• It was famed Elizabethan playwright WilliamShakespeare who made the following sageobservation: “Beauty is all very well at first sight;but whoever looks at it when it has been inthe house three days?”

• The “Guinness Book of World Records” usedto have a category for how many live goldfisha person could eat at once, but it waseliminated. Interestingly, the reason for theelimination had nothing to do with cruelty toanimals, but rather had to do with the difficultyof preventing cheating. It seems that somewould-be competitors were breeding smallerand smaller fish for consumption.

• The word “alimony” is derived from the Latinword “alimonia,” which means “nourishment.”

• Those who study such things say that themonth in which you are most likely to be shot, strangled or poisoned is December. They don’tseem to venture an opinion regarding why, however.

• Who among us isn’t familiar with the line,“Quoth the Raven, nevermore”? As virtuallyanyone who made it through middle-schoolEnglish class can tell you, it’s from Edgar AllanPoe’s classic poem “The Raven.” Consideringthe ubiquitous nature of the work, though, youmight be surprised to learn that Poe earned agrand total of $9 from the first publication ofthe poem.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m writing regard-ing the column about the children who didn’t takecare of their pet fish. It seems to me that the con-sequence of failing to take care of the Betta fishwas that the fish died. Teaching the kids to be re-sponsible is a wonderful thing; the parent was notbeing responsible.

I didn’t see the original letter, but apparentlythe fish wasn’t being fed. The mother should’veput it in her routine to accompany the kids dailyto their pet-care chores and verify they were be-ing accomplished. If the kids didn’t want to dothose chores, she could’ve given the fish away. And if she was unable to fit overseeing the pet

care into her schedule, she should have never got-ten the fish in the first place.

I’m not accusing the mother of intentional ani-mal cruelty, but definitely of being irresponsible. How can she teach responsibility when she wasn’tresponsible herself? In the long run, if neglect isthe cause of the fish’s death, she, not the children,is responsible.

On the positive side, she is correct to not allowthe kids to have another pet. Good for her on thatcount. — Beth

BETH: That’s a sensible answer, Beth, andthanks. I got quite a few letters on this issue, many

fairly hysterical. While I don’t con-done the death of a pet due to neglect,I’m also quite sure the mother feltbadly about what happened. If shedidn’t, she wouldn’t have asked mefor advice on getting another pet.

That leaves one remaining questionfor my readers: How can her childrenprove to her that they are ready foranother pet?

ANSWER: An aneurysm is aweak spot on an artery wall.It looks like a blister.Aneurysms can develop onany artery, but they aremostly found on the aortaand on brain arteries. Shouldthe aneurysm break, bleeding can becatastrophic.

Ruptured brain aneurysms account for 10 percent ofstrokes, and frequently they occur in younger people, ones not thought to be at risk of a stroke. The story ismuch like your brother’s. A person, apparently in goodhealth, complains of having the worst headache ever. Then he might lapse into unconsciousness briefly. Hemight have a seizure. The mortality of a ruptured brainaneurysm is high, more than 50 percent.

First-degree relatives of a person who had a brainaneurysm have an increased risk of also having one, butthe risk is relatively small, about 1 percent to 4.7 percent.A first-degree relative is a parent, brother, sister or child. The best way to detect a brain aneurysm is a specialkind of scan called magnetic resonance angiography. It’s a magnetic resonance imaging — MRI — scan withdye injected into the arteries to outline any aneurysm. Most authorities don’t recommend screening first-degreerelatives, because their risk is small and the procedurecarries an equally small danger.

The booklet on stroke explains this common andsometimes crippling condition. Readers can obtain acopy by writing: Dr. Donohue — No. 902W, Box 536475,Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order(no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’sprinted name and address. Please allow four weeks fordelivery.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I recently read that nausea and

gas are symptoms of pancreatic cancer. I have both.Could I have pancreatic cancer? I am 79. — E.B.

ANSWER: Pancreatic cancer’s average age of onsetis 65. The risk of coming down with it increases with age.About 34,000 new cases of it occur yearly in the UnitedStates. It is the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths.

What makes pancreatic cancer such a peril is its lackof signs and symptoms in its early stages. Symptoms, when they do arise, include loss of appetite, a drop inweight, stomach discomfort or pain, nausea and asensation of fullness after taking only a few bites of food.As the cancer grows, it blocks the drainage of bile, andthe skin and whites of the eyes turn yellow.

Your symptoms are common to many things, andpancreatic cancer is not high on the list. However, I havelearned one thing about medicine: When a person brings

up a diagnosis, I can’t dismiss it, no matter how remotethe chances of having it are. See your doctor. You andI will sleep better if you do.

***Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual

letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever

possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of

available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL

Watch Company sometime during the 1870s or’80s. It has a silver case and is key wound. Anyidea of how much it is worth? Also, can you pro-vide any information about this company? — Karl,Ashland, Ohio

A: The Rockford Watch Company crafted asmall number of high-grade timepieces from about1874 until 1915. The highest grade were engraved“Ruby Jewels” or “Ruby.” Some of the later had astylized “R” associated with the jewel count. I con-sulted several dealers, and they seem to agree thatyour watch is probably worth in the $200 to $450range, depending on condition.

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. — It wasn’t NASCAR,but it looked like NASCAR back when majorraces were run at North Carolina Motor Speed-way.

Now it’s called Rockingham Speedway, and onNew Year’s Day the famed mile track hosted thePolar Bear 150, a Street Stock race.

What the Street Stocks lost in speed to theirmodern counterparts, they more than made up forin close competition. Why? Because the track wascrowded with 67 starters that lined up three abreastat the start.

The Indianapolis 500 is most noted for three-car rows, but that’s the way the Southern 500 atDarlington began back in the early years.

Among the entries was a Dodge Charger thatlooked very much like — practically identical to— the No. 71 K&K Insurance cars of Harry Hydeand Nord Krauskopf. Among those who drove thecar “back in the day” were Bobby Isaac (who wonthe Grand National title in 1970, back before itwas known as Winston Cup), Dave Marcis andBuddy Baker. Bobby East drove the No. 71 onNew Year’s at Rockingham.

Some of the names were recognizable — SprintCup crew chief Jimmy Elledge was in the race asa driver — but most were obscure.

There were classic stock car names — JasonLeatherwood, Roscoe Thompson, Waylon Flynn,Wally Leatherwood, Duke Bare — but there were

also names that could’ve been 1950smovie stars — Tab Boyd — and evenone with star power in ragtime music:Scott Joplin drove the No. 53 and started55th.

Based on their names, some driverscould’ve been making their FormulaOne debuts (Stoyan Zutich) or had theirlikeness on a pinup calendar (RaginaJune).

This was a race for purists, men andwomen willing to brave the elements atan almost forgotten race track whenthey could’ve watched wall-to-wallfootball in the comfort of their ownhomes.

About 5,000 fans showed up to watchChuck Barnes of Louisville, Ky., winthe Polar Bear 150.

A show of hands, please: How many of us feelsignificantly younger than our real age?

Many seniors feel, on average, about 13 years

How Old Do You Feel?

younger than we really are. So says a large studythat was done over the course of six years with par-ticipants aged 70 and older.

The mirror told a different story, though. It’s notsurprising that women felt closer to their real agewhen it comes to appearance. We can blame Madi-son Avenue for that one, I’m sure. In certain circlesthere’s a negative stereotype about older women, and unfortunately some of us buy into it. Men don’tseem to have the same self-image problems, accord-ing to the study. And given the same age betweenmen and women, women perceived themselves tobe on average four years older than the men.

By the end of the study, however, it was the menwhose satisfaction with themselves decreased morethan the women’s did.

Perceptions in general changed as the study wenton. By the end of the study, many reported a de-crease of a few years in the difference between realand perceived age.

There was a link between feeling young andhealthy and living a long life, of course. Those who

had a positive attitudeabout aging in generalhad the greatest discrep-ancy between real andperceived age. Thosewho started the studywith health issues per-ceived their age to becloser to what it actuallywas.

I’m not sure I like theattitude of one of the re-searchers, though. Shewas quoted as sayingthat the 13 years is an“illusion.” Of course itis. But so are the imagesthat are put before us byMadison Avenue. Aslong as we’re happy and

healthy, does it matter what “number” we assignourselves?
