Lesson 1 Synonyms are words with similar meanings.

Plot is an/the action, or sequence of events, in a story.

Theme is the main idea of a story.

When and where a story takes place is the setting.

Venn diagrams are graphic organizers used to compare/contrast.

Use the thesaurus to find synonyms.

The root is the part of a word that contains the main meaning.

A figure of speech compares two things indirectly is called a metaphor.

Webbing is a pre-writing technique where the writer groups similar ideas.

Writing is a process.

Lesson 2 Mini was 5 years old in the beginning of “The Cabulliwallah”.

Mini was energetic and talkative.

Mini and the Cabulliwallah got along well.

The Cabulliwallah was taken to his “father-in-law’s house”, which is a euphemism for jail.

The Cabulliwallah was gone for many years.

Mini and her father lost touch with the Cabulliwallah.

Mini was getting married at the end of the story.

The Cabulliwallah’s daughter was Pārbati.

Annoyed, upset or irritated, means vexed.

The word for a Muslim headdress is turban.

Lesson 3 The Cylops’ name was Polyphenus.

Poseidon was the son of Polyphemus.

Odysseus’ first mistake was not heeding the warning to leave Polyphemus’ cave and return to the ship.

Odysseus first outwitted Cyclops by getting him drunk.

Odysseus loses 6 men in the episode.

His boasting brought a curse from Polyphemus that eventually killed all of his men and kept Odysseus from returning home for many years.

The first thing that the Cyclops did when he returned was to kill and eat two of Odysseus’ men.

Pillaging is synonymous with looting, raiding and sacking.

Lighting is the same as illumining.

Lesson 4 Harriet’s Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl was both autobiographical and narrative.

Harriet was writing to people in the North.

Harriet was 14 years old when she was sold to Dr. Flint.

Harriet’s only protection was her grandmother.

Fear and pride kept Harriet from confiding in her grandmother.

Harriet couldn’t rely on the master’s wife for protection because the woman was jealous.

A biography is a book about one’s life written by someone else.

Dr. Flint was in his 50’s when he bought Harriet as a slave.

Beauty is a slave girl’s curse.

Harriet’s problems started when Dr. Flint began to whisper foul words in her ear.

Lesson 5 A satire is the ridicule of public institutions and figures.

Armistice Day was November 11, 1918.

Uncle James’ house was furnished in “heavy, solid, respectable mid-Victorian style”.

A dialogue is a conversation between characters.

Philip used a gun to make Uncle James listen.

His purpose for writing the book was to criticize the war.

At the conclusion of the play, Uncle James realized that he needed to be more careful about the way he treated others.

Milne’s point of view concerning war was generally critical.

Copyright law was passed by Congress.
