Dear Parishioners, It was great to see so many people at Mass on Ash Wednesday, as we began Lent with the ceremony of placing ashes on our forehead. The three areas we look at during Lent are: our prayer – can I spend more time in prayer, at Mass, praying the rosary, attending Stations of the Cross, Adoration of the Eucharist, or quiet prayer every day; fasting – giving up something, food, drink, impatience, telling lies, being dishonest, gossiping about others or living an immoral life; almsgiving – what we give up we give away, possibly to Project Compassion (envelopes are at the back of the Church). During Lent, we have an extra Mass at Sunnybank at 6.30 am Friday and at Acacia Ridge at 6.30 pm Friday (following the Stations of the Cross at 5.45 pm). Also at Sunnybank during Lent on Saturday at 10:30 am, we have Mary's Way of the Cross (Stations of the Cross). At the Sunday Masses during Lent, we will pray some parts of the Mass differently. At the Penitential Rite we will pray the Confiteor (I Confess). We will sing “Lord Hear My Prayer” at the beginning and the end of the Prayers of the Faithful. After Communion, we will have a few minutes of quiet prayer and reflection. There are still some Little Black Books (for adults) and Little Purple books (for children) available for $4.00 each on the back table of our churches for daily prayer and reflection during Lent. The Bible Study Group is meeting in the media room at Sunnybank every Tuesday from 9.00 am to 11.30 am. You are invited to join this group to learn more about our scriptures. Aria Angels which is for children from birth to Pre-school, continues this Wednesday, 8th March. This is a very lively group of children and their parents or grandparents who enjoy song, prayer and play. See page 3 of this newsletter for more details. Lent is a time of soul searching and cleansing. Don’t forget to attend the Sacrament of Penance (Reconciliation). Reconciliation is celebrated at Sunnybank at 11.00am and 5.00pm on Saturdays. First Sunday of Lent: Year A

Introduction: Lent began a few days ago, on Ash Wednesday. Some of us are already deeply engaged on our Lenten journey to Easter. Others need encouragement to get started. Perhaps the scripture readings we hear during this Mass will enable the former to persevere and rouse us all to an awareness of our need for sober assessment of where we are in our Christian life.

First Reading: Genesis 2: 7-9, 3: 1-7 The reading reminds us of our innate or inherited tendency to undervalue our relationship with our Creator in favour of inordinate love of self and self-will. We need salvation.

Second Reading: Romans 5: 12-19 Sin entered the world through one man, Adam. Healing, forgiveness and redemption are offered to us in God’s incarnate son, Jesus the Christ.

Gospel: Matthew 4: 1-11 The devil is portrayed as using God’s good creation and God’s word in his attempt to lead Jesus astray. Jesus is shown as using God’s word properly understood to reject the tempter.

Splendid and most enjoyable! Our first New Year's Mass Our sincere thanks to Fr Dan, Fr Chan and Fr Harry for concelebrating at Our Lady's Thanksgiving Mass for the New Year. Warm bonds of friendship were re-kindled for the Year of the Rooster with a lovely multicultural flavour, unique to OLOL. The gentle hilarity flowed on to a festive re-union lunch of delicacies, songs and dances enjoyed by friends from other Parishes, the Chinese Catholic Community, the Indonesian Catholic Family and community groups like the Taiwan Women's League. Thank you all, especially to our helpers, for your cheerful participation! Blessings for the New Year ... Celine & Patrick

‘THE JOY OF LOVE’ FROM POPE FRANCIS

The Tenderness of an Embrace

28. Against this backdrop of love so central to the Christian experience of marriage and the family, another virtue stands out, one often overlooked in our world of frenetic and superficial relationships. It is tenderness. Let us consider the moving words of Psalm 131. As in other biblical texts (e.g. Ex 4:22; Is 49:15; PS 27:10), the union between the lord and his faithful ones is expressed in terms of parental love. Here we see a delicate and tender intimacy between mother and child: the image is that of a babe sleeping in his mother’s arms after being nursed. As the Hebrew word gamul suggests, the infant is now fed and clings to his mother, who takes him to her bosom. There is a closeness that is conscious and not simply biological. Drawing on this image, the Psalmist sings: “I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a child quieted at it’s mother breast” (Ps 131:2).

SUNNYBANK SOCIAL JUSTICE COMMUNITY DAY OF PRAYER AND FASTING FOR REFUGEES: SUNDAY, 5 MARCH

In the wake of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference's call for the closure of Australia's offshore processing centres on Nauru and Manus Island and for all refugees and people seeking asylum on those islands to be brought to Australia, this is an important way in which Catholics can express their commitment to dignity, compassion and justice for all people who have fled their homelands and sought Australia's protection.

Prayer for the refugees For people from many nations – Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia, Iraq, Myanmar, Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic …. As they are forced to leave their families, homes and all that they know, may they be guided by God’s loving Spirit of wisdom embracing them and keeping them safe. For countries who are providing shelter – Turkey, Pakistan, Lebanon, Iran, Ethiopia and Jordan. … May their efforts to support people in great need be richly blessed. For those waiting to have their status determined - and for those who can no longer wait. … May the Spirit’s gifts of hope, courage and strength grow daily in them as their days drag by. For those in detention. … While experiencing loneliness, hardship and uncertainty, may they come to know God’s love for them through the kindness and support of many. For our parliamentarians and law makers. … May the God of hospitality and mercy fill them to act courageously for the good of those most in need. For those individuals and organizations who provide services to those who have arrived in Australia. … May your Holy Spirit’s gift of love and generosity grow in them daily. For ourselves. … May your Holy Spirit open our hearts, minds and hands so that many refugees and asylum seekers may make their homes in Australia.
