Introducing The Faith5

Would you like to improve communication in your family? Do you want your family to seek God’s wisdom together? Do you desire your family to grow closer to God and to each other? The FAITH5™ program may be for you! FAITH5™ (Faith Acts In The Home) equips families to incorpo-rate faith practices in the home as part of their daily routine. Through the five simple steps of shar-ing, reading, talking, praying, and blessing one another, FAITH5™ seeks to strengthen families and enrich the church.

St. Philip is forming a “dream team” of families with children of all ages to try out the program to-gether, to commit to incorporating the FAITH5™ practices at home for six weeks, and to walk with other families as they do the same. The families will gather for food, learning, and sharing once a week for six weeks, beginning with an introduction on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 5 pm. On each of the fol-lowing Sunday evenings, through March 16, we will cover one of the five FAITH5™ steps: sharing, reading, talking, praying, and blessing.

Worship Notes - January 26, 2014

INTRODUCTION: Jesus begins his public ministry by

calling fishers to leave their nets and follow him. In Je-

sus the kingdom of God has come near. We who have

walked in darkness have seen a great light. We see this

light most profoundly in the cross—as God suffers with

us and all who are oppressed by sickness, sin, or evil.

Light dawns for us as we gather around the word, the

font, and the holy table. We are then sent to share the

good news that others may be "caught" in the net of

God's grace and mercy.

FIRST READING: Isaiah 9:1–4

The northern tribes of Zebulun and Naphtali experienced

defeat, but they are assured that their condition will be

reversed when God makes a light-filled appearance. The

joy they will experience will resemble celebrations of

great harvests, because God will deliver them from eve-

rything that diminishes or oppresses them. The people in

the northern parts of Israel have experienced "gloom"

and "darkness" because of the destruction wrought by

Assyrian military forces. To these people, the prophet

announces the shining of a great light of salvation.

PSALM: Psalm 27:1, 4–9

SECOND READING: 1 Corinthians 1:10–18

Paul calls on the Corinthians to end their dissensions

and share the unified outlook of the gospel. Discord

arises when we forget that we belong not to human lead-

ers or institutions but to Christ who was crucified for us.

Indeed, the unifying word of the cross of Christ is the

center of the gospel and the power of God's salvation.

GOSPEL: Matthew 4:12–23

Jesus begins his public ministry shortly after John the

Baptist is imprisoned by Herod. He proclaims the near-

ness of God's reign and calls four fishermen to be his

first disciples. ����

Looking Ahead to Lent

The season of Lent begins with Ash Wednes-day, on March 5, 2014. During the season of Lent, St. Philip will have mid-week Lenten wor-ship services, preceded by Bread & Broth sup-pers. Bread & Broth begins at 6pm; Lenten worship at 7pm.

Holy Week begins with Palm/Passion Sunday on April 13. Maundy Thursday is April 17, fol-lowed by Good Friday, and the Vigil of Easter. Easter Sunday, the Resurrection of Our Lord, is April 20, 2014. ����

Come, Share Your Stories!

We are looking for people who are willing to share their personal stories with our confirma-tion youth on Wednesday evenings at 6:30pm. We have a different topic every week and we would like to have people from the congrega-tion come and share their stories that relate to the topic of the week. We are now discussing the Ten Commandments.

January 29th: The Third Commandment: Remember the Sabbath day, and keep it holy. Do you have a story from your life about keeping the Sabbath day? Or how about a story about communication and how important communication is with people and with God, since communication helps to deepen and grow our relationship with God. Maybe you have a story about good or poor communica-tion in a friendship or your marriage?

February 4th: The Fourth Commandment: Honor your father and your mother. Do you have a story from your life about a time you dis-obeyed, dishonored or hurt your parents? What happened as a result? Why did you do it? Did anyone get hurt as a result of your actions? Feel free to be honest, humble, and clear in your sharing. Or do you have a story from your own parenting experiences that you can share?

Youth in high school, this is for YOU! Senior High Youth Group is a place for youth to get together, hang out, play games and have a short devotion. Souper Bowl Sunday

On Sunday, February 2nd, our youth will be en-couraging YOU to show your spirit of giving as they participate in the 2014 Souper Bowl of Caring. The youth will be stationed in the nar-thex after worship with giant soup kettles. You are encouraged to show us your spirit of giving by making a cash donation. The money col-lected will be donated to various local groups that help fight hunger in our community.

Members of St. Philip, this is your chance to be a champion off the field! Help our youth fill their kettles with cash, and our Souper Bowl of Car-ing boxes with soup. The need for food contin-ues in our community.

Upcoming Blood Drive

Mark your calendars! On Fri-day, March 28th, the Chil-dren’s Hospital Blood Mobile

will visit St. Philip. The goal is to collect 32 pints of whole blood for the care and cure of the young ones at Children’s Hospital.

Important to remember: A donor is eligible when at least 56 days have lapsed since your last donation. The 56 days is critical for allow-ing you to replenish your body’s blood supply. That means that January 31st is a critical date if you wish to be eligible to donate on March 28th.

Signup sheets for the March 28th visit will ap-pear in the narthex in February. Stay well, save your blood, and please donate in March! ����

Father & Son Dinner

St. Philip’s annual Father & Son Dinner will be held on Sunday, February 23 in the fellowship hall. Festivities begin at 5pm with a delicious four-course spaghetti and meatball din-ner from Angie’s restaurant. There will be drawings for a variety of door prizes for both boys and men. Our entertainment will be “A Wild and Crazy Comedy Show” presented by the famous Jackman Brothers. It’s high quality entertainment filled with laughter and excite-ment! Cribbage Tournament A Success!

On Saturday, January 11th, a large group of cribbage enthu-siasts converged at St. Philip to compete in the first crib-bage fundraiser tournament of 2014. Organizer John Breed is happy to report that over $500 was raised to help send our high school youth on their mission trip to Anapra Mexico in summer 2014.

Music Workshop for Singers

The Lutheran Chorale is offering their annual FREE music workshop on Saturday, February 8, 2014. All singers are welcome.

Workshop: The Chorale and guest singers will learn Lee Holdridge’s ‘Hymns Triumphant Part I,’ a won-derful arrangement that includes 42 favorite hymns.

The workshop will begin at 9am with registra-tion and breakfast. Singers will work primarily on the Holdridge arrangement, with breakout sessions during the day focusing on breathing, voice training, and the aging voice, to name a few. A free lunch will also be served.

Performance: On Sunday, February 9th, all are invited to join the singers for a performance at 3pm at St. Philip Lutheran Church. The concert is FREE, but a goodwill offering will be taken to be given to a non-profit organization. ����

You have been a gift to our congregation and we wish you well in all that you have planned in your future!

On Sunday, February 2nd, at both of our morn-ing worship services, we will have the opportu-nity to publicly thank Sue for her service to our congregation. We will do so at the end of the 8:00 a.m. service and the beginning of the 10:45 a.m. service. We will also host a recep-tion in her honor from 9:00 – 9:30 a.m. in the narthex. Please join us in thanking Sue for a job well-done!

Thankfully, we are not completely saying “good-bye” to Sue and the gifts she brings. Through conversation with the personnel com-mittee of our congregation, we have decided to split the duties Sue was doing as our parish secretary into two part-time positions. Sue will continue to work part-time remotely as the edi-tor of our Happenings and the publisher of our worship slides. This will allow us to cut down the hours for the secretary/receptionist position to 22 and ½ hours per week (9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday – Thursday). The personnel committee is currently in the process of filling this secretary/receptionist position.
