The colt, con- signed for Kilcarn Stud, was bought by Demi O’Byrne after a protracted duel with Shadwell Estates and The Thoroughbred Corporation and was the second highest price ever paid for a yearling at Goffs since the 3.1 million guineas paid for Authaal in 1984. He was a superb looker and O’Byrne arrived late on the scene after Shadwell and the Thoroughbred Corporation bat- tled it out until they reached the Ir£2 million barrier. But the Coolmore advisor had the final say. “Second Empire was a good horse,” O’Byrne commented. “The cham- pion two-year-old in 1997. This is his brother by the champion stallion and he was the horse of the sale.” O’Byrne also bought the second highest lot of the day, a Ir£550,000 full brother to Rock of Gibralter (Ire), who took the G1 Grand Criterium impressively on Sunday. Selling as lot 248, the bay son of Danehill--Offshore Boom (Ire) was offered by Ashtown House Stud. Peter Doyle went to Ir£520,000 for yet another son of Danehill. Lot 350 was offered from Abbeville and Meadow Court Studs and had plenty of admirers, but Doyle fended off all comers to secure the colt from the family of Evening Performance and Tirol. “I have bought him for an overseas client who wishes to remain anony- mous. He is a very nice horse,” Doyle explained. Shadwell Estates signed the ticket for lot 305, a bay colt by Unfuwain who was purchased for Ir£65,000 as a foal last year by Clodagh McStay of Oaklawn Stud. However, on this occasion he went for £380,000. Luke Lillingston of Kern Lillingston Bloodstock paid Ir£450,000 for lot 384, a bay filly by Danehill out of a half sister to the dam of GISW Danish (Ire). “She has been bought for a client of Henry Cecil’s and will go into training with him,” Lillingston said. “She is a gor- geous filly and Danehill has worked well in the family through Danish and Hawkeye.” Orby Statistics, p2 GOFFS ORBY - WEDNESDAY TOP FIVE COLTS Hip Sire Dam Price (Ir£) 397 Danehill Welsh Love (Ire) 2,100,000 Consigned for Kilcarn Stud Purchased by Demi O’Byrne 248 Danehill Offshore Boom (Ire) 550,000 Consigned by Ashtown House Stud Purchased by Demi O’Byrne 350 Danehill Stylish (GB) 520,000 (Ir£125,000 wnlg ‘00 GOFNOV) Consigned by Abbeville & Meadow Court Studs Purchased by Peter Doyle Bloodstock, agent 446 Kingmambo Grapevine (Ire) 420,000 ($700,000 yrl ‘01 KEEJUL) Consigned by Oak Lodge Stud Purchased by McKeever-St. Lawrence 305 Unfuwain Sabria 380,000 (65,000gns wnlg ‘00 TATDEC) Consigned by Oaklawn Stud Purchased by Shadwell Estates Ltd. PINT GIVEN

James Given, one of Britain's emerging trainers, will be chasing the Autumn Double when he saddles16-1 chance Hugs Dancer (Fr) (Cadeaux Genereux{GB}) in the 2 1/4-mile £120,000 Tote CesarewitchH. on Champions' Day at Newmarket Oct. 20.Should Hugs Dancer be successful, Given's 12 staffwill share the Tote's £10,000 stable staff bonus forany yard landing the double and will also celebratethe win with 1000 cans of beer courtesy of localbrewer Greene King. No trainer has pulled off theCambridgeshire--Cesarewitch H. double since SamDarling in 1925, but Given has a realistic chancefollowing I Cried For You (Ire)'s win in last weekend'sfirst leg. The third year trainer said, “The relentlessgallop of the Cesarewitch will suit him down to theground. He stayed and stayed over two and a halfmiles at Goodwood and the only doubt I would havewould be if it came up soft at Newmarket. He's amuch better horse on good ground. He worked wellyesterday and it would be lovely to pull of the doubleand it would be a great bonus for the staff to win.”

HUGHES TRANSFERRED

Khalid Abdullah's retained jockey Richard Hugheshas been transferred from Cambridge'sAddenbrooke's Hospital to Evelyn Hospital, also inthe university city, where he will remain for an un-specified period after fracturing his left tibia in anaccident at Newmarket last Saturday. It is believedthat his family felt the move would make the riderfeel more comfortable. Doctors are still waiting toapply a new caste to Hughes' leg, but cannot do sountil the swelling subsides.

ANOTHER INDEPENDENCE DAY? Cliveden Stud's Independence (GB) (Selkirk {USA})may yet race again this season with the eight-furlongG1 Hong Kong Mile at Sha Tin Dec. 16 a possible tar-get. The Ed Dunlop-trained homebred was gaining herfourth, and most important, win of the year when suc-cessful in last Saturday's G2 Sun Chariot S. atNewmarket. “There is no decision at this stage but isshe does run again it will be in the Hong Kong Invita-tional.” Cliveden Stud's Philip Freedman told RacingPost. He added, “There is no guarantee that she willrun, but she has come out Saturday’s race fine and theplan at this stage is very much towards training inEngland next year. The reason for the hesitancy inelecting the Sha Tin race is that nominations for theraces are not announced until November 9 and muchwill depend on numbers and actual participants in theraces. I imagine she will be kept ticking over until thenand if it looked like getting an invitation, we would takea view at that time.”

MURTAGH RETURNS

Johnny Murtagh, who escaped serious injury in anasty looking incident when unseated from TrueCrystal (Ire) (Sadler's Wells {USA}) at The Curraghlast Saturday, is to resume race riding at GowranPark's mixed card today. HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL FOR THE SADLER’S WELLSBREED by Peter Falconer

It would be fair to say that relations between theAustralian Thoroughbred industry and the Sadler’sWells breed got off on the wrong foot. At the beginningof the nineties, when the Irish sire phenomenon wassetting the foundations of his remarkable stud career,Sheikh Maktoum al Maktoum put his highly performedstayer Braashee (Ire) into the care of the Hayes familyof Lindsay Park, South Australia, after having reapedconsiderable rewards from an exact same manoeuvreinvolving At Talaq (USA) a few years prior. Unfortu-nately for all concerned, Braashee’s one and only cam-paign Down Under proved to be an absolute debacleand was swiftly brought to an end. The high-class sonof Sadler’s Wells, with a Group 1 victory in theLongchamp Prix Royal Oak under his belt, performedmore like a third-rate handicapper--at best. Any aspira-tions held for the horse were sunk without a trace onthe back of two or three abysmal runs, while the per-formances also did very little for the growing reputationof his sire, at least in this unique part of the world. If anything, matters only deteriorated over the nextdecade. Firstly, the fledgling stud career of Scenic (Ire),the initial son of Sadler’s Wells to be made available tobroodmare owners in Australia, went downhill after arelatively bright start. A notable shuttle stallion at thebeginning of the period, Scenic was subsequently exiledby Irish breeders on the strength of his stud perfor-mance (or lack of it) in his homeland, and then subse-quently allowed to join the unfashionable stallion ranksof Western Australia when commercial breeders basedon the eastern seaboard also had their fill. When theexpensive European purchase Chief Contender (Ire), aG1 Prix du Cadran winner with very similar Europeanrace performance to his paternal half-brother Braashee, managed to beat just one rival home in three ingloriousoutings during the Sydney autumn carnival of 1998,the signs where not good for a bloodline which wastaking all before it on the lush, green, yielding race-tracks of Great Britain, Ireland and France. As luck would have it, it was also about this timethat five youngsters by Sadler’s Wells, specificallyconceived in Ireland to Southern Hemisphere time andsubsequently foaled and reared in Australia, could befound in full training in stables around the country. Putthrough the Gold Coast Magic Millions (one lot) andSydney Easter (four lots) yearling sales of 1997, thequintet was naturally afforded an enviable grounding totheir collective racing career, but to no avail. Only oneof the five, a filly by the name of Rose of Tralee,

showed any sort of return for her connections, theother four failing to record a single victory or evenmake a raceday appearance at all. In fairness, things have not all been bad concerningthe Sadler’s Wells breed Down Under, though the suc-cesses have been few and far between. The importedgallopers Runyon (Ire) and Darazari (Ire) each picked upa nice Group 1 event during brief racing campaigns andwere clearly very handy racehorses on their day, whileBarathea (Ire) did a much better job at stud than he isactually given credit for during his couple of years ofhemisphere hopping. In addition, Scenic has enjoyed amiraculous resurgence which, ironically, coincided withhis departure to Western Australia. So much so, in fact, that he was placed second on the Australian GeneralSires Listing for 2000/01, behind only Danehill (USA),and looks headed for another bumper season. In light of what has taken place over an extendedperiod, however, the next 12 months is ‘crunch time’for the Sadler’s Wells breed in these parts. With two-year-olds from the respective first crop of English 2000Guineas winners King of Kings (Ire) and Entrepreneur(GB) just about to set foot on the domestic racetracks, and three-year-olds by Arc de Triomphe winner Carne-gie (Ire) among the current Classic crop, the time hasarrived for one of the truly great Thoroughbred sires ofour lifetime to have Australian representation commen-surate with his standing on the world stage. Happily, the signs are extremely encouraging. TheEntrepreneurs sold particularly well at yearling salesearlier this year, and King of Kings’ first crop is reportedto be a cracking bunch of young horses. Not to beoutdone, Carnegie has a smart selection of earlyrunners--in particular, Sircarn Damon (NZ), Resound-ingly (Aus) and Amalfi (NZ)--with the necessary scopeto become quality middle-distance performers in an-other six months time. More relevantly, there was aperformance by a grandson of Sadler’s Wells at Flem-ington last weekend which has literally set the pulse ofthe domestic thoroughbred fraternity racing. WhenRoyal Code (Aus), a first-crop son of King’s Theatre(Ire), trounced a smart field of three-year-old males inwinning the Listed VRC Concept Sports S. (1420m),the colt produced a performance which many enthusi-asts domiciled in this neck of the woods would con-sider has been an age in coming. Thankfully, it would now appear as if the memory ofBraashee and his like will be erased sooner rather thanlater.

We had our disapointments, but justto be around a horse like him was a lot of fun. He wasa very courageous horse. Even right now, with thatcrack, he wouldn’t let you know he had it.” Dixie DotCom won the 1999 GII San Fernando Breeders’ Cup S.,the 2000 GII San Pasqual H. and both the GIII TexasMile and GIII Lone Star Park H. in 2001. NTRA Outlines Budget: The National Thoroughbred Racing Association andBreeders’ Cup Limited outlined their combined $59.8million 2002 operating budget at the NTRA’s secondannual membership meeting in Lexington, Kentuckyyesterday. The preliminary budget calls for $58.3 mil-lion in operating expenses and a $1.5 million surplus. The new budget reflects additional membership reve-nues from racetracks and horsemen’s association thatare expected to rejoin the orgainization in the comingyear, as well as increased television and sponsorshiprevenue. The projected surplus will go towards a $2.5million “special stimulus package,” in which the NTRAwill substantially subsidize additional promotional daysat member racetracks and OTBs next year. “The eventsof September 11 and the downturn in the nation'seconomy will likely have a negative effect on consumerspending,” said NTRA Commissioner Tim Smith. “Rec-ognizing this, we're offering our members some addi-tional programs to get fans back to the races.” Thenew package will be in addition to quarterly MysteryMutuel Voucher promotions. “The promotions will begeared toward our 'light' or casual fans, who needadditional incentives to come out to the racetrack morethan once or twice a year,” said Keith Chamblin, NTRAsenior vice president-marketing and industry relations.“At the same time, they will be held on dates whenfans will be exposed to great horseracing from coast tocoast.”

As happens every time he is allowed to run alone onthe lead, Tuozzo left his rivals in the dust, bestingtough contenders like G1 Estrellas Classic winner Mr.Mat and the multiple Group 1-winning mare New RealDeal for his first Group 1 victory. A very versatile five-year-old who has won races from seven to 12 1/2furlongs, Touzzo was favoured as the lone speed in therace. Travelling easily through slow fractions, he hadenough left in the stretch to hold off New Real Deal bya comfortable margin.
