• On May 23, 1701, at London's Execution Dock, British privateer William Kidd, popularly known as Captain Kidd, is hanged for five charges of piracy and one charge of murdering a crewman. A colorful Kidd legend included reports of lost buried treasure that fortune seekers have pursued for centuries.

• On May 24, 1883, after 14 years and 27 deaths while being constructed, the Brooklyn Bridge in New York is opened, the largest suspension bridge ever built to that date.

• On May 27, 1894, Dashiell Hammett, author of "The Maltese Falcon," is born in Maryland. He worked as a Pinkerton detective for eight years and turned his experiences into fiction. The novel was filmed three times: once in 1931; again in 1936 under the title "Satan Met a Lady," starring Bette Davis; and finally in 1941, starring Humphrey Bogart.

• On May 26, 1927, the final and 15 millionth Model T Ford rolls out of the factory, on the official last day of production. Introduced in October 1908, the Model T -- also known as the "Tin Lizzie" -- got about 13 to 21 miles per gallon of gasoline and could travel up to 45 mph.

At 29,035 feet above sea level, the low-oxygen summit of Everest reaches two-thirds of the way through the air of earth's atmosphere -- at about the cruising altitude of jet airliners.

• On May 25, 1977, George Lucas' blockbuster movie "Star Wars" opens in American theaters. With its groundbreaking special effects, "Star Wars" was soon a bona-fide pop culture phenomenon, spawning five more feature films, five TV series and an entire industry's worth of comic books, toys and video games.

• On May 28, 1983, Irene Cara's song "Flashdance (What a Feeling)", from the "Flashdance" movie soundtrack, goes to the top of the U.S. pop charts. The song helped propel the relatively low-budget film to the No. 3 spot on the total box-office revenue list for the year.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Will you write about di-verticulosis? I was twice hospitalized for it and had to stay there 12 days in all. When I left, they didn’t give me any diet or medicines. I saw my primary doctor later, who didn’t think I had diverticulosis because they didn’t do much for me. Some tell me that you don’t have to stay on a diet or take medicine. Is that so? -- N.F.

ANSWER: A diverticulum is a tiny pouch formed by the colon lining that has been pushed through the muscular colon wall. Its size varies from 0.2 to 0.4 inches (5 to 10 mm) in diameter, about the size of a small pea. Diverticulosis indicates that the colon has sprouted many diverticula. It’s most often silent. Close to one-third of adults at 60 years of age have it. By age 80, two-thirds have it.

Diverticulosis is found in countries where grains are refined. Refined grains have lost their outer coat, the bran. Bran was, at one time, the principal source of fiber. Fiber keeps stool soft and easily pushed through the digestive tract. With too little fiber, the colon has to exert great force to move undigested food along. That force is responsible for pushing the colon lining through the colon wall to form a diverticulum on its outer surface.

When you were hospitalized, you had diverticulitis -- inflammation of diver-ticulum. The neck of diverticula became clogged with bacteria and pieces of hard stool. The diverticula swelled. For mild symptoms, people can be treated at home by going on a liquid diet and taking an-tibiotics. For more severe involvement,

people are hospitalized and fed intravenously and given intravenous antibiotics.

Now that your diverticulitis has calmed down, the only diet you need follow is one with plenty of fiber -- 30 to 35 grams a day. Fruits, vegetables and whole grains are fiber sources. Many cereals are filled with fiber: Fiber One, All-Bran, Shredded Wheat and cooked oatmeal are examples. You do not have to take any medicines.

The booklet on diverticulosis covers this topic in de-tail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 502W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I will turn 65 shortly. My

health is just fine. I am out and active. I do odd jobs like construction and hauling. Some friends want me to see a doc-tor just for a physical because I haven’t been to one in 35 years. Why should I? All is OK with me. Is it true that 80 percent of men don’t go to doctors? -- C.F.

A N S W E R : You’re getting on in years. Bad things happen with aging. You don’t want to be surprised by a heart attack, a stroke or a cancer that has grown so big that it can’t be treated, do

Diverticulosis Common With Age

you? Those are some of the reasons you should see a doctor. I like your fighting spirit.

I don’t believe that 80 percent of men never see a doctor.

ters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

• "Fill a quart-size zip-lock bag with water and double-bag it, making sure there is no air in the bag. Place it inside the toilet tank, on the opposite side from the pump. Secure it there, if you can. This will displace some of the water when you flush, and you will use less water as a consequence." -- E.S. in Florida

• If you have a stained porcelain sink, try using it to soak your stained garments. The presoak can do double duty on the stained sink and washables alike.

• To make your own breadcrumbs without a chopper or blender, place dry bread pieces in a plastic bag. Use a rolling pin to "roll" them into crumbs.

• Save water in the shower by using your kitchen timer, set for no more than 5 minutes. If you can find a digital one, you will know better how much time you have left. After a little while, you almost don't need the timer.

• "If you seal your jelly jars with wax, here's a good tip: Place a small piece of string into the wax before it hardens. Then, you'll be able to pull on the string to remove the wax when you're ready to enjoy your homemade goodies!" -- U.L. in Maine

• Laundry stain removers can be good to remove stains from concrete drives. For instance, my relatives' car was leaking, and I was able to get the stains from my pavers by using a spray-and-wash stain remover I borrowed from the laundry room. It worked very well. -- S.E. in Arkansas

Carl Edwards has never won at Dar-lington Raceway. Then again, he's never

arrived at the South Carolina track with the Sprint Cup point lead.Darlington is NASCAR's oldest superspeedway... and strangest. It is

egg-shaped in that one side (turns 3 and 4) is markedly narrower than the other. The track itself, in terms of usable asphalt, is narrower than any other. As such, it is perhaps stock-car racing's sternest test.

"The first time I went to Darlington was in the Truck Series, and I had studied tape with Jeff Burton," Edwards recalled. "Bobby Hud-son was my spotter. He grew up right around there, and he'd seen races there forever, and I mean, for a month leading up to that race, I heard more Darlington stories ... about how tough that track was, and learned about the history of it through my studying of how to run fast there. To me, it's a mythical place.

"To win there, to me, would mean a lot. It would be huge. I've been very close. We've been fast in the trucks, fast in the Nationwide car, really fast in the Cup car, and have never won a race there. That's a very important race to me."

A year ago, Edwards finished 15th in the Showtime Southern 500, won by Denny Hamlin. Overall, his record is solid: four top-10 finish-es in seven races, including a second place in 2008 to Kyle Busch.

So far, Edwards, from Columbia, Mo., has finished sixth or better in seven of the nine Sprint Cup races. He has a win and two poles.

Edwards Would Love to Tame Darlington

He's also won twice in the Nationwide Series.Edwards leads Jimmie Johnson, winner of the past five champion-

ships, by only nine points."Right now ... it's all about winning races, learning and performing

well enough to lock yourself into the Chase," said Edwards. "For us to be leading is fun. It feels good, but it's also about having a little bit of insurance. ... Jimmie (Johnson) and those guys have been do-ing really well.

"Hopefully we can keep them behind us. That would be nice."• • •

Leave it to the scammers to find a way around the law. In this case, they’ve discovered a way to separate desperate homeowners from their money in a new wrinkle on mortgage scams.

Homeowners across the country have been receiving letters in the mail about mortgage “mass joinder” lawsuits. These letters promise to bring mortgage companies to their knees in courts of law and to get mortgages modified, bringing relief to the homeowners who are on the verge of foreclosure. These letters are personalized with the name of the homeowner and the mortgage company, as well as the amount of the loan. They claim to be able to stop foreclosures, get payments reduced and even get compensation.

Naturally, huge upfront fees are demanded -- $5,000 in most cases.Last fall, the Federal Trade Commission tried to address consumer mortgage scams with

the Mortgage Assistance Relief Services Rule. The new ruling says that 1) companies can-not demand fees until the homeowner has in hand a document from the lender that outlines an acceptable written offer; 2) the company must tell the homeowner what happens if they stop paying the mortgage; 3) consumers must be told that they don’t have to accept any offers (and don’t have to pay the fees if they reject any offer the company has negotiated); 4) the fee has to be disclosed, and 5) the company must disclose that it’s not part of the government.

Attorneys are exempt from the rule if they practice law, have a license in the state where the consumer lives or the property is, and comply with their state laws. Additionally, they have to put fees paid to them in a special client account.

The scammers’ workaround of the new ruling? They’re not actually offering mortgage modifica-tion help. They’re only offering to sue, using at-torneys, and they’re doing it on an hourly basis.

If you’re finding it hard to pay your mortgage, contact your lender first. They don’t want your house back. Most of them want only to help you find a way to pay the debt and will try to work something out.

If you receive one of those mass joinder let-ters, let your local Better Business Bureau and the FTC know so they’re aware that the companies are working in your area.

Q: I have a pre-World War II Union stove that is in ex-cellent shape. Unfortunately, I do not have room for it and would like to sell it. My stove is unique because it is black, white and turquoise in color, which I think must have been a special order. Can you help me determine how much it is worth? -- Jan, Bosque Farms, N.M.

A: The value of an antique stove is generally based on two criteria: condition and rarity. White stoves are not as desirable, for example, as ones that were manufactured in colors and with such features as water reservoirs, nickel-plated trim and embossed ornamentation. The utility and decorative merit of stoves also can determine whether one is ordinary or extremely collectible. Your stove might just be in the desirable category.

Clifford Boram is extremely knowledgeable about vintage stoves and is the author of “How to Get Parts Cast for Your Antique Stove.” He offers a free consultation by telephone, and this might be a good first step to take. His contact infor-mation is c/o The Antique Information Clearing House, 421 North Main St., Monticello, MN 47960; and 574-583-6465. Other helpful sources include Richard Richardson, Good Time Stove Company, P.O. Box 306, Goshen, MA 01032; and Erickson Antique Stoves, P.O. Box 2275, At the Depot, Littleton, MA 01460.

When contacting a person or a business mentioned in this column, it is always a good idea to enclosed a SASE and be patient. Many of the recommended sources receive a great deal of mail and an answer often can take several months.

• • •Q: I bought a picture at a garage sale by Joseph Wallace

King and would like to know more about the artist. -- Car-mela, Elburn, Ill.

A: Joseph Wallace King was born in 1911, served in the North Carolina legislature and occasionally painted portraits and pictures with a religious bent. He also was known as a prankster and eccentric. For example, he once hired a woman to ride a horse while wearing a flesh-colored body suit to re-create the famous ride of Lady Godiva, an event he staged to protest property taxes in Winston-Salem. His portraits in-cluded ones of Richard Nixon, Queen Elizabeth and members of the Royal Saudi family.

Q: I was reading that “21 Jump Street” is going to be remade into a feature film. Is that true? If so, will any of the series’ original stars be making a cameo? I am sure Richard Grieco has some time. -- Pat R., via e-mail

A: Actually, you might be surprised to learn that Officer Tom Hanson himself, Johnny Depp, plans to make a cameo in the movie adaptation of the TV series that helped launch his stellar Hollywood career. The remake -- which will star Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Ice Cube and Rob Riggle -- is due to hit theaters in March 2012. Also, I am sure Richard Grieco will jump on the cameo bandwagon if he’s asked -- unless he’s waiting for the big-screen version of “Booker.”

• • •Q: I was so excited to watch one of my all-time

favorite actors, Ed Asner, co-starring in CMT’s “Working Class.” Now that the show won’t be back for a second season, what are Ed’s plans? -- Martha F., Altoona, Pa.

A: The great Ed Asner has just signed on to “Royal Pains” in a multiepisode guest-starring stint. Ed will appear in two episodes as the grandfather of Hank and Evan, played by Mark Feuerstein and Paulo Con-stanzo, respectively. The 81-year-old iconic sitcom actor will appear in the show’s upcoming third season, which premieres on Wednesday, June 29, on USA.

• • •Q: My sister was telling me about a new reality

show about “Glee” where they search for the next cast member. Can you tell me more about that and where I can see it when it airs? -- Rhonda M., via e-mail

A: Beginning Sunday, June 12, Oxygen will air “The Glee Project.” From Ryan Murphy, the creator and Emmy award-winning executive producer of “Glee,” and executive producer of “Glee” Dante Di Loreto, this 10-episode competition series will find and train a group of 12 singers who will compete against one another to win a seven-episode guest-star-ring role on “Glee.” Also, a group of “Glee” series regulars will appear as guest mentors in each episode. Fan favorite Darren Criss will make a guest appear-ance in the series premiere as the first of these men-tors. Darren joined the cast last season as Blaine and quickly became a breakout sensation.

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My 10-year-old son Randy really wants a dog as a pet. He's been very responsible with smaller pets, caring for two goldfish and a small turtle. However, I suffer from asthma and have allergic symptoms around furry animals like dogs and cats. I don't know that it's possible to keep a dog. Do you have any advice? -- Dorothy K., via email

DEAR DOROTHY: Allergies to pet dander (the fine undercoat most dogs and cats have beneath their fur) can range from annoying to life-threatening, so you're right to be concerned about owning a dog.

If you're interested in the possibility of being able to keep a dog, study up on different breeds first. There are a few breeds of dog that have much less of an un-dercoat and generate less dander, including many types of terriers and the Irish Water Spaniel.

Next, find out if keeping a dog is possible by borrow-ing a friend's dog for a few days -- whether keeping the dog at your house or having your friend bring the dog

Boy Wants a Dog, But Mom's AllergicBy Sam Mazzotta

over for several "play dates" that last a few hours. If you decide that, yes, Randy can have a dog, make

some changes around the house to reduce the amount of allergens (dander, dust, pollen, etc.) that collect. Having smooth wood or tile floors that can be quickly dust-mopped daily helps. Choosing leather or vinyl-up-holstered furniture rather than cloth will deter allergens from collecting on them. Randy will need to brush his pet daily to further reduce dander, and he should do that outside.

Should your pet trial not work out -- your allergies just become too severe in too short a time -- work out an option for Randy to continue caring for or playing with a neighbor or friend's dog on a regular basis, over at their house.
