Greetings From Your Chapter Directors
Tom & Colleen FitzGerald
GWRRA NC-A “Piedmont Goldwings”
Well another month has come and gone. Ever notice the older we get, the faster time flies? We did some riding this month and I never get over the wonderful feeling that riding a
bike in the wind gives me. Unfortunately the fall I suffered in May has resulted in some damage to the tendons and ligaments in my left wrist. Consequently I’m wearing a wrist brace for the foreseeable future and if it doesn’t get better in 6-8 weeks may be facing sur-gery. The old adage “getting old isn’t for sissies” is certainly true. I’ll be back on the bike as soon as possible. On another note, Colleen and I have purchased a home in Davidson County with a Winston-Salem address. We’ve been wanting to downsize for quite a while as a 10 room 3850 square foot house is more than we need. We’ll continue to run our computer business out of Kernersville and our affiliation with Chapter A. It won’t be long before it will be time to saddle up and head for Wings Over the Smokies. If you haven’t already registered, I strongly suggest you do. Having worked on the District Team for 6 years, I can tell you that early registration really helps the District with planning and setting everything up. They’re volunteers just like chapter staff and if we can help make their work easier, let’s all do so. Get those registrations in. We’ll be attending Wing Ding in Knoxville for the 3rd time since becoming members and hope many of you will take advantage of the opportunity to attend the national rally as well. When riding this time of year, keep in mind that batteries are more apt to have trouble in the extreme heat and so are our bodies. Hydrate frequently and consider getting a cool vest to help keep your core body temperature in a safe range. Until next month, safe and frequent riding to you all. Ride Safe. Summer is here! Now the warm weather we've been experiencing is appropriate. We can enjoy riding, with an occasional pop-up thunderstorm, as usual.
This brings to mind appropriate safe riding gear for this warmer weather. Mesh riding gear with some CE body armor will provide comfort, keeping us safer but still allowing ventilation to keep us cooler.
A good rain suit will be essential gear, but some materials can be very hot. Some rain suits, such as Frogg Toggs, are made of light weight materials that "breathe" to resist rain and avoid condensation that turns some rain suits into "sauna suits".
We will need to be alert to signs of heat exhaustion or even heat stroke in ourselves and our riding
companions. Being well hydrated and maintaining electrolytes is important, as we sweat to cool our-selves.
If you notice signs of overheating,, you stop sweating, feel very hot, become confused, experience headache or nausea, stop in an area where you can get into the shade, get in air conditioning if pos-sible, drink fluids (water, sports drinks with electrolytes) and use ice or cold water in towels to help cool down.
Group riding has many benefits, camaraderie, increased visibility, assistance if there's a problem, and enhanced safety. On the flip side, if a rider is impaired, such as by heat exhaustion, or has poor skills, or has a bad attitude and is uncooperative, the safety of other riders in the group is at risk.
As riders, we are responsible for our safety and the safety of our passengers. If you observe any of the above issues in a group ride, number one, stay away from the erratic rider, number two, notify the rider leader. For a health impairment, it is important to help that person as soon as possible. For skills or other issues, counseling should help.
For your safety, you always have the option to ride separately. If you do not feel comfortable riding with a group, you can meet up at the destination -- and ride your own ride, safely.
This is more likely to happen with large charity or memorial rides which involve many riders who are unaccustomed to group riding.
We have the benefit of GWRRA group riding training and procedures, skill enhancement training, and riding with safety-conscious friends.
Remember to reinforce safety commitment by participating in the Rider Safety Levels Program, no
cost to apply, and a real benefit for your knowledge and safety.
Join us on our Friday dinner ride this month for an enjoyable social din-ner. Watch for impromptu ride notifications, and see you at our gathering!
Next month, we’ll address some group riding considerations.
Let’s ride in 2018 – with a commitment to safe and enjoyable riding! Paula, Ride Coordinator

HAVING FUN Greetings, Lots of fun!! Have you had fun lately??? Charles and I went fish-ing….no fish….but lots of fun!! Then on to the Tennessee Rally. We had tons of fun there. I had a Deacons Meeting at church when we got home and they are always good. We learn how to better serve others and that sounds just like GWRRA…………SERVING OTHERS!!! Speaking of serving others, Blessing of the Bikes was a day of serving others. Pastor Preston prayed over every person and mo-torcycle that attended. It was such a beautiful example of a loving chap-ter, Rocky Mount Z, extending their blessing to all others. Thank you to all chapters that are from the East,
Central, and West for your attend-ance. Now to tell you about more fun. Our most recent rally was the South Carolina Rally. I really wish all of you could have visited the Newber-ry Opera House and it is a wonder-ful venue for the rally. Walking down the old brick streets and tour-ing the little quaint shops was very interesting. We even got to attend a jazz concert presented by The Big Jazz Band, it was fabulous!! The best part is, if you did not get to go this year, it will be in Newberry next year. We also had a great rep-resentation from North Carolina!!! Again, a big thank you goes out to all of the MECs and Chapter Cou-ples. You are doing a fantastic job in your position. Next in line for fun is the Hill-billy Hoedown. Everyone always looks forward to a refreshing time
of friendship. The first year that Charles and I attended, he played joker marbles for 2 days. Ruined him to the bone!! Always, great memories are made and more mem-ories are to be made. Looking for-ward to seeing you there and having fun!!! Love you all, Charles and Sue Langley District MEPC

Can you believe that we are al-ready in the 6th month of the year? What happened to January, it seems that was just last month. Time is moving really fast and be-fore you know it, Wings Over The Smokies® will be here. All the District Team are getting ready, making plans so each of you can have fun. Moving around and about North Carolina, it looks and sounds that the grand prize tickets are selling. Thank you for your help in selling the Gold Wing Tick-ets. Cindy and I along with the District Team have been to several other Districts to promote NC W.O.T.S. and we hear that many are planning to come. Getting peo-ple to come to the rally is like get-ting people to come to your chapter gathering. If you visit them, they will visit you. Lets all get out and have fun. The next District rallies we plan to attend are VA’s Rally In The Valley June 28-30 and the
Kentucky Blast August 16-18. There are more available, so jump on that machine and go. The next NC event is the Cou-ples’ Retreat June 23 at the Mebane Arts Center. This event is for the NC Couples to meet and great each other, have some fun honoring just the couples and get to personally know each other. We also have a chance to meet all the couples and talk with them one on one. There is an opportunity to answer questions the couples may have. There will be some discus-sion about selection. We believe in the couples program and we want to keep it strong in North Carolina. Let’s don’t forget about Wing Ding. This is the National Gold-wing Rally and it will be held in Knoxville, TN. Just like any event, volunteers are needed to make it a success. Each District is assigned a position to fill and North Caroli-na gets the best of them
all…..Greeters. We are scheduled to work Thursday, August 30, from 8am – 5pm. I need your help. I am looking for 24 members who will give three (3) hours of your time while you are attending the rally to help with this task. If you plan to attend Wing Ding and would be willing to help, please let me know. If several from one chapter are attending, I will sched-ule you together as to not break up your “chapter fun” times planned. In closing, lets all remember, we are only here for a little while, lets enjoy our time together. MEMBERS ARE NUMBER ONE!!!! Roy & Cindy Bryant NC District Directors

FROM THE WEST: We joined in on the fun at NC-Y and NC-P2’s Hillbilly Hoedown on June 1-2. Because of recent weather conditions and reported flooding in the area, we opted for four wheels and missed out on all the great riding ad-ventures the area offers. The East and Central chapters love to attend this event because of the riding opportuni-ties. The Western chapters supported Hillbilly Hoedown as well but most were able to come and go daily instead of camping or hoteling. There were some occasional showers but I quote a saying I recently heard, “If you own a motorcycle, eventually you will ride in the rain”. The food was great and easy laid back fellowship was wonderful.
Some of the Chapter Couples left the Hoedown for a ride over to Waynes-ville to meet and welcome the newest Chapter Couple, Bear and Donna For-sythe. When they returned to the Hoe-down, many G2 members came with them to enjoy the evening. Are you looking for a ride? Here is a list of a few great rides planned: - NC-M-2 Mystery Ride after the June 16th gathering. Check out their news-letter for more rides planned along with Chapter NC-I - NC-O-2 Dine Out on June 14 at Lo-gans Steakhouse in Statesville, arrive at 6:15, order at 6:30. Text Jeff to make reservations (704-320-6907). Other rides are listed in their newslet-ter.
- NC-I has a month full of rides, oh so many to list so check out their newslet-ter and pick several to participate with. - NC-G2 has a Day ride on June 23 and June 30 you can join them on a picnic, see their newsletter for details.

Tom & Renee Wasluck Presidential Assistants We, like many people, have a fascination with snow globes. They come in all different sizes and shapes. Many have a miniature scene custom made with a picture of a happy place or special moment. They sit on the shelf reminding us of that special place or moment. One flick of the wrist, one little shake is all it takes to become different, new, and magical again! Just like that snow globe, our Chapters hold many warm, happy memories for all of us – the friends we have made, the adventures we have been on, and the places we normally would not have seen. They too need that occasional flick of the wrist, one little shake, to become new and exciting again. Does your Chapter do the same thing year after year after year? When was the last time your Chapter revived an old ride? When was the last time your Chapter did something new? Do you get involved with other Chapters and District events? Have you asked your Members what rides they want to do? A Chapter that doesn’t get that shake once in a while will become stagnant. It won’t grow and before you know it, you will be losing those Members that have been around for a while. Put your team to work! Have them find out what used to be fun, what your Members would like to do, or where they want to go in the future. Make some changes in your schedule! You will be amazed at what a few little changes can do. Don’t be afraid to flick that wrist and shake it up!
