Lesson 1 Ceres, Juno and Vesta are all asteroids. Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun. Jupiter is not a Terrestrial Planet. Our Moon travels around the Earth in 27.3 days. You would weigh about 1/6 of your Earth weight on the Moon. A constellation is a pattern of stars in the sky. Alpha Centuri is the nearest star system to ours. The closest galaxy is two million light years distant. Jules Verne wrote "From the Earth to the Moon?" Robert Goddard was the father of the modern liquid fueled rocket.

Lesson 2 Igneous rocks were formed by cooled magma. Metamorphic rocks were made from high temperatures and pressures. A seismograph measures Earth's vibrations. The fastest waves in the Earth are the P waves. Si O2 is the formula for Quartz. Sandstone, a sedimentary rock, consists of small particles of quartz. The zone or belt of magnetism around the Earth is named after Van Allen. Tectonic plates 'float' on the surface of the mantle. Europe and North America are separating at a rate of how1 cm per year? The boundary between the crust and the upper mantle is called the Moho.

Lesson 3 A gas cloud in space is called a nebula. Most gas out of a volcano is water vapor. The current atmosphere is made mostly out of Nitrogen gas. The troposphere is the zone where weather occurs. The highest clouds are called cirrus. The Amazon is the largest river on the Earth. Water falling to the surface of the Earth is called precipitation. The Labrador Current is an ocean current that is off the shores of Florida. The average temperature of the oceans in degrees is 59 F. Super cells are the systems that typically form tornados.

Lesson 4 In the Sun, Hydrogen is converted to Helium. The speed of light is about 186,000 miles a second. In 1999 about 19% of our energy needs were met through hydroelectric means. Iceland is famous for the amount of its needs met by geothermal sources. The US president known for his conservation efforts was Teddy Roosevelt. Gasoline is a fossil fuel. When burned, Sulfur, Nitrogen and Carbon form oxides. The build up of heat on the surface of a planet due to trapped IR radiation is called the

Greenhouse effect.

The conversion of Carbon Dioxide, water and energy to Oxygen is known as photosynthesis. Natural gas is a fossil fuel that has an estimated 600 year reserve.

Lesson 5 The first fuel that was used by man was wood. Wood, the first fuel, was replaced by charcoal. Oil was not used much before 1860. The first oil well in the United States was drilled in Pennsylvania. The Newton Meter is called a joule. In E = h v the h is known as Planck’s constant. The formula for gravitational potential energy is E = mgh. Ecology is the study of how animals and plants interact with their environment. Teddy Roosevelt was the President who created the system of national parks. In 2005, the Earth supported 6.5 billion people.
