Last year the schools had measures in place that included masking, social distancing, and careful quarantining of exposed individuals. This prevented the rapid spread of COVID-19 among students and staff that they are seeing this year without those measures. There is protection available in the COVID-19 vaccines, yet vaccination rates are low among older students and the younger students are not able to be vaccinated yet. Several people from SWNPHD’s counties have been hospitalized for COVID-19 because they are severely ill. Most of them are healthy individuals that were not immunocompromised or sick with any other conditions before they were hospitalized. “The Delta variant is affecting a wide range of people of all ages. There is a trend of younger people getting seri- ously ill and needing oxygen support and ventilators that we didn’t see with the original COVID strain,” states Melissa Propp, Public Health Nurse for SWNPHD. All currently hospitalized patients from SWNPHD are unvaccinated. SWNPHD had 70 new cases of COVID- 19 reported from August 24th to August 30th, 2021, bringing the weekly average to 59 cases per week in the last 30 days. The total number of cases is 4,225. Vaccination rates across the health district have reached 46%. This number includes fully vaccinated as well as partially vaccinated individuals. OXFORD MAN ENTERS PLEAS IN HIS CASE A 50-year-old Oxford man has entered pleas in his case involving a child sex trafficking investigation in Furnas County. Carl Kramer, Sr. was originally charged with three counts of Sex Trafficking of a Mi- nor. In late August, two of the charges were amended to Felony Child Abuse and the third charge was dismissed. Kramer pled guilty to the Felony Child Abuse charges and sentencing in Furnas County District Court was set for October 27, 2021 at 10:00am. The inci- dents giving rise to the Child Abuse occurred between October 1, 2019 and January 17, 2020 when the child was 16-years-old. The maximum penalty for each count is 3 years imprisonment or $10,000 fine. GOV. RICKETTS PRESS BRIEFING Governor Pete Ricketts held an afternoon press briefing yesterday to discuss the State’s collaborative work with hospitals to set up a state- wide patient transfer plan. Similar coordination helped protect hospi- tal capacity during the peak of the pandemic in November 2020. Given the staffing shortages hospitals are facing, the Ne- braska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is working closely with them to re-institute the transfer plan to ensure robust hos- pital capacity statewide. DHHS Incident Commander Angie Ling joined the Governor to overview the State’s transfer center. To help manage hospital bed capacity, the transfer center will be fully opera- tional as of Saturday, September 4 th . Nurses manning the center will be available 24/7 to help Nebraska hospitals locate available beds for patients needing to transfer to a higher level of care. The 115th football season in Nebraska-Kearney history kicks off Thurs-

day night (Sept. 2) when the Lopers host the Missouri Southern State

Lions at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field. UNK leads the all-time

series, 11-7, and has taken three straight over the Lions. This will be the

third time in four years the two have met on opening night, the Lopers

winning 45-0 in 2018 and 39-27 in 2019. Fifth-year head coach Josh Lynn

and his staff once again will get to see a fresh face across the field as

MSSU hired Abita Bradley as the program's 14th all-time head coach back

in February. In his four season-openers, Lynn has faced first-year head

coaches in 2017 (Missouri Western's Matt Williamson), 2019 (MSSU's Jeff

Sims) and 2020 (Pittsburg State's Brian Wright) with MSSU having new

offensive and defensive coordinators in 2018. The Lopers are coming off

a 7-5 2019 season in which it posted the program's fourth all-time post-

season win, a 50-33 decision over Winona (Minn.) State in the Mineral

Water Bowl. UNK then went 2-0 in a COVID-shortened 2020 season, win-

ning at Pitt State for the first time in 37 years and downing in-state rival

Chadron State at home. McCook's Hunter Hayes will start for the Lopers

at left guard while Zach Schlager will start at inside linebacker.

Fans will get their first opportunity to see the 2021-22 Nebraska men's

and women's basketball teams on Friday, Oct. 1, with the return of Open-

ing Night with Husker Hoops at Pinnacle Bank Arena. The event, which is

free to the public, will feature introductions of both teams, remarks from

Head Coaches Fred Hoiberg and Amy Williams, a scrimmage by the

Husker men and more. The event will begin at 7:30 p.m. with PBA doors

opening at 6:30 p.m. "We are excited to welcome our fans back to Pinna-

cle Bank Arena this season, and Opening Night gives them a chance to

see us scrimmage and to see the personalities of our players," Hoiberg

said. "For our players, it is their first opportunity to play in front of our

great fans and that should make for a fun evening."
