FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

St. George, Pray

for Us!

Isaiah 63:16b-17, 19b 64:2-7; 1 Corinthians 1:3-9 Mark 13:33-37

Be aware of your surroundings. Look where you’re going. Think before you speak. Remember to breathe. Be here now. Pithy reminders to be mindful have been sprinkled into the popular diet for so long, they tend to join the background noise we train ourselves to ignore. Too bad: Mindfulness isn’t just for monks and yoga fans. Jesus invites us to live in watchful awareness of our times, ready to respond in any given situation. Practice be-ing present to every person and each hour today. Where is the Spirit drawing you this Advent season? ~Prepare the Word

Stewardship Reflection ~ December 3

“Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time will come.” - MARK 13:33

We all take things for granted. In particular, we take time for granted. Our lives are so busy, many of us are planning our time - our days, weeks, months, even years in advance. Remember, our time on earth is a gift. None of us knows how long we will be here. Start today and begin thanking God for each and every day. Take time in silence, every day, and listen to what God is saying to you.

The Adoration Chapel of St. George needs more committed adorers. There are currently 4 open hours

that must be filled. We could always use more adorers at all times.

Wednesday: 1:00am Thursday: 10:00am

Saturday: 2:00am, 5:00pm

Call Olga Leonard at 351-3853 or Kay Brillhart 631-3679, if you can commit to

these or any other hour. Thank you!

THE INNER WORD

What’s in your heart? As Advent begins, moments of inner preparation are important. Give yourself enough undistracted time to focus on how these Advent readings speak to your heart. Light a candle (perhaps the Advent wreath). Close your eyes and breathe deeply, three breaths. Feel your feet on the floor. Be aware of your bodily presence. Now reflect on these questions.

• How am I distracted rather than alert? What’s standing in my way? How have I wandered from God’s ways?

• There is a sense of imminent change in the words of Isaiah and in the warnings of Jesus. Where do I feel the urgency to change in my own life right now?

• Do I feel that God’s face is hidden from me late-ly?

• Am I willing to let God be the potter, shaping my life? How do I react to that image? I may believe in God, but do I trust God?

• What, spiritually, am I waiting for? Watching for? What practices help me be alert and watchful? What habits work against that?

ADULT EDUCATION Our sessions are on Thursday mornings at 9:00am in the Michler Room of the Huhn Center. All are welcome For more information call Deacon Jim Murphy at 752-5358.

St. Nicholas Feast Day, December 6

OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE

From the Pastor:

Welcome to the First Sunday of Advent. With a new liturgical year comes the invitation to enter more deeply into the transforming power of the Paschal Mystery, the dying and rising of Jesus. The first two weeks of Advent direct our attention to the Second Coming of Christ at the end of time and the last two weeks focuses us on the first coming of the Christ-child in Bethlehem of Judea.

Let me encourage you to attend daily Mass as a way to prepare spiritually for the celebration of the Nativity of our God on December 25. Untold benefits come to those who make that kind of sacrifice at the beginning of the day for God. A daily Mass schedule is available on the cover of the bulletin. The Sacrament of Confession is another wonderful way to begin a new liturgical year and prepare for the Feast of Incarnation. Confessors are available weekly on Saturday afternoon in church at 3:00pm. We plan to have a communal penance service on Thursday, December 14 at 7pm at St. George.

Other opportunities to deepen your relationship with Jesus this Advent include time spent in Adoration at the perpetual adoration chapel of St. George. Ladies from both parishes are welcome to attend Advent by Candlelight this Sunday at St. Dominic Savio, starting at 6:30pm. An inspiration study of the Gospel of St. Mark is being presented on Monday evenings in the Huhn Center. Come to one session or attend the last three.

Every first and third Saturday morning at 9am, Centering prayer is offered in the chapel in the Huhn Center. The Pro-Life Committee is leading the Night of Prayer for Life on December 7. This year it will take place at St. George. Advent Vespers begins every evening at 6:30pm in St. Dominic Savio church from December 17 to December 23. We will pray together the traditional divine office (Vespers) as another way to listen to God’s Word and prepare for the divine Gift that is to come.

Mary, the Mother of God, was specially prepared for her vocation when God created her without the stain of original sin. The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception will be observed as a Holy Day of Obligation on December 8. Masses are as posted below.

I am grateful that so many of you have been engaged in the parish planning process, difficult as this is. I am also thankful to the Vision Team leaders and to the committee members working out various parts of a plan. We continue to receive valuable survey feedback. Based on the feedback we have gotten, we are aware that SDS church holds a dear place in the hearts of the parishioners. After prayerful reflection, we have decided that active parishioners should be able to celebrate weddings and funerals in the St. Dominic Savio church. Working together in faith, hope, and charity, we can build a brighter future with the help of the Holy Spirit. Come Lord Jesus, Come! Fr. Paul J. Rothschild

Marriage & More The Marriage & More program consists of small groups of married couples who gather monthly to explore ways to practice the Sacrament of Matrimony in today’s world. We consider also the challenges of raising children and relating to adult children and grandchildren, plus other family issues. There are currently five groups (five to seven couples) who gather monthly in one another’s homes and are considering the formation of a sixth group. To this end we have scheduled an information night on Monday, Dec. 4th at 6:30pm in the Michler room. We welcome all St. George and St. Dominic couples no matter how long they have been married. We currently have newly-weds to golden jubilarians. No commitment will be requested at this meeting. For more information please call George & Katrina Herrera at 314-399-4282.

National Night of Prayer for Life Friday, December 8, 2017 ` St. George Church

Hourly Adoration at 9:00 PM with Rosary, Divine Mercy Chaplet, Prayer to St. Michael and private meditation. Confession 10:45 PM, Benediction 11:45 PM, Holy Mass at Midnight.

Just as Jesus became man at His conception, likewise when a child is conceived, he or she becomes one of the human family and dwells among us. So that our nation and world may accept this truth come pray with us, to seek God’s mercy and to restore a respect for Life and Liberty in America.

All are invited to participate! For those unable to attend in church, please join us in prayer at home, especially during the Hour of Unity, if possible.

It was on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (then celebrated on December 9th) that Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas and the unborn, first appeared to St. Juan Diego in Mexico. This National Night of Prayer for Life joins these two days to honor Our Blessed Mother and ask her intercession to establish a culture of life, to protect the Church from persecution and to receive God’s grace to revive our land.

National Hour of Unity: 11 PM to Midnight CST. Join us in prayer with others throughout America in Cathedrals, Churches and Chapels to end abortion and to restore God's blessings of Life and Religious Liberty in America.
