English 4 Things to Remember

Lesson 1

Prehistoric Britain began in 5,000 B.C.

Roman Britain lasted from 100 - 410 B.C. to A.D.

Shakespeare wrote Macbeth in 1606.

Dickens was a major novelist during the Victorian era.

Literary historians say the name of the author of Beowulf is unknown.

The Odyssey and the Iliad were written by Homer.

The Globe Theatre dates back to 1599.

Mead was the equivalent of today’s beer.

The Norman Conquest took place in 1066 A.D.

Gothic fiction contains supernatural phenomena explicitly.

Lesson 2

Utterson, the protagonist, was a respectable, non-descriptive lawyer.

“The building is ‘sinister’ means that the building is evil.

Dr. Lanyon was upset with Dr. Jekyll over differences in scientific theory.

Dr. Jekyll initially refused to discuss Mr. Hyde, and then told him that he can rid himself of Mr. Hyde anytime he wanted.

A troglodyte is a pre-historic person who lived in caves and similar places.

In the incident of the letter, Mr. Guest said Dr. Jekyll’s handwriting was very similar to Mr. Hyde’s. Utterson then suspected Mr. Hyde of forgery.

Dr. Landon thought that Dr. Jekyll must have been insane.

Dr. Jekyll said, “…man is not truly one, but truly two.” He believed that one of his natures is essentially good, the other essentially evil.

Dr. Jekyll bought a house in Soho for Mr. Hyde, and prepared his will leaving all assets to Mr. Hyde.

Dr. Jekyll’s sad life ended when he ran out of the last of his powders.

Lesson 3

The witches, of “Weird Sisters” the first characters we see, planned to meet with Macbeth ‘when the battle’s lost and won.’

Duncan said to give the titles of the traitorous Thane of Cawdor to Macbeth.

Banquo worried that the witches told them ‘truths’ that will do them harm; we shall see that he is right.

When King Duncan said that his eldest son Malcolm was next in line to the throne, Macbeth said that he must “o’erleap this obstacle, meaning killing Malcolm.

Lady Macbeth believed that her husband was too soft to kill Duncan.

Malcolm and Donalbain fled to England and Ireland because they were afraid that they would be killed next.

Banquo believed that Macbeth killed Duncan to become king.

Macbeth decided to kill Macduff’s wife, son and everyone in his house.

The lords did not determine that Macbeth came to the throne through good deeds, and that Malcolm should be supported as King of Scotland.

Macbeth learned that Lady Macbeth committed suicide.

Lesson 4

Grendel killed 30 men that first night, then returned the next night.

The warriors’ swords had no effect on Grendel, who was protected by spells.

Beowulf, “the keen-souled kinsman of Hygelac”, had vowed earlier that he would defeat Grendel bare-handed.

As Wordsworth’s poem concludes, the ever-sinking Sun and tides do not suggested a strange thought of his lover’s death.

Wordsworth only wanted to enjoy the natural wonders of the world, rather than to live his life in a morally sound way.

The initial setting of “The Solitary Reaper” was a woman cutting grain in a field.

The last two lines of “The Solitary Reaper” take the poem out of the material world of nature and into the idealized world of memory.

In “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud”, a cloud drifting over the landscape took the poet out of the material world, making him more of an observer.

In “The World Is Too Much With Us: Late And Soon” Wordsworth complained that trying to make it in life makes us forget about the natural beauty of the world.

Lesson 5

William Wordsworth was the main poet of the Romantic period.

The Victorian era was from 1837-1901.

Queen Victoria was Britain’s longest reigning monarch.

The Norman Conquest in 1066 brought England closer to Europe

Macbeth took place in Scotland.

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde took place in London.

An iamb is a metrical foot of 2 syllables.

A sonnet contains 14 lines.

A soliloquy is a play in which a character does reveal his or her thoughts.

A poet laureate is the official poet for a government.
