Worship Notes - April 20, 2014 Resurrection of Our Lord/Easter Day

INTRODUCTION: On this day the Lord has acted!

On the first day of the week God began creation,

transforming darkness into light. On this, the

"eighth day" of the week, Jesus Christ was raised

from the dead. We celebrate this new creation in the

waters of baptism and in the feast of victory. With

great joy we celebrate this day of days, even as we

begin the great fifty days of Easter. Filled with

hope, we go forth to share the news that Christ is

risen!

FIRST READING: Acts 10:34-43 Peter's sermon, delivered at the home of Cornelius,

a Roman army officer, sums up the essential mes-

sage of Christianity. Everyone who believes in Je-

sus, whose life, death, and resurrection fulfilled the

words of the prophets, receives forgiveness of sins

through his name.

SECOND READING: Colossians 3:1–4 Easter means new life for us as it first meant new

life for Christ. His resurrection reshapes the entire

focus and motivation for our lives, since we are now

hidden with the risen Christ in God.

GOSPEL: John 20:1–18 John's gospel describes the confusion and excite-

ment of the first Easter: the stone is moved, disciples

race back and forth, and angels speak to a weeping

woman. Then, Jesus himself appears.

Altar Flowers

The pulpit flowers were donated in loving memory of Bob Muthart by his devoted wife and family.

As is our tradition at St. Philip, the altar is adorned with lilies donated and dedicated by mem-bers of the congregation. See page 7 for dedications.

Please Be Courteous

Please silence all electronic devices when in the sanctuary. Thank you.

Thank You, Everyone!

Thank you to Jen Butts, for coordinating a fan-tastic Easter Egg Hunt on Palm Sunday, de-spite the yucky weather! We had lots of chil-dren participating; all together they collected 900 eggs and traded them for fun prizes and candy! Heartfelt thanks to all the helpers whose hard work made this a memorable event for the children of St. Philip.

EVANGELISM

Two Bits is Four Bites

When you place quarters in the offering plate, you are helping fight world hunger. All the quarter coins received at St. Philip are donated to the ELCA World Hunger Fund. That 25 cents translates into food and water for those in need all over the globe.

So, buddy, can you spare a quarter to help a hungry child?

IN REMEMBRANCE

A Remembrance of the School Shooting at

Columbine High School

April 20th marks the 15

th anniversary of

the school shooting at Columbine High School. Our hearts and prayers go out to all who bear the marks of suffering of that day. We pray for God’s peace. As Jesus bore the marks of the cross for us, we pray that the resurrected Christ will bring life out of death. The recent stabbing of students at Franklin Re-gional High School in Murrysville, PA, and the school shooting at Arapahoe High School in Littleton remind us that our world and our chil-dren continue to live with the vulnerability of violence in our daily lives. May the Risen Christ walk with us in our brokenness and guide us to live our lives in Him, knowing that in life and death we belong to Christ!

Food Bank Needs

The Community Care and Compassion Team has chosen a theme for each month as we col-lect items to donate to the local food banks.

April is rice and beans. Canned and dried beans, and all varieties of rice are needed. Please bring your donations to the church of-fice. Thank you!

Holy Hammers

The first Holy Hammers/Habitat for Humanity house of 2014 is underway at 201 E. 51st Street in the Globeville area of Denver. Five St. Philip volunteers worked on April 11

th framing

the first floor of a four-bedroom townhome unit two stories high with a full, unfinished base-ment. The recipient family are refugees from Iraq, headed by 22 year old Fahed Alaaed, a college student who also works at Echo Star. Also residing in the home will be his parents, who are in wheelchairs, as well as another brother and sister. The next volunteer work date for St. Philip will be Friday, May 30. A signup sheet is available at the Welcome Cen-ter kiosk.

Upcoming Family Promise Rotation May 11-18, 2014

Sign-up sheets are now available at the Family Promise table in the narthex. During our Family Promise rotation volunteers are needed to pro-vide services in support of the homeless fami-lies that we will be helping that week. Among the many volunteer jobs are: set up, take down, provide supplies, food preparation, van driving, evening hosting, and overnight hosting. Check out our sign-up in the narthex, or call Bob Delong at 303.973.3996.

Volunteer Opportunity: Family Promise Food Coordinator

We want to thank Kendra Dolif and her family for their years of dedicated service as our Family Promise Food Coordinator. Although Kendra is resigning her posi-

tion as Food coordinator, she will continue to serve on the food team.

We now have an opening for a Family Promise Food Coordinator. Duties include: preparing menus for the homeless family guests who visit St. Philip for a week 5 times a year, and work-ing with our food team volunteers to serve the food and assist with cleanup during each rota-tion. Please contact Bob Delong at 303.973.3996 if you have an interest.
