DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Do you have infor-mation on gout? I am 65, and my son-in-law is 32. We both have it. It is so painful. My doc-tor was pretty vague. He asked me to go on the computer to find which foods I should or should not eat. I found that you can’t eat meat and fish, but salmon and chicken are all right. Some vegetables can’t be eaten. How about to-matoes and tomato products? Does one attack mean gout is forever? What is the medicine of choice? -- C.B.

ANSWER: Gout comes about when the blood uric-acid level rises. Uric acid seeps into joints to form needle-shaped crystals that cause joint swelling and unspeakable pain. Uric acid, in turn, is a byproduct of cell chemistry. Its blood level rises because a person makes too much or passes too little into the urine.

A first gout attack most often occurs in the joint at the base of the big toe. The skin over the joint turns red, and the joint swells and becomes exceed-ingly painful. One of the best ways of

diagnosing gout is to draw fluid from the affected joint and examine it with a microscope to see the needle-shaped uric-acid crystals. Gout can affect other joints: the knee, wrist, ankle and fingers. One attack of gout doesn’t call for lifelong treat-ment.

Indocin (indomethacin) is the drug most often used for an acute gout attack. Colchicine and cortisone also work well.

Medicines for gout prevention are taken if a person has frequent attacks (two or three a year), has formed uric-acid kidney stones, has kidney damage secondary to gout or passes large amounts of uric acid into the urine. Zyloprim (allopurinol) reduces uric acid production. Pro-benecid increases its elimination into the urine. Uloric, a new gout drug, is for those not respond-ing to these two.

Diet was the sole means for gout treatment in the old days. Now, with effective medicines, it takes a back seat. You ought to eliminate organ meats -- liver, kidney, sweetbreads and brain. Decrease but don’t eliminate red meat and shell-fish. Beer should be avoided. Wine can be taken in small amounts. Soft drinks containing high-fructose corn syrup (and most do) shouldn’t be drunk. You can eat all vegetables and any vegetable you want. That’s the gout diet. Not complicated.

The booklet on gout explains this common disorder in detail. To order a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 302, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. En-close a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please al-low four weeks for delivery.

Diet Takes Backseat as Gout Treatment

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Is distilled water bad for drinking? Can you chew too much gum? My husband chews about four pieces every day. -- P.M.

ANSWER: Distilling water involves boil-ing water and condensing the water vapor by cooling it. Components dissolved in the water are left behind. You can drink distilled water. You will miss out on the minerals contained in most water and on fluoride added to city water, but you can get these elements in other ways. If you chew too much sugar-containing gum, you promote cavities. Too much sugarless gum can cause diarrhea. Four sticks are not too much.

• • •Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he

will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Q: Some years ago, I purchased a set of eight plates in Oklahoma from the “Bits of the Old West” series, all de-signed, engraved and copyrighted by Vernon Kilns, U.S.A. Any information about them would be appreciated. -- Pat, Rio Rancho, N.M.

A: Vernon Kilns was a pottery firm that operated in Ver-non, Calif., from 1916 to about 1980. The company issued dozens of plate series, including “Our America,” “Bits of the Southwest,” “Bits of New England,” “Native American,” and, of course, the set which you have. One of the most popular sets with collectors is “Early California,” which was issued in bright glazed ware in orange, turquoise, green, brown, blue and yellow. Another rare collector set was designed by Walt Disney in 1940. Values vary. A complete set of “Bits of the Southwest” in near-perfect condition recently sold for $65 at a shop in Phoenix.

Q: I have a picture by the famous illustrator, Charles Dana Gibson, creator of “The Gibson Girl.” It is a signed print, 19 of 350, and I would like to find out if it is saleable. -- Kathy, Surprise, Ariz.

A: Charles Dana Gibson was, indeed, one of this country’s most famous illustrators. Born in 1867 in Roxbury, Mass., he sold his first sketch in 1886 to Life magazine, a publication edited by John Ames Mitchell. Gibson’s work was so distinctive, it imme-diately connected with the American public. To find a possible market for your drawing, I suggest you contact The Illustrated Gallery, a company that specializes in period artwork from the golden age of illustration, 1900 to 1960. The contact information is 400 Commerce Drive, Suite B, Fort Washington, PA 19034; www.illustratedgallery.com; and [email protected].

• • •Q: I have a double barrel musket from the 19th century. Can

you give me a value for it? -- Larry, Kissimmee, Fla.A: I recommend you contact an expert in early firearms. I’m

not one. Robert A. Dewar is a member of the International Society of Appraisers and specializes in antique and modern firearms. Contact him c/o Robert A. Dewar and Associates, 512 Canal St., New Smyma Beach, FL 32168.

All-Electronic Payments Coming

If you receive a monthly check for Social Secu-rity, Social Security Disability Insurance, veterans benefits or any other kind of federal government benefit, you’ll soon need to change the way you handle your money. The paper check is going away. By March 1, 2013, you’ll need to decide on an electronic method of receiving your money.

Your choices will be:• Electronic direct deposit -- the money will

magically appear in your bank account.• Direct deposit debit card -- the money will

magically appear in your card account. Signing up for the card is free. You can get ATM cash, make purchases, call for your balance and pay bills, although there might be fees for certain ATM machines.

According to a news release, moving to an all-electronic system will save $1 billion over the next 10 years. It currently costs $120 million per year to send out paper checks.

The government says that 80 percent of us are already signed up to receive our money electroni-

cally. And of those who do, 96 percent are happy with it.

If you haven’t yet applied for Social Security, you’ll have no choice. As of May 1, 2011, anyone who signs up has to choose electronic payments. If you’re about to sign up and want direct deposit, you’ll need your bank’s routing transit number, type of account and account number. If you don’t have a bank account, you can receive a direct deposit MasterCard.

To make the switch, call the U.S. Treasury Elec-tronic Payment Solution Center at 800-333-1795, or inquire at your bank.

If you’re already signed up electronically, you don’t need to change anything.

• "Store kitchen matches wrapped in tin foil to keep them dry while on camping or fishing trips. You also can store them in an empty pill bottle if they're the short kind. Fill paper egg-carton cups with dryer lint and drizzle them with wax; cut the cups apart, and you'll have small firestarters for your campfires. My family does a lot of camping in the summer, and we use these every time." -- K.R. in Missouri

• "Most people know that baby-food jars make wonder-ful organizer containers. But you also can make a great first cup from a baby-food jar. Screw on the lid tightly and poke holes along one side. Baby can tip and sip, but not much will come out. They are just the right size for small hands." -- M.W. in Alabama

• Baby oil can loosen soap scum from shower doors. Apply and buff lightly with a soft washcloth. Follow with a shampoo cleaning, or just leave as is. It will repel water, and smells nice, too.

• To keep shirt collars from absorbing oil and grime, sprinkle with talcum powder while ironing.

• Keep your steering wheel in touchable condition on very hot days with a paper grocery bag. Cut out a strip down one side of the bag to allow it to slip over the steer-ing column. The bag can be refolded and stored next to your seat. When you get out of the car, just slip the bag over the steering wheel. No more burning hands when you get back in the car.

DARLINGTON, S.C. -- Twice Regan Smith has crossed a Sprint Cup finish line first. At Darlington Raceway, it finally counted.

There's no need to dredge up 2008, when Smith was penalized at the end of a race at Talladega credited to Tony Stewart. Besides, Smith said he'd rather win the Southern 500 anyway.

What's the use of living in the past? What's the use of letting old wounds fester?

"This isn't a knock on Talladega at all, but I would trade [it all] for one win in the Southern 500," said Smith in the wee hours of Sunday morn-ing. "This is so special. We were looking at the names and faces on the trophy.

"You think about it. My face is going to be right there next to these guys and it's going to be there forever. You can't change that. It certainly means a lot to me."

Some races go to the guy in the fastest car. Others go to the guy who plays his cards right. Darlington isn't a rabbit. No one pulls it out of a hat. Strategy -- staying out while others pitted -- put Smith in position,

This Time It Counts for

Regan Smith

but when the field went to the post for the final time, Smith's betting line was about the same as a horse named Animal Kingdom earlier in the day.

Carl Edwards couldn't catch him. Enough said.

Smith drives a relatively plain black Chevy head-quartered in Denver, Colo., in the only sport where the most important Denver (at least until Saturday night) was in North Carolina. It's No. 78, for gosh sakes. That's like an outfielder wearing, uh, No. 78.

The odds are still long, but things are looking up. Smith's still starring in "Mission: Impossible." For his next task, which he chooses to accept, he has to prove that a "1" in the 10th race is more significant than the 24.4 average of the first nine.

"Any win is special," said Smith. "This one is even more special. To get the first one here ... it's certainly a big deal.

"We survived and we won."That's the way it works at Darlington.

Q: When will one of my favorite shows, “Drop Dead Diva,” be back for its next season? -- Gen-nifer T., via email

A: Well, you don’t have long to wait! “Drop Dead Diva” returns to Lifetime Television for its third season on Sunday, June 19. For those who haven’t seen the show, “DDD” is a one-hour co-medic drama that tells the story of a shallow wan-nabe model who dies in a sudden accident, only to find her soul resurfacing in the body of a brilliant, plus-size and recently deceased attorney, Jane. This season’s guest stars include Paula Abdul, Kathy Griffin, Wanda Sykes, Clay Aiken, Lance Bass, Amanda Bearse, Tony Goldwyn, Howard Hesse-man, Sharon Lawrence, Jennifer Tilly, Quinton Aaron and more.

• • •Q: I was watching a new sitcom on ABC called

“Happy Endings,” and the actor who plays Dave looks very familiar. What else might I have seen him in? -- Jerry G., via email

A: Well, I remember Zachary Knighton best as Bryce from the shouldn’t-have-been-canceled show “FlashForward.” I also rewatched “The Prince and Me” recently, and realized that he plays one of Julia Stiles’ brothers in that movie. He’s also had guest roles on “House, M.D.” and “Bones,” as well as “Law and Order” and “Law and Order: SVU.” Stop me when something sounds familiar ....

• It was French writer, artist and filmmaker Jean Cocteau who made the following sage observation: "The greatest masterpiece in literature is only a dictionary out of order."

• If you were in or near Springfield, Mo., at the end of April, I hope you took the opportunity to

attend a popular local festival: the Typewriter Toss. Every year on April 22 -- Administrative Professionals Day (also known as Secretaries Day), appropriately -- a local radio station sponsors the event, in which contestants are raised in a lift truck to a height of 50 feet, then compete to see who can land a typewriter closest to the bull's-eye painted on the ground below.

• Those who study such things say that sharks burp. Evidently it's a mechanism for regulating the depth at which they swim.

• In the early 20th century, a wealthy Russian living in Odessa died but had no children to inherit his estate. Instead, he left his 4-million ruble fortune to his four nieces. This may not seem unusual, but he did include an odd provision in his will: Each of the girls had to serve for one year as a farm girl, a washerwoman or a chambermaid before she saw any of the money. They did as the will instructed, and during that year of service each received hundreds of proposals of marriage.

Puzzle Answers

A recent article in a British newspaper suggest-ed that pet owners stop being called "owners" and start being called "parents." Why? Because pets are considered so much a part of the family that they shouldn't be considered property, the article suggested.

The trend toward treating a pet like ... well, practically another child ... isn't new, but it cer-tainly is growing. According to Hartz Mountain Corp.'s recently released Hartz Trend Report, 47 percent of pet owners surveyed said their pet is like a child to them. Another 42 percent said their pet is comparable to a good friend.

There seem to be some real benefits to animals

Are Pets People, Too?By Sam Mazzotta

as this trend grows. Most prospective owners sur-veyed consider "personality" to be more important than a pet's pedigree. And a growing number have or are considering adopting their pet from a rescue society -- 60 percent said so in the survey.

These results don't necessarily mean that your local mall soon will be filled with "mommies" pushing their beloved Lab or Terrier around in a stroller (most self-respecting medium- to large-sized dogs wouldn't take that treatment anyway). The people surveyed considered traits like loyalty and obedience to be important qualities.

So, what do you think? Is your dog or cat a part of the family, or something even more important

-- almost another child? Tell me your experi-ence or opinion on the matter by emailing me at [email protected]. Or, check out the informal poll on my website at www.pawscorner.com.

If you hope to buy a home soon, there are steps you can take in advance to make sure you’re in the best possible position when the time comes.

Your first step should be to seek pre-approval -- a written letter from a lender. (If you apply to multiple lenders within a few weeks, it won’t count against you on your credit report to have so many inquiries.) Having a lender letter will give you a leg up in knowing just what price range to shop and can make you look better in any negotia-tions with a seller.

If you discover credit problems or mistakes, fix those first to help qualify for a lower interest rate.

Getting Ready to Buy a Home

Over the years, those extra interest dollars can add up to tens of thousands.

By seeking lender pre-approval, you’ll also be able to learn which lenders will give you what you’ll want most: a fixed-rate loan. A stable rate over the years will give the security of knowing what your payment will be each month.

Don’t make the mistake of buying at the top of your price range. Just because a lender approves you for a certain amount of money doesn’t mean to have to spend that much. Consider future possibilities (loss of a job, an additional child in the family) and aim to spend less than 90 percent of what you’re ap-proved for.

Engage the services of a licensed real-estate agent, if only to gain ac-cess to the Multiple Listing Service. Ask for referrals before you work with an agent to make sure you don’t fall prey to any scams. Start by look-ing at home types on Realtor.com to narrow down your target area and wish list.

Learn how to really “see” a prop-erty as you shop. A sturdy home with only cosmetic flaws can increase in value through the years if you’re will-ing to do a little work. A property that needs a lot of serious repair can end up as a money pit and jeopardize both your savings and your ability to make your monthly payments.

Stay clear of neighborhoods with

lots of For Sale signs. Those indicate an area in transition, and you won’t know if it’s moving up or down.

10 REASONSWhy Isagenix® is Your Anti-Aging Solution1. SLOW AGING FROM THE INSIDE OUTIsagenix Nutritional Cleansing and Replenishing™ products help eliminate harmful toxins and impurities from the body that can accelerate the aging process. These products also replenish the body with crucial nutrients for optimal health. The Rejuvity and other anti-aging products also address the need for optimal cellular nutrition that ultimately creates a new level of wellness, vitality, and youthful appearance from the inside out.

2. ADDRESS AGING ON ALL FRONTS-NOT JUST SKINThe skin is largely an indication of how the body is aging. If the body has been abused, neglected and malnourished, then the skin will reflect this. However, if the body’s cells, tissues and organs are protected from harmful pollutants and replenished with crucial nutrients, the skin will reflect this level of health by appearing vibrant, glowing and youthful.

3. NO HARSH CHEMICALS OR IRRITANTSThe anti-aging products in the Rejuvity and IsaDermix® lines do not use any harsh, irritating chemicals or compounds, including phthalates or parabens. Other common products that include harsh compounds often require downtime and may damage the skin further.

4. PROMOTE SKIN’S NATURAL PROCESSESAgeless Renewal Serum and other anti-aging skin products help minimize the appearance of deep wrinkles, support collagen production, improve elasticity and tone, and increase firmness by helping the skin remember what it has forgotten as we age.

5. In addition, many of the company’s own products - including Ageless Renewal Serum - have been specifically investigated in scientific trials with extremely positive results. A recent trial on Ageless Renewal Serum showed a 92% increase in the overall improvement of the skin, and the CoQ10 used in Ageless Actives has been shown to be 800% more absorbable than standard powder forms used in other products.

7. SUPERIOR QUALITYIsagenix prides itself in using only the highest quality ingredients. With Rejuvity and other anti-aging product lines, this commitment to quality continues.8.
