Art elements used in this project:

In this project we will be discussing Composition and Shape.

Collage is a piece of art work that is created by cutting and tearing paper

Using basic shapes, like ovals for heads this collage activity shows how just a

few shapes and elements can come together to make a portrait. Students can

play with shape and colour to create a true Selfie portrait.

Starter:

Teaching Aids

Look at the Teaching Aids and consider everyone’s individuality – shape of head, eyes, ears, hair, nose, lips, smile, clothing …. We should consider and celebrate the differences that makes us each unique. Do you want to choose realistic features or be wild – this might be the only time you will get to

dye your hair

Shapes

Look at the Artzone teaching aids. Break the picture in to the shapes you can see in the face, neck, clothing, head and hair.

Method:

Stage 1

Pick a skin colour A4 page (If you don’t have a colour

page – just paint or colour a white page). Set it to

portrait.

Draw lightly an oval head shape making sure to fill the

sheet but leaving space for the hair above and neck

below in the bottom quarter of the page.

Put your hands behind your ears and feel where your

neck starts (behind your ears). Feel how wide your neck

is and how it curves into your shoulders (wide enough to

support your heavy head )

Draw in a neck shape also

Once drawn take a black marker and draw very carefully

over all your pencil lines.

Stage 2

Cut carefully around the outline of your head and neck

shape.

Stage 3

Choose an A4 white/yellow/brown or black sheet (any

colour) of paper for your hair. Set it to Landscape.

Lay the page behind your oval head and neck shape

Draw very lightly around your head shape to give you a

platform for your hair design

Design a head of hair with pencil - use simple block

shapes. Look back at the Artzone Teaching Aids for

inspiration

Use a marker to go over all the pencil lines you have

drawn for your hair.

Use you scissors to cut out the hair, working closely

around the outline only.

Stage 4

Choose an A3 coloured background page (or 2 A4 sheets

taped together). Paint or colour your sheet if you only

have white.

Use a ruler to outline your working area of the A3

background page. Trim one ruler width (3cm) from the

top, left and right hand side of the page. Trim two ruler

widths (6cm) from the bottom of your page. Cut this out

Stage 5 Lets look at our composition!

Place the head and neck on the background. Remember

to leave space for the t-shirt at the bottom of the sheet.

Place the hair on top of the head.

DO NOT STICK ANYTHING DOWN YET

Stage 6 The shoulders and t-shirt

Place a piece of A5 coloured paper over the neck area and

measure out the shape of the shoulders / t-shirt.

Feel your shoulders and draw the hill shape of your

shoulders on the new page. Outline it again in marker.

Cut it out.

Add details like a collar or emblem if they wish. Check

how the t-shirt will fit with your head and neck shapes.

Remember to leave some of the neck showing. Trim it if

necessary.

Now start to paste down your shapes. Use a small amount

of glue around the outline of the back of head. Spread the

glue and stick down your head.

Next glue and stick down the hair.

Then glue down your t-shirt shape aligned to the bottom

of the background page. Again trim if necessary.

Consider the dimensions of the head at this stage and

prepare for the placement of eyes, ears, nose and

mouth …

Your eye is a small oval shape. It is important to get the

size, space between your eyes and placement of the eyes

right for our artwork.

Stage 5 Face Features - The Eyes

Draw an oval eye shape on a folded piece of white paper.

Outline the eye shape on both sides of the paper in black

marker. Cut out the shape to give you two eyes.

What colour are your eyes? Fold a small piece of eye

colour paper in half. Draw a smaller round iris shaped

circle. Outline the irises with black market. Cut this out

to give you two irises.

Stick the irises onto the white eyes

Use your black marker to draw in black pupils.

Consider the position of your eyes in relation to your

face, hair and neck.

Place and stick your eyes down.

Stage 7

Use left over skin colour paper to draw two semi-circle

ears. Again, look at the Artzone Head Guide and stick

your ears behind you hear and hair.

Draw in your nose outline with pencil. Highlight gently

with market if required

Stage 8

Consider the shape and positioning of the mouth and lips

1. Draw on mouth and lips

Or

2. Draw a flat ‘m’ shape line (like a flying bird) for the top

lip. Draw curved line up to meet the edge of your top

lip. This will create a bottom lip. Cut this out and stick

it down on the face.

Remember your mouth is the same width as the length of

your lips

Take an A3 piece of black paper use it as a frame for your

artwork. (you can use any colour or white if you don’t

have black)

Stick your artwork onto the top ¾ of the frame leaving

room for your #tag at the bottom

Stage 11 - Lettering – look at the teaching aids (above).

Use a ruler to mark out 2 lines on your page that your

letters should fit between

Options:

- USE BLOCK CAPITALS to draw out your name, tag or

motto (we used ‘#NAME’, ‘#ART’ or ‘#CREATE’). Try

keep it short. or

- Print the Letter Templates below and cut out the

letters to make up your #. or

- Print Template 4 with the pre-cooked #ART or

#CREATE

Stage 12

Cut out the letters and place on the bottom of the page

For the hashtag you can simply cut out for strips of paper

and lay them across each other and glue them down

Or

Print and cut out the # from the templates below

Stage 13

Glue down the lettering

Outline any details of the face, head or t-shirt in marker

that you may have missed.

Consider adding details like a hat or background or earring

….
