Worship Notes - August 25, 2013

INTRODUCTION Remember the sabbath day. Call the sabbath a delight. This is

the Lord's day, and the Lord will do for us what the Lord

does: feed us, forgive us, help and heal us. Rejoice at all the

wonderful things God is doing.

FIRST READING: Isaiah 58:9b-14

The Lord promises those who have returned from exile that

where justice and mercy prevail, the ruins will be rebuilt and

light will rise in the darkness. It is a day for new beginnings.

SECOND READING: Hebrews 12:18-29 Using images of Moses from the Old Testament, the writer

presents a striking vision of the new covenant of God made

possible in Christ. There is no longer fear; only awe in the

new promise in Christ into which we are invited.

GOSPEL: Luke 13:10-17

Jesus heals a woman on the sabbath, offering her a new be-

ginning for her life. When challenged by a narrow reading of

the sabbath command, Jesus responds by expanding "sabbath

work" to include setting people free from bondage.

PRELUDE

“Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty” (arr.Doran)

WORDS OF WELCOME & MINISTRY ANNOUNCEMENTS

CALL TO WORSHIP

The musical call to worship begins the service,

encouraging us to quietly prepare our hearts and

minds to receive the Word of God.

“Calming Waters” (Hartsell)

*CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS

Please stand as you are able and face the

baptismal font at the rear of the sanctuary.

All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked

at baptism, as the minister begins.

P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, † one God, abounding in steadfast love toward us, healing the sick and raising the dead, showering us with every good gift. C: Amen.

P: Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

Silence is kept for reflection.

P: Just and gracious God, C: we come to you for healing and life. Our sins hurt others and diminish us; we con-fess them to you. Our lives bear the scars of sin; we bring these also to you. Show us your mercy O God. Bind up our wounds, forgive us our sins, and free us to love, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.

P: The apostle Paul assures us: “When we were dead in our trespasses, God made us alive together with Christ, nailing the record of our sins to the cross.” Jesus says to you, † “Your sins are forgiven.” Be at peace, and tell everyone how much God has done for you. C: Amen.

Please turn and face forward for the opening hymn.

From the Brackens

Our heartfelt thanks for all the cards, calls, and prayers for us at this most difficult time. There is an Indian proverb that reads, “When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life in such a manner that when you die, the world cries and you rejoice.” We grieve and shed tears and now we rejoice with Brian with the knowledge that he is in the loving arms of our Savior. In Christ’s love,

Roger and Diane Bracken

Hip Hip Hooray! Sunday School Starts Rally Sunday!

The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting cooler, and the kids are back in school! That's great news for most of us parents after a long summer break. But you know what's even better - Sunday School is coming up - and fast!

And just as school builds a foundation for a life-time of learning, Sunday School helps build the foundation for a strong knowledge of Christ and his love for us. And we all want that for our chil-dren and all God's children. When we baptize our children, we as a congregation promise to help grow and guide these children in the Christian faith. It is in that spirit that we ask for your help - your help in spreading the news of God's love for them and being an example of His love.

How can you do this, you ask? It's so easy. Volunteer to teach a Sunday School Rota-tion. Rotations are 3 weeks long and we pro-vide the lesson and the materials. All you have to do is look over the lesson beforehand and come to Sunday School ready to have fun. Please sign up at the Sunday School table in the narthex. You can also register your children for Sunday School there. Even if they have at-tended Sunday School in the past, you still need to fill out registration for this year.

If you have any questions, please contact Kyle Pitts, Sunday School Director.Kyle’s email ad-dress is: [email protected]. Sunday

Sunday School participants will break off from the Rally Sunday service at the end of the service at 10:30A on Sept. 8. Then start-ing the following Sun-day (Sept. 15th), Sun-day School teachers and children will all meet in the Fellowship

“The Story” Bible Study

On September 16th, we will begin a nine-month, thirty-one session overview of the Bible at St. Philip. This study led by Pastor Nathan and Kevin Collins will be held on Monday evenings from 7-8:30pm. This

study will lead us into a deeper relationship with God through our reading and study of his Word.

There is still time for you to sign up. You can do so at the Adult Education table in the narthex, or by registering online on our website, www.stphilip-co.org, or by simply calling the church office at 303.979.4491 and saying, “Sign me up!”

Three books are available for purchase for use in this study. There is a Bible with selections from the New International Version that match up with the portions of scripture we will be studying throughout the year. (We have limited copies in the church office that can be pur-chased for $5.) Two additional books can be purchased as well; a participant’s guide ($10) and a support manual, “The Heart of the Story,” written by the author, Randy Frazee ($11). These books are also available in the church office. Checks should be made out to St. Philip Lutheran Church. Please indicate on the memo line that payment is for “The Story.”

Together we will look at the Bible as one con-tinuing story of God and his people. You don’t want to miss this opportunity to grow in faith!

New Cross for the Office Wall

Thanks, Jill and Greg Luer, for our newest cross for the Wall of Crosses in the church of-fice.

Jill and Greg recently visited Italy. On a visit to Il Duomo, the massive cathedral in Milan, Jill acquired a lovely little crucifix to add to our Wall of Crosses. Take a moment and come by to see it! And thank you, Jill and Greg, for thinking of us, and bringing this back to share.

Mary Austin, Woman of Distinction

St. Philip member Mary Austin was honored this past week at the annual luncheon of the Crohn’s/Colitis Foundation of America as their Woman of the Year. Mary works tirelessly and passionately to assist those who suffer from Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, especially children and their families. Mary has been in-strumental in making it possible for many chil-dren to attend Camp Oasis, a camp in Colo-rado set up for children with Crohn’s or colitis. Camp Oasis provides children with Crohn’s dis-ease and ulcerative colitis a safe and suppor-tive environment where they learn they are not alone, create new friendships with others who truly understand them, and gain confidence and independence.

Congratulations, Mary, on being Woman of the Year!

Lutheran World Relief is offering a wonderful opportunity for you to double your giving dol-lars. If you donate to Lutheran World Relief be-tween now and August 31, 2013, your gift will be doubled up to $171,000. LWR helps people around the world by supporting farmers and agriculture, responding to emergencies and disasters, enhancing water access and quality, and improving health and livelihood. Recently, in San Luis, Nicaragua, LWR built a new well and rehabilitated seven other wells so that peo-ple living there can now have clean drinking water and water for household gardens. There are three ways to donate: by mail to Lutheran World Relief at PO Box 17061, Baltimore, MD 21297-1061; by telephone, 1.800.597.5972; or by placing your donation in the offering plate with a designation that it is for Lutheran World Relief. Make your donation today, and your gift will be doubled!!

COMMUNITY CARE

Blood Donors Needed

Here’s an opportunity for you to contribute to the healing of young ones and perhaps saving a life, by donating a pint of blood at your church parking lot!

The Children’s Hospital blood mobile will be at St. Philip again on Friday, September 13th from 9am until 1pm. Our goal is again to drain a total of 32 pints of blood from our wonderful volun-teers. The sign-up sheet is at the Welcome Center kiosk, OR you can email or call Art Bar-ber or Bill or Susan Shepard to reserve your spot.

The need for blood at Children’s Hospital never ends, as young patients are treated for a vari-ety of short and long-term illnesses. A patient may require a series of blood transfusions over an extended period of time. A single pint of blood may be divided among two or more pa-tients. The bottom line is that whole blood is needed on a daily basis, and YOUR donation is important in meeting that need. Currently we still need 27 potential donors to sign up, so pick your time slot; we need you!

Not sure if you are eligible to donate? Contact Jennifer Barksdale, the Children’s Hospital Mobile Resource Coordinator at 720.777.5365.

You will have several opportunities to bid on any auction item; all auction items will be on display on Sunday, September 15, and the auction will continue until noon the day AFTER the tourna-ment.

You’ve seen the partial list of items already do-nated. Here are some more of the items which are being made available for the auction: • Handcrafted children’s rocking “moose” • 16” necklace and earring set • Holy Bible • Handcrafted assorted greeting cards • Pampered Chef basket • “Welcome Baby” basket • Framed art • “Family Game Night” basket • “Digital Photography” basket • Lots of great sports memorabilia— jerseys,

plaques, balls, and pucks all signed by sports greats

• And much, much more!!

If you have something to donate for the silent auction, please contact Linda Goodnough at 303.979.4491 or email her at [email protected]. And don’t forget to get your golf registrations in soon!

GOLF TOURNAMENT UPDATE

Help Us Stock the Wine Wall!

There will be a special addition to the golf tour-nament fundraiser this year, and it is something that everyone can contribute to and participate in! This year we will have our first Wine Wall!

What is a Wine Wall, you ask? It is like a raffle, except that EVERYONE who buys a ticket wins a bottle of wine! Here’s how it works: First, we build the wall of wine with wine donated by members of St. Philip. We need a total 50 bottles of wine, ranging in price from $10 to $40 per bottle. Be creative, be whimsi-cal, be generous - choose something you your-self would enjoy drinking or receiving as a gift. Bring your wine donations to the church office BEFORE September 1st and leave them with business administrator Linda Goodnough. Linda will be happy to give you a receipt for your donation, if desired.

All bottles will be wrapped in either white or red paper, according to the type of wine it is, and then placed in the wine rack.

Second, on September 15th, all the wines will be available for a donation of $20 per bottle. Pay $20, and you get a bottle of wine that you choose from the wall. Everyone is a winner!

Knowing that someone at St. Philip enjoyed that wine enough to donate it will be the fun part of the raffle. Knowing that you are giving to a great cause, St. Philip Lutheran Church, will be the BEST part.
