New Funding Opportunities Prince's Countryside Fund Re-Opens for Applications (UK) The Prince's Countryside Fund has announced that it has re-opened for applications. Prince's Countryside Fund Re-Opens for Applications (UK)

The Prince's Countryside Fund has announced that it has re-opened  for applications. The aim of the fund is to help improve the long-term sustainability of the British countryside.  In this funding round up to £500,000 is available to support projects that:

Help The Homeless (UK)

Help the Homeless, a national Charity which aims to help homeless people throughout the United Kingdom to resume a normal life, is currently accepting applications from small and medium sized charities and voluntary organisations. Grants of up to £3,000 are available towards capital costs to support projects that assist disadvantaged individuals in their return to mainstream society, through residential or training facilities. Grants to larger charities may be considered if the project is suitable innovative and only possible for a larger organisation to develop it.

Previous projects supported include:

A  grant of £3,000 to the Amber Foundation to enable the Foundation to buy new bedroom furniture for their residential centre in Devon, where every year over 60 unemployed, homeless young people are able to rebuild their lives and gain the motivation, confidence, self-esteem and skills for independent living.

A  grant of £2000 to Spires, a South London Homeless charity towards the cost of providing their daily services to clients, including food and clothing.

Money for Life Challenge (UK)

The Lloyds Banking Group has announced that for a second year, it will be running the Money for Life Challenge. 

The programme offers grants of £200 to teams of young people aged 16-24 in work-based learning, adult community learning, training organisations, and further education to run innovative money management projects that benefit their communities.  In collaboration with a project sponsor, teams of young people design their own project around issues that affect them. Last year’s teams addressed a wide range of topics, from camping on a budget to raising awareness of the hazards of payday lenders. The best projects from each nation have an opportunity to compete for a place at the national final event and the UK Grand Final event in London. 

Applications close on 22nd November 2013.

Free Trees for School, Community and Youth Groups (UK)

The Woodland Trust has 4000 free tree packs to give away to schools, community and youth groups this autumn. The free tree packs are available for planting on one publicly accessible site. Each pack is worth £30, £105 or £420. All applicants need to do is find a suitable site and supply the volunteer planters and tree protection. Pre-school, school, college and university groups interested in a small pack of 30 trees should head straight over to the school pack page.

McDonald’s KickStart Grants (UK)

McDonalds has announced that the next deadline for applications to its Kick Start Grants Programme is the 31st December 2013. 

The aim of the programme is to support community football throughout the UK.   A total of £75,000 is available this year through the McDonalds Kick Start scheme and local community football teams can apply for grants of between £500 and £2,500 for activities such as:

Individuals can apply for a grant on behalf of their club, as long as they are recognised by their national FA, and have at least one team at or below junior (U18) level.   Applicants must be over 18 and involved with the club at some level, such as a coach, volunteer or parent. For example, Coplestonians FC received a helping hand to carry out vital clubhouse development - the roof and floor were repaired and they introduced running water and electricity to the facility. The club can now offer refreshments to all teams and parents, as well as provide lighting for the changing areas during evening training sessions.

Idlewild Trust (UK)

The Idlewild Trust has announced that the next closing date for applications to its grant making programme is the 26th February 2014.

The Idlewild Trust is a grant making trust that supports registered charities concerned with the encouragement of the performing and fine arts and crafts, the advancement of education within the arts and the preservation for the benefit of the public of lands, buildings and other objects of beauty or historic interest in the United Kingdom. 

Recent grants awarded include:

A grant of £3,000 to the Birmingham Royal Ballet to give young people with a talent for dance free ballet lessons.

A grant of £1,000 to the Vale of Glamorgan Festival 2013 for the presentation of two concerts by the Estonian choir Vox Clamantis, featuring three world premieres of new choral works.

Polden-Puckham Charitable Foundation (UK)

The Polden-Puckham Charitable Foundation Grant is provided and administered by the Polden-Puckham Charitable Foundation and is available for Third Sector Organisations in the UK. The main objectives of the foundation are to:

Develop ways of resolving violent conflicts peacefully, and of addressing their underlying causes

Address the pressures and conditions that risk global environmental breakdown.

Grants are made between the values of £5,000 and £15,000 and are provided for between one and

EcoNexus which received a grant of £8,000 to examine and promote the understanding of new technologies that are potentially harmful to the environment and communities, and the influences and interests that lie behind them.

The Fidelio Trust Grants Programme (UK)

The Fidelio Trust offers grants of up to £5,000 in support of the Arts, in particular the dramatic and operatic arts, music, speech and dance. The Trustees aim to help individuals and groups such as Colleges, Arts Festivals and other arts organisations who would not be able to carry out a project or activity without financial support. Funding is available:

For tuition or coaching To participate in external competitions To be supported for a specially arranged performance To receive support for a special publication, musical composition or work of art.

The Skinners’ Company Lady Neville Charity (UK)

Small charities and not for profit organisations working in the areas of local heritage and the performing and visual arts can apply for funding through the Lady Neville Charity grants programme. The Leche Trust (UK)

The Leche Trust has announced that the next deadline for applications to its grant making programme is the 20th December 2013. 

The Trust makes grants for charitable purposes, in particular for the furtherance of education or academic research and the support of the National Trust and the preservation of rural England, and financing the visits of teachers and students abroad. The main focuses of the Trusts grant making activities are:

£2 Million Grant Scheme to Boost Childcare Launched (England)

The Government has re-announced that a new grant scheme is available for people who want to set up a new nursery or a childminding business. 

The scheme is designed to get more women into work and help drive economic growth by offering grants of up to £500 to help cover things like legal and insurance costs, training, equipment, and adapting premises. Applicants will also be encouraged to join up with a free business mentor and get specially-tailored business start-up advice, to help launch up to 6,000 new childcare businesses start-ups. The grants available include:

£250 for new childminding businesses setting up in England £500 for new childminding businesses that will provide care for disabled children £500 for new nursery, out of school club, or childcare on domestic premises setting up in

England.

The scheme has been funded for one year with a fixed budget of £2 million. Should the funding be over-subscribed before March 2014 the scheme will terminate at the point where the scheme funds

Creative Employment Programme (England)

The UK Government has announced that the next closing date for applications to the Creative Employment programme is the 25th October  2013. 

The £15 million, National Lottery funded programme is aimed at increasing work and training opportunities for unemployed young people. The programme will provide funding for 6,500 new traineeships, apprenticeships and paid internship opportunities to help young unemployed people aged 16 to 24 enter the arts and cultural workforce. Employment created will be in a wide range of disciplines, from technical to administrative roles, provided they are located in England and fall within the Arts Council England's footprint of:

Music Dance Theatre Literature Visual Arts Contemporary Craft Combined Arts Carnival Circus Galleries Museums Libraries.

The programme will provide part wage grants to employers who create new apprenticeship and internship job opportunities for young unemployed people aged 16-24.

Government Launches UK Aid Match Scheme (UK)

The Department for International Development (DFID) has launched the first full funding round of the new phase of UK Aid Match.  

UK Aid Match is a fund that matches pound for pound public donations to appeals for development activities focused on poverty reduction in developing countries.  DFID will reserve at least £1 million per funding round to match fund appeals run by small organisations (defined as organisations with an annual income of less than £1 million, averaged over the last 3 years). UK Aid Match is open to any UK based not-for-profit organisation running an appeal in the UK for public donations from the UK public for poverty reduction projects in developing countries (a list of eligible benefitting countries is provided in the G1 General guidance for applicants   .  DFID will match every pound donated by UK

individuals, up to a maximum of £5 million per appeal and UK Aid Match will support projects of up to 3 years duration. 

The deadline for the submission of concept notes is the 1st November 2013.  Applicants successful at this stage will then be invited to submit full proposals by the 6th January 2014.

Wallace & Gromit’s Children’s Foundation (UK)

The Wallace & Gromit’s Children’s Foundation has announced that its grants making programme has re-opened for applications. 

The Foundation supports projects in children’s hospitals and hospices throughout the UK to enrich and enhance the lives of patients. Projects that could be considered by the Foundation include amongst others:

Arts, music, play and leisure programmes Facilities to support families of children treated in hospitals or hospices Care and facilities in hospices Supporting children with physical and emotional difficulties Medical equipment. 

In the past, the average grant awarded was just over £9,000.

Previous projects supported include:

Naomi House Children's Hospice Winchester which received funding for new play equipment and art materials.

The Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh, which received funding towards a new family accommodation facility to enable more parents to stay near their children.

Community Radio Fund (UK)

Telecom’s Regulator Ofcom, has announced that the Community Radio Fund has re-opened for applications.

The costs involved in using volunteers. There is no upper limit of grant that can be applied for, however applicants are asked to take note of previous grants awarded for an indication of realistic award figures. Grants can only be made to community radio licensees which are broadcasting under a community radio licence (and not an RSL, for example). The average grant awarded over the last few years has been in the region if £15,000.

Stelios Award For Disabled Entrepreneurs (UK)

The Stelios Philanthropic Foundation is giving disabled entrepreneurs in the UK the chance to win £50,000 prize to fund the further growth of their business, and become Stelios Disabled Entrepreneur of the Year 2013.

To be eligible to enter individuals must have:

A recognised disability or long term health condition Own at least 25% management stake in their company Have a turnover in excess of £10,000 Have been trading for between 1 and 5 years and the business must be registered in the UK.

This Award is sponsored by Sir Stelios Hajiloannou, the entrepreneur best known for founding easyJet and is run by Leonard Cheshire which works for serve disabled people around the world.

The Quaker Housing Trust has announced that the next deadline for applications is the 8th November 2013. 

The Quaker Housing Trust provides grants and interest free loans to housing projects that cater for people with mental and physical health problems, social disadvantage and abuse, etc..   This can include:

Converting, renovating  or refurbishing property Building new housing, buying property and/or land Expanding an existing housing project

Funding for Links with Japan (UK)

The Daiwa Foundation which supports closer links between Britain and Japan is seeking applications under its small grants programme.

Grants of £3,000 - £7,000 are available to individuals, societies, associations or other bodies in the UK or Japan to promote and support interaction between the two countries. Daiwa Foundation Small Grants can cover all fields of activity, including educational and grassroots exchanges, research travel, the organisation of conferences, exhibitions, and other projects and events that fulfill this broad objective. New initiatives are especially encouraged.

Previously supported projects include:

The Beckfoot School (Bingley) which received a grant of £3,000 to support a two-week curriculum-based school exchange visit by ten students and two teachers to Hiroshima Kokusai High School.

Netherthong Primary School (West Yorkshire) which received a grant of £4,000 to support for a week-long school exchange visit to their Japan partner school by 15 Year 6 pupils to enhance links with its partner school Mioyoshigaoka Elementary School.

Sport England Launches its Get Equipped Grants Programme (England)

Sport England has announced that its “Get Equipped” grants programme is now open for applications. 

This programme provides grants of between £300 and £10,000 to not-for-profit organisations to purchase sports equipment that will help increase the number of disabled young people (aged 14+) and adults regularly playing sport .  This might include:

Sports clubs Voluntary organizations Local authorities Schools Governing bodies of sport.

The total amount of funding available is £1 million. Projects must be focused on sports that are recognised by Sport England. Arts Council - Strategic Touring Programme (England)

The Arts Council, England has announced that its Strategic Touring Programme has re-opened for applications.

The £45 million Strategic touring programme aims to encourage collaboration between organisations, so more people across England experience and are inspired by the arts, particularly in places which rely on touring for much of their arts provision. The funding is available to both organisations and individuals. Partnerships, networks and consortia can also apply. These can include:

Promoters Producers Artists Agencies Companies Marketing or audience development specialists Or / and local authority representatives or any other kind of organisation or individual.

Grants need to be more than £10,000 per project.

Sport England Launches 2nd Bidding Round of its Inclusive Sport Programme (England)

Sport England has announced that the 2nd funding round of its Inclusive Sports programme is now open for applications. 

This fund is for projects that increase participation by disabled people in sport. The Inclusive Sport Fund has been set up by Sport England with £8 million of National Lottery Funding. It will invest in programmes designed to grow the number of disabled young people (age 14+) and adults regularly playing sport. The fund is open to not for profit organisations, as well as local authorities and educational establishments (including schools and colleges). Private sector organisations can apply but must demonstrate that the project is for the public good or a charitable purpose. Organisations

can apply for revenue grants in excess of £10,000. Projects requiring less than £10,000 should consider applying to Sport England’s Small grants programme. Sport England are looking for innovative, scalable and replicable projects that make it easier and more enjoyable for disabled people to take part in sport and physical activity more often.

Organisations funded in round 1 included:

The Wheelchair Football Association which received a grant of £352,381, the Stockport, East Cheshire and High Peak Cerebral Palsy Society which received a grant of £193,131.

Henshaws Society for Blind People  which received a grant of £19,968.

Comic Relief International Grants Programme Re-opens for Applications (UK)

Following a strategic review of its funding, Comic Relief has announced that its new International grant making programme is now open for applications. 

Within its international grant making programme, Comic relief will world towards a world free of poverty and will aim to achieve seven goals.  These are:

Women aged 15-49 and children under five have improved health Disadvantaged children and adults gain access to and attain a good

quality education Women and girls are equal and respected members of society Slum dwellers have an improved quality of life Children and young people at risk are safer with greater opportunities to

increase their skills and life prospects People affected by HIV have an improved quality of life Poor people can improve their income through trade, enterprise and

employment  and using sport to bring about positive change. 

The funding will be focused on Sub-saharan Africa.  Funding for projects elsewhere will be by invitation only. 

The first deadline for submitting a stage 1 proposal is noon, 31st October 2013.

The Kids Fund (UK)

The Field Studies Council is an independent educational charity committed to raising awareness about the natural world. The Council works through a network of 17 residential and day Centres in the UK providing courses for schools and colleges at all levels in addition to adult Individuals & Families courses, outreach education, training and consultancy. The Kids Fund aims to bring environmental understanding to disadvantaged young people by attending a course at a Field Studies Council centre. It helps disadvantaged young people to attend a course who may otherwise be excluded due to some form of disadvantage - health, mobility, deprivation or financial. Funding will normally be up to 80% of the cost of your group’s course to an FSC Field Centre to a maximum of £3000.

Funding to Support Family Based Projects (UK)

The Kelly Family Charitable Trust is open to applications from registered charities whose activities involve all or most family members in initiatives that support and encourage the family to work as a cohesive unit in tackling problems that face one or more of its members. The fund also welcomes applications from sports and health-related charities whose activities comply with the above criteria. Grants are of between £1,000 and £5,000, but higher grants may be considered.

Projects supported in the past include:

The Hill’s Trust Home School Community Project which is a family education support project based in Hill’s Trust Primary School in Govan. The Project promotes parental involvement at all levels throughout the school and works directly with parents/carers and pupils. It offers support with issues such as attendance, behaviour and family issues, as well as a range of other services. The School is working with Glasgow City council to share its good practice with the aim of expanding the model to all Glasgow Schools.

Comic Relief UK Grants Programme Re-opens for Applications (UK)

Following a strategic review of its funding, Comic Relief has announced that its new UK grant making programme is now open for applications. Through its new UK Main Fund, Comic Relief will provide funding for activities that tackle complex problems and create positive social change across the UK. To be eligible for funding projects must address at least of five themes. These are:

BETTER FUTURES

This theme focuses on supporting young people who have limited opportunities and face significant challenges. This could be because of where they live, family experience, poor mental health, teenage pregnancy, caring responsibilities, homelessness or drug and alcohol use.

SAFER LIVESThis theme aims to support people who face violence, abuse and exploitation.

Comic Relief predominantly fund work with those aged 11 and upwards. There

is no upper age limit.

HEALTHIER FINANCESThis theme aims to support those in severe financial hardship.

STRONGER COMMUNITIESUnder this theme, we’ll make small grants to locally-based groups or

organisations in areas of disadvantage that have a clear understanding of the

needs of their community and are working to address them. All applications are

This theme aims to empower and give a voice to marginalised groups of people,

so that they can challenge injustice and bring about positive changes for those

who face discrimination and stigma.

Royal Academy of Engineering ERA Foundation Entrepreneurs Award (UK)

The Royal Academy of Engineering has announced that it is seeking applications to the ERA Foundation Entrepreneurs Award.

The £40,000 Award has been established to identify entrepreneurial researchers, working in UK universities, in the field of electro-technology, who are at an early stage in their career. The award will be presented to an individual or team demonstrating considerable entrepreneurial promise and the potential to benefit the UK’s future prosperity.

The winning entry will receive a prize of £10,000 along with a further £30,000 to invest in the development of the winning idea. In addition to the first award, two

Funding for Schools Science Projects (UK)

The Royal Society has announced that its Partnership Grant has re-opened for applications. 

Through the scheme grants of up to £3,000 are available to support teachers, scientists and engineers help develop science projects. The aim is to make the teaching of science more interesting within primary and secondary schools. The Partnership grants scheme forms partnerships to allow teachers to increase their scientific knowledge and to give scientists and engineers the chance to develop their communication skills and engage with enquiring young minds. Any UK primary or secondary school teacher or practicing scientist/engineer can apply as long as the students involved in the project are between 5 and 18.

Examples of previously funded projects include:

Germoe, Godolphin, Marazion and Sithney Primary Schools in Cornwall, who received a grant of £3,000 for the identification of pests & biological pest controls in indoor salad crops.

St Mary’s CE Primary School pupils who made a bridge out of newspapers and studied all types of bridges, making models and testing them.

European Commission seeks "Capital of Innovation" (UK)

The European Commission has started the search for the first European Capital of Innovation, or iCapital. The prize will reward the city which is building the best “innovation ecosystem”, connecting citizens, public organisations, academia, and business.  The contest is open to cities which have over 100.000 inhabitants at the time of submitting this application.  For the purpose of this Award, a "city" is understood to be an urban area, excluding metropolitan areas,

larger urban zones and conurbations, and is understood as an administrative unit governed by a city council or another form of democratically elected body.   The European Commission are looking for innovative initiatives which are already running (at least since 1 January 2010), which have been delivering significant improvements in the whole innovation ecosystem. Application should be submitted by the city's mayor or members of the city administration expressly designated by the mayor.  An independent panel of experts will select the winner in spring 2014, with the city chosen receiving €500,000 towards scaling up its efforts.

Nuffield Foundation - Research and Innovation Grants (UK)

The Nuffield Foundation is inviting applications through its Research and Innovation Grants programme. The Foundation supports charitable and non-profit organisations with creative ideas to identify change or interventions which will have a practical impact for researchers, policy makers, and practitioners.

There are currently four grant programmes that support research and innovation for beneficial social change.  These are:

Law in Social Society Education Children and Families; Open Door which is for projects that advance social well being, but lie

outside the Foundation’s main programme areas. 

Grants are mainly for research (usually carried out in universities or independent research institutes) but are also made for practical developments or innovation (often in voluntary sector organisations). Grants normally range between £10,000 and £250,000.

The Foundation makes small grants to support activities that support the study of the Japanese language and culture, School, Education and Youth exchanges. In the past the Foundation has made grants towards visits the between the UK and Japan between by teachers and young people and the teaching and development of Japanese language and cultural studies in schools.

Organisations that have successfully applied to the Foundation include:

Ashlyns School, Berkhamsted which received a grant of £1,500 to run courses in Japanese language and culture for sixth form students.

County Upper School, Bury St Edmunds, which received a grant of £5,000 to help fund a study tour to Japan by eight Year 11 students and two teachers.

The Peter Cruddas Foundation (England & Wales)

The Peter Cruddas Foundation is a grant making Foundation that aims to support charitable works that benefit disadvantaged and disengaged young people in the UK by ensuring that their funding reaches those most in need.

Priorities for funding are:

Pathways/support for young disadvantaged or disengaged people in the age range 14 to 30 into education, training or employment

Work experience/skills projects for young people aged 16 to 30 Youth work in London particularly evening work for disadvantaged

To be eligible for funding an organisation must be a registered charity or an organisation / individual supported by a UK charity. There are no minimum or maximum grants and projects can be funded for more than one year.

with great ideas to make their communities better places to live are now invited to apply for funding to turn their ideas into reality.

The People's Health Trust has opened its Active Communities programme in 3 areas across Britain.  Active Communities is a funding programme for community groups and not-for-profit organisations, with an income of less than £350,000 a year, that are seeking investment of between £5,000 and £50,000 for projects lasting up to two years. The projects should take place within a small area for a small group of people such as 20 or 30 streets or a couple of villages.  Using money raised by society lotteries through The Health Lottery, People's Health Trust has opened Active Communities in the following areas:

Edinburgh, West and East Lothian, Falkirk, and Midlothian Wolverhampton, Dudley, Sandwell and Walsall Islington, Haringey, Enfield, Tower Hamlets and Hackney.

The Radcliffe Trust – Music Grants (UK)

The Radcliffe Trust has announced that the next deadline for applications to its Music making grants programme is the 31st January 2014. 

Through its grant making programme, the Radcliffe Trust supports classical music performance and training especially chamber music, composition and music education. Particular interests within music education are music for children and adults with special needs, youth orchestras and projects at secondary and higher levels, including academic research. The Trustees respond to applications and also initiate their own projects.  Applicant must be a registered charity or an exempt charity.  Applications are considered under eight headings.  These are:

Composition and contemporary music Bursaries for courses and summer schools Limited to U.K. based students Music therapy / special needs Academic research / projects Youth orchestras;  performance projects Educational projects Miscellaneous.

Registered charities that work with disadvantaged children under the age of 25 can apply for funding of up to £10,000 through the Ironmongers Company’s grants programme. In particular the company wants to support projects that provide opportunities for disadvantaged children and young people to fulfil their potential and educational activities that develop learning, motivation and skills.

Projects could, for example, support:

Special educational needs Address behavioral problems Promote citizenship, parenting or life skills.

Preference will be given to projects piloting new approaches where the outcomes will be disseminated to a wider audience. Although the grants are available within the UK preference is given to projects in inner London.

Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies (UK)

The Society’s Schools Committee makes grants to schools to help promote the teaching of Latin and Roman studies. Most of the grants are awarded for the purchase of textbooks and other books on Roman topics, but the Committee also makes awards to groups and schools organising lectures or study days on Roman themes, and has recently made money available for archaeology fieldwork bursaries. Applications from schools planning to start courses in Latin are particularly welcome. Grants usually range from £50 to £500.

Through the programme UK charities can apply for funding for the care of and services for blind people, and the prevention and/or cure of blindness.  The Trust also supports projects that support the long-term care of people with learning disabilities either in a residential care or supported living.  Around 12 charities are supported each year with grants varying from £5,000 to around £20,000. 

Examples of previous awards made include:

A grant of £12,000 to develop a volunteering programme to supplement a charity’s care package for residents by providing volunteer-led day activities.

A local charity which provides long term day care and employment for individuals until retirement was awarded £10,000 to help fund the equipping and refurbishment of new premises.

A  charity was awarded £8,500 to fund the introduction of music therapy in one of its care homes for residents and day service users.

The Department for the Environment and Climate Change (DECC) has announced the launch of a new £20 million Local Authority Green Deal Fund.

Local Authorities, together with their local partners can bid for between £1 million and £3 million of capital funding to come forward with street/area based proposals for funding to deliver Green Deal plans to as many households as possible.  The Green Deal makes available energy-saving improvements to homes and businesses. 

Applications may be submitted at any time up to the 31st December 2013 (or when the £20m of funding is exhausted, whichever is the sooner).
