Thorness Bay Residential Report

15-17 May 2017

The report below is a mixture of Year 6 diaries and extracts from our assembly

notes about Thorness bay. We hope you enjoy our work!

Journey and ‘Water Wars’ – Isla

Day 1 ( Monday)

On Monday the 15th of May 2017 Year 5

and 6 set off for the Thorness Bay

residential on the Isle of Wight. We set

off at 10:00 am to go to the ferry port.

We were all packed and ready with our

waterproofs, suitcases and our spare

clothes!

On the ferry, everyone played the post-it

note game and top trumps (I supplied the

post-its!). In the post-it game, I was Ed

Sheeran!

Once we had

arrived by taxi

to Thorness Bay, we dumped our luggage off and

met our instructors Maria and Farron (his nickname

was ‘Frazzle’). Maria was from Glasgow and had an

amazing Scottish

accent!

Then we played a game called ‘Water

shore’ to get to know our instructors – this

involved jumping from water to shore

without hesitating! When you were out

every one had to say “Oggy Oggy Oggy - out out out!!!” then you became a

cheetah checka!

Secondly, we started ‘Water wars’. My favourite games were ‘Drip, drip drench’

and ‘Fishy fishy’ [including the ‘Funky funky sea weed!’ song] because they

involved running around and getting wet!

Our Chalets and food – Bethany

After Water Wars, we went to see our chalets. We got given a key to our

chalets and they were about a 4 or 5 minute walk from the main building. Our

chalets had a living area, a kitchen, a bathroom and two bedrooms. We

unpacked and made the chalets tidy. Then Maria said “You’s got to go hurry up

now, guys, otherwise you’s will miss your wee dinner!” For dinner we had

chicken nuggets, beans and chips.

On Tuesday morning we had an inspection so we were all made our beds and

chalets as tidy as possible! The chalet which won the inspection was chalet 120

because they had good energy use, tidiness and cleanliness.

The meals were good and we ate them in a large dining area. For breakfasts we

had bacon or sausages with beans and hash browns. For lunch on Tuesday we

had pizza and on Monday and Wednesday we had sandwiches and packed

lunches. For dinner on Monday we had chicken nuggets and chips and on

Tuesday we had macaroni cheese, cottage pie or jacket potato. And they were

all delicious!

There was a good playground which had a

lovely view from the top of the rope climb. We

went to the playground in free time and on the

morning when we all woke up early!

Scrapheap challenge – Joseph

On Monday evening we went over to the

reception area to do the scrapheap

challenge! The instructors explained to us

to get the scrap we needed to play lots of

mini games like alphabet karaoke and an

imitation games and the two Sophie’s had

to imitate Mr Milton.

We were split into two teams the team

names were ‘The ketchup kids’ and the

other team name was ‘The Purple

pineapples’. The purple pineapples used

their scrap to make a steam train. And the

ketchup kids made their mascot into ‘The

ketchup King’.

Aeroball and Circus Skills – Sophie MD

On Tuesday morning we were put into our groups for the rest of the activities

and my group had circus skills.

Circus skills were fun and I enjoyed learning how to juggle and how to use the

diablo. We did all sorts of other activities including plate spinning, devil sticks

and special swingers. We also dressed up as

clowns as this great photo of Zak and William

and Mr Milton shows!

I really liked testing all the circus skills and my

favourite was the plate spinning and at the

end of the workshop I could juggle, but only with two balls.

Our second activity was aeroball and this was one of my favourite activities.

We first went over the rules getting on and off the trampolines. We then

played the game on the grass before actually playing them on the trampoline.

My favourite one was the proper aeroball.

Just before the end of the activity our teachers had a go at aeroball: Mr Pascoe

vs Mr Milton- Mr Milton won, and Maria vs Mrs Carret- Mrs Carret won.

Water roller – Sophie B

On Tuesday afternoon we did the Water Roller this was great fun. We had to

be dry to get in the Water Roller or it was too slippy. It was very hot in the

swimming pool room and even hotter in the

water roller. To move the Water Roller, you

had to stand up and put your hands at the top

of it and walk. Many people fell over, like in

the picture opposite! You had to wait for the

other person to get up before you could

continue!

After every one had a go we did a

time trial. We had to be as quick

as we can. There were six winners

(three Pairs) all with twenty-nine

seconds. This is what we look like

doing the Water Roller. Then we

were allowed to go in the pool. It

was a lot cooler in the pool. We

also went on the flume at the end

of our session!

Buggy building – Zakariya

On Tuesday afternoon our group went and did buggy building which is when

you have to do a range of activities to try and get your parts to build a large

buggy e.g. make a dance, squat together as a team and see who could hold it

for the longest.

After the activities, we got our buggy

parts and then we started to build!

There were two teams and our team

was called ‘The Maybes’; the other

team was called ‘The Speedy Sloths’.

Our team was really bad at doing knots

to tie the ropes around the buggy but it

just about managed to stay stable. Once both of our teams were done, we had

to pull our buggies in a race down the hill.

The race was really close but the

Maybes just won the race but our

buggy collapsed when we finished but

the other teams stayed still, but a

member of the speedy sloths was

slightly run over, unfortunately (they

were fine afterwards!).

After the race we had to destroy our buggies and put all our parts back to their

original places.

Beach walk – William

It was an overcast day on Wednesday although it was dry to begin with. Then

when we were walking down the rocky pass down to the beach, it started to

pour down with rain!

When we finally arrived, I knew this

would be a great place for crabbing

even though it was incredibly flat.

There were tonnes of rocks to lift up

and lots of small pools in the sand to go

looking in but little did we know that

we were going to find something much

stranger than crabs. We were all lifting up rocks from left to right finding tiny

crabs underneath the small rocks, here is Isla with a crab:

It started to flood down in the rain. it was time to head

back. Before we did, Mr Milton showed me a Little Egret

in the distance hunting for crabs, here is a picture of it.

We started to lift up our last few rocks when I suddenly

found this fish. It was longer than the palm of my hand

I called Mr Milton

over to have a look

at the fish and he took a picture of it (we have

since identified it as a Common Blenny). Then

it got so wet that we had to head back and

that was the end of our Beach walk.
