33RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

St. George, Pray

for Us!

Proverbs 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31 1 Thessalonians 5:1-6 Matthew 25:14-30

Three servants are entrusted with their master’s “talents”; the one who fearfully buries his is reprimanded while those who grow theirs earn the “master’s happiness” and trust. Today we take the hint. We try to share the gifts God gives us. But earliest versions of the parable repeat the phrase “to hand over,” meaning the transmission of religious tradition. And so perhaps it’s time to review our portfolio. Is our Catholic heritage a buried treasure, or do we pull it from our pocket regularly? Has our participation in the Eucharist collected dust, like a keepsake of First Communion, or has it grown into a larger way of life? ~Prepare the Word

Stewardship Reflection ~ November 19 “Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you have been faithful in small matters, I will give

you great responsibilities.”- MATTHEW 25:21

God expects us to nurture and develop the gifts He has given us and then generously return a portion with increase. He doesn’t want us to waste or hoard the gifts He has given us; He expects us to grow our gifts, use them wisely and be generous with them. Unfortunately, many of us are not generous in proportion to all that God has given us.

The Adoration Chapel of St. George needs more committed adorers. There are currently 4 open hours

that must be filled. We could always use more adorers at all times.

Wednesday: 1:00am Thursday: 10:00am

Saturday: 2:00am, 5:00pm

Call Olga Leonard at 351-3853 or Kay Brillhart 631-3679, if you can commit to

these or any other hour. Thank you!

The Parish Office will be closed on Thursday, November 23rd and will reopen on Monday,

November 27th at 8:30am.

THE INNER WORD

What’s in your heart? Trusting God comes easy for those who do it often and prepares them for the most difficult times. • How able am I to trust God and follow the divine

commands set before me? • What are the outcomes when I try to control or

manipulate a situation? What can I do to be more trusting that all shall be well without my interference?

• What are my greatest fears? Do I have the courage or desire to let God help me through them?

ADULT EDUCATION Our sessions are on Thursday mornings at 9:00am in the Michler Room of the Huhn Center. All are welcome For more information call Deacon Jim Murphy at 752-5358.

Birthright Christmas Cards

Cards will be sold at all Masses November 19th & 26th.

A huge Thank You from the Prolife Committee for your donations to the

baby shower event for birthright.

33RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

From Fr. Rothschild:

“When you sit down to eat, pray. When you eat bread, do so thanking Him for being so generous to you. If you drink wine, be mindful of Him who has given it to you for your pleasure and as a relief in sickness. When you dress, thank Him for His kindness in providing you with clothes. When you look at the sky and the beauty of the stars, throw yourself at God’s feet and adore Him who in His wisdom has arranged things in this way. Similarly, when the sun goes down and when it rises, when you are asleep or awake, give thanks to God, who created and arranged all things for your benefit, to have you know, love and praise their Creator.” + St. Basil the Great, from Homily V. In martyrem Julittam

As Thanksgiving Day approaches, I want to encourage everyone to join us that day for the 9AM Mass. Bring some canned goods and any monetary offerings to Mass at St. George for use by the St. Vincent de Paul Association. The SVdP society do a tremendous job of caring for the poor and needy in our area.

When Jesus healed ten lepers only one returned to say, “Thank you.” He was a Samaritan. One, out of ten who received a whole new lease on life, said thanks. But if we only go that far in understanding the teaching of Jesus on thanksgiving we miss His larger point. I am to be grateful for all of life, not just the parts that are pleasing to me. That takes real courage, and deep faith. Thankful for all of life? The good and the bad, the sweet and the sour, the delightful and the depressing, when I get what I prayed for and when I don’t get what I prayed for, when someone is recognized and I am forgotten, when I get what I want and when I don’t get what I want? Yes. Thankful for all of life.

“Kindle your gratitude,” writes St. Francis de Sales in his famous manual on the spiritual life, Introduction to the Devout Life. St. Francis says, “First, reflect on all the gifts we have received, but then to go even further by meditating on the fact that all the circumstances of life provide us with the opportunities we need for spiritual progress,” the good and the bad. Paradoxically, I have grown more spiritually as a result of the things I have suffered in life than from the blessings.

St. Basil the Great and St. Francis de Sales have a lot to teach us as we go through a season of discernment and transition. If you are in sadness, God is in your sadness. If you are anxious, God is in your anxiety. If you are angry, God is in your anger. If you are afflicted or lost, God is in your affliction and bewilderment. You are not alone. God is not apart from you. He is at work in you, wherever you are at. What does God want from us spiritually is the question? He wants what He has wanted from every age? Faith, Surrender, Hope, Trust, Humility, Charity, Sacrifice, Obedience, Unity.

God is up to something. It tastes sour right now, but He is asking the people of St. George and St. Dominic to let go and trust what He is up to. It feels like crucifixion, because we are so out of control, but it will lead to Life, not because the plan is any good, but because God is asking His people to let go and trust in Him during a time of uncertainty. If you do, your faith will grow exponentially. Take matters into your own hands and …. At Mass, place your fears, your sadness, your grief, your doubts, your need to control, your self-will on the paten and into the chalice and Jesus will consecrated and transformed it with the bread and wine and you will enter the dying and rising of Jesus.

Know that you are appreciated, loved, and prayed for daily,

NOVEMBER 19TH, 2017

VISIONING TEAM UPDATE: The following are summaries of the information provided by the 6 parish planning committees during the two meetings on Nov. 11th and Nov. 14th. For more detailed information, please visit the parish vision updates section accessible from both parish websites.

Facilities The committee is still looking into all the available space between the two campuses but was able to provide the following updates: • Based on a recent traffic study, St. Louis County does not seem willing to close Heege Rd.

• The committee suggested enhancing the accessibility to St. George church by adding a ramp along Heege Rd. instead of Gravois. It would cost $50-$70k, but there are still additional issues to resolve.

• Updating the sound system inside St. George will cost $60k to upgrade.

• The St. George Fields are currently under contract by a developer who hopes to build a retirement facility there. It is cost prohibitive for the parish to try to purchase the land.

• The Affton Christian Food Pantry will be requesting more space in the near future.

• The Head Start program lease ($112k revenue per year) expires in July of 2018 and Fr. Rothschild is discussing renewing the lease with them.

• The agreement for leasing the convent ($72k revenue per year) expires in 2020.

Finance The finance subcommittee members have been working with the accountant for the parish from the Archdiocese of St. Louis and developed a “trial budget” for the combined parish. The assumptions behind the budget are conservative with regard to revenues and liberal with regard to expenses. There is no way to calculate the number of parishioners who might migrate to another parish nor is there a way to estimate the number of people we might attract. We continue the budget analysis and are fine-tuning what a budget for both parishes might look like realistically.

Community Life / Welcoming / Hospitality The committee thinks that we have two vibrant parishes with a lot going on so instead of creating something completely new they are recommending that we support the current upcoming events for the next 4 months. They propose creating a monthly potluck dinner in the spring, as well as a Parish Ministries Fair. Some ideas put forth for Hospitality include: phone calls to invite new parishioners to events, everyone wearing name tags, welcoming new people in the pews, and possibly praying the Rosary before Mass.

Worship The committee hopes to create Easter-quality liturgy throughout the entire year. The four aspects of worship that they feel will be key to vibrant liturgy are: engaging and inspirational music at all Masses, effective hospitality, preaching that feeds and forms, and intentional launch into deeper community. Proposed Mass schedules are currently: 4:30 PM (Sat.), 7AM, 9AM, 11AM (Sun.), though they are considering the possibility of eliminating one of the Sunday Masses. They also suggest having one of the Masses be oriented towards Youth/Young Adults musically and have them participate in the ministries.

Service to the Poor / Outreach The committee is proposing that outreach activities that involve grade school children remain at the SDS campus and occasional transportation to STG for other service opportunities. Make use of the facilities that best fit the corresponding activity instead of moving everything over to STG. The committee has created an inventory of combined outreach activities in both parishes and moving forward will determine how to reach the different groups needing help, who is being served, and service opportunities.

Life-Long Faith Formation The committee recognizes that our young people are the future of our Church and the ideal faith formation programs will help make the Church the main priority in family life. The committee will ensure that programs are available on both campuses. They propose first focusing on enriching current parishioners before proactively reaching out. All topics will be organized within three areas: Knowing the Faith, Living the Faith, or Building Faith Community. The committee will discuss what schedules work best to reach the most people, how to handle the space needed for programs connected to Sunday Masses at St. George, and whether members of SDS and STG will be willing to attend programs at both campuses and what confusion this may cause.
