, Shan MacAdam, Pastor Donnley, ex-officio

Opening Prayer: Pastor Donnley

June Minutes: Previously confirmed via email

Treasurer’s Report: Discussed and approved. There was much discussion about the differences between the offerings of this year to date compared to last year. It was decided that a wait and see attitude should be taken before a trend may be determined.

Worship Service Time Change: Due to problems that came to light after the previous vote on the change in time for the worship service, there was discussion about another congregational vote.

After the last congregation meeting several ballots were found on various pews throughout the sanctuary indicating both a “yes” and a “no” vote. It is unknown which motion these votes were in reference to.

Since there was only one close issue during the meeting, and the belief that all votes should count, it was decided that the issue on the topic of the time change should be revisited. Hugh Knapp presented a Recommendation for a Change in Worship Time from the B.O.L.D. Team, which suggested another vote was appropriate. (attached).

It was decided that an informational meeting will be held on July 29 to inform the congregation about the prior voting conflicts, to be followed by congregational meeting on August 5 for another vote about the possible time change.

Hugh will contact the congregation through a letter in reference to the above discussion.

A motion to bring the vote before the congregation was brought by Marilyn and 2

nd by Mary. The motion carried following

discussion

Replacement/Repair of doors in the Classroom Area: It was previously discussed through the Property Management Committee that the entry doors on the north end of the church building must be replaced. This is due to the lack of “crash bars” on the doors, which allow emergency exit from the building by simply pushing an exit bar. The change from the current fixture to the crash bars has been moved to the forefront after a recent inspection from the Freeport Fire Department Building Inspector.

Shan advised that staff from Monroe Glass have been contacted, and the replacement doors for the north end of the church building have been ordered. Ray Kneller, owner of Monroe Glass, will be meeting with Shan, Keith and Pastor Donnley to see if the hardware on the exit doors to the west parking lot can be repaired without being totally replaced.

Upgrade changes in the Narthex: Pastor Donnley advised that he and the other staff had put together a list of changes to the Narthex to begin the much-discussed upgrade to the various areas of the church. Council accompanied him to the Narthex, where the potential changes were explained.

1- It is proposed that three small round tables will be set up in the Chapel Hearth on Sunday mornings prior to the service. They will hold any cookies and snacks for those wishing to partake. One coffee and juice station will be set up just outside of the Chapel Hearth doorway, and another coffee station will be set up at the pillar between the restroom doors.

2- The coat rack on the west wall of the Narthex will be removed. One section of the coat rack will be mounted on the south wall, directly next to the door to the men’s room, with the bulletin board currently mounted on that wall removed. This section will be designated for visitors and those whose mobility is

Page 21: Tidings August 2012

21

limited by age or health.

The remainder of the coat rack will be mounted to the wall directly across the hallway from the office doorway. That wall will be painted prior to the coat rack being placed there.

3- The small bulletin board on the south wall of the Narthex, next to the AED, which is currently used to display Boy Scout information, will be moved to Fellowship Hall. An electronic bulletin board, probably a 32”, or similar size television, will be wall mounted on that space, with a smaller push pin style bulletin board mounted below for sign-up sheets for various projects and events.

4- Two pews not currently being used will be placed along the west wall of the Narthex, between the women’s restroom and the office window. This will allow those wishing to sit and drink coffee while conversing both before and after the service.

Health Insurance Issue: Council decided that it is necessary to move rapidly to ensure that Kirsten Eckert is covered by insurance. A “stop gap” method was proposed that we contract through Blue Cross/Blue Shield to cover Kirsten for the immediate future. There will be further clarification and discussion in reference to employee contribution and a higher deductible amount, in an attempt at keeping costs to the church as low as possible, and to maintain current trends in employee/employer relations. Keith made a motion, with a 2

nd by Ulan.

The motion carried following discussion

Adjournment: Adjourned with the Mizpah Benediction.

Next Meeting: August 13, 2012

Respectfully submitted,

Shan MacAdam
