Thinking through Quality Questioning—2 DAY Workshop Facilitated by Beth D. Sattes

Questioning has long been recognized as an essential tool for effective teaching and learning. Now, more than ever, teachers understand the importance of helping students develop the skills of thinking, asking questions, and developing responsibility for their own learning. Explore the research-based framework for questioning from Thinking Through Quality Questioning, the text for the session. Practice collaboratively writing and editing questions to engage students in thinking. Learn strategies and tools for scaffolding student thinking as they respond to questions. Deepen understanding of discussion as an instructional strategy, considering the rubric for “questioning and discussion” in Kentucky’s Teacher Professional Growth Effectiveness System (TPGES) —as well as a rubric to use with your students as they learn how to discuss thoughtfully. Investigate norms to help create a classroom culture that encourages student thinking. Participate in thinking routines that engage ALL learners in responding to questions—and reflect on how you might implement selected ones in the classroom to facilitate thinking and response-ability for learning. This two-day learning session is highly interactive, modeling effective questioning strategies throughout. The session facilitator will be Beth Sattes, a co-developer of QUILT (Questioning and Understanding to Improve Learning and Thinking) and co-author of the text and two other books on quality questioning. Sattes works out of Charleston, WV, with teachers and administrators across the country to improve questioning, teaching, and learning.
