Year 12 Formal Congratulations to the Year 12 students 2016, along with their friends and family for an enjoyable occasion at the Formal last Wednesday. Ms Sharpe certainly created a magical venue for all to enjoy. I wish all our Year 12 students the very best for a well-earned break from study over the summer and congratulate the large number of students who have gained early entry into SCU, Griffith and UNE.

House Names Have you ever wondered where our sporting house names came from? Mrs Raema Perkins, an ex staff member became an amateur sleuth and discovered the following: Lindesay: Named after Mount Lindesay On 6 July 1828, the botanist and explorer Allan Cunningham originally named what we know as Mt Lindesay Mount Hooker after botanist William Hooker and called another mountain (now Mount Barney) by the name Mount Lindesay after Colonel Patrick Lindesay, the Commandant of Troops in NSW. Later, the New South Wales Surveyor-General Thomas Mitchell is believed to have changed the names to be Mount Lindesay and Mount Barney (after Lieutenant-Colonel George Barney) respectively. Richmond: Named after the Richmond River The Richmond River was named by Captain Henry Rouse, the first European to trace the river. It was named after the 5th Duke of Richmond. Fegan: Named after the first School Teacher in Kyogle. Larkin: Named after the first shop and Post Office owner in Kyogle.

Thank you Staff at Kyogle High School constantly go beyond the call of duty, exemplified by those staff who give up their nights as well to go on our Sydney excursions. Huge thank you to Mr Rasborsek, Mr Hanley and Ms Mobbs for attending the Year 10 excursion and to Mr Stewart, Mr Landers and Mrs Bryant who are currently away on the Year 9 excursion. Mr Quantrill organised a special assembly to commemorate Remembrance Day. Student behaviour was excellent and it was fitting to remember this important occasion. Thank you Mr Quantrill. Mr Varcoe and Ms Tulloch have been working on Timetable 2017. This involves time, effort and a clear understanding of the needs of our school. Thank you Mr Varcoe and Ms Tulloch.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) Our community of schools came together on Tuesday to

continue the collaboration around PBL. Thank you to Mr

Hanley who will be leading our school team as well as

working on rewiring our Well Being Procedures in line with

new policy updates. As always it was a pleasure have Mrs

Lyn Parker from Lismore District Office working with the

group.

From the Deputy’s Desk

Welcome to this issue of the KHS newsletter. Last Wednesday the Year 12 Formal was held at the Bowling Club. The P&C supported a most wonderful evening. Year 12 dressed beautifully for the occasion. Congratulations to Year 12 on reaching this milestone and congratulations to all who assisted our Year Adviser Ms Sharpe in presenting such an important evening. While it was unfortunate I was absent from the Formal, I was attending the Year 10 excursion to Sydney. This was a wonderful experience, due mainly to Mr B Rasborsek’s fantastic itinerary and organisation and supported by Miss J Mobbs. The behaviour and engagement in activities of our students was excellent and they did themselves and their school proud. There were many highlights on the excursion including dinner at the revolving restaurant at Centrepoint and catching the magnificent production of Aladdin at the Capitol Theatre. Year 9 are enjoying Sydney as I write this column and all reports indicate their behaviour and enjoyment of activities is also very positive. Finally an update on the Positive Behaviour for Learning

journey. The Kyogle community of schools has been

working to develop a draft matrix of expected behaviours

around school. This will be presented to staff, students

and our community for consultation and refinement,

before it is finalised for progressive implementation from

2017.

GRIP LEADERSHIP On Friday 4th November , a group of students from Year 7 - Year 11 travelled to Southern Cross University in Lismore to attend the GRIP Leadership Conference. At this conference we learnt leadership skills such as ‘how to engage the school with new and exciting fundraising ideas’ and ‘school events’. It was such a good day which left us all feeling inspired to make a positive change in the school. A big thankyou to Ms McDonough for organising the trip. We would like to encourage everyone to attend next year! Bella Slater & Tom Masters (Year 10)
