The Window July 2015 Page 1 We start off the month of July with a bang as we celebrate our great nation and the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. After signing the Declaration of Independence, John Adams, one of its signers (and a Congregationalist deacon), thought that Americans should henceforth celebrate a “great anniversary festival.” In a letter to his wife Abigail he wrote, “It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forevermore.” And, so “a great anniversary festival” was born. Following the celebration of 1776, an even more elaborate celebration was held in 1788, after the new Constitution had been ratified. But between those two celebrations, in 1776 and 1788, there were rivers of bloodshed, the deaths and bankruptcies of many of the signers of the Declaration, families torn apart and businesses and farms destroyed. The freedoms declared by the Declaration — and ushered into fact by the Constitution — were secured at a terrible cost. And they have continued to be secured at a terrible, but precious cost. So, I think that President John Adams words are still relevant to us today— especially his words that this day “be commemorated by solemn acts of devotion to God.” Since a majority of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and those first Congressmen were Anglicans, it’s not surprising that the development of our Prayer Book included prayers for our country and its government, our lands and people, along with thanksgivings for the service and sacrifice, which has secured our freedoms. Our current Prayer Book includes a beautiful prayer “For our Country” (BCP, p. 820); and, as we begin the month of July, I invite you to reflect upon how God has blessed us with this great land of ours and how our partnership with Christ in his ministry serves to renew and re-create our own country and all the countries of the world. May the prayer “For our Country” guide and structure your own prayers: The Window July 2015

We start off the month of July with a bang as we celebrate our great

nation and the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.

After signing the Declaration of Independence, John Adams, one of its

signers (and a Congregationalist deacon), thought that Americans should

henceforth celebrate a “great anniversary festival.” In a letter to his wife

Abigail he wrote, “It ought to be commemorated as the day of

deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be

solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns,

bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the

other, from this time forward forevermore.” And, so “a great anniversary festival” was born.

Following the celebration of 1776, an even more elaborate celebration was held in 1788, after the new

Constitution had been ratified.

But between those two celebrations, in 1776 and 1788, there were rivers of bloodshed, the deaths and

bankruptcies of many of the signers of the Declaration, families torn apart and businesses and farms

destroyed. The freedoms declared by the Declaration — and ushered

into fact by the Constitution — were secured at a terrible cost. And they

have continued to be secured at a terrible, but precious cost. So, I think

that President John Adams words are still relevant to us today—

especially his words that this day “be commemorated by solemn acts of

devotion to God.”

Since a majority of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and

those first Congressmen were Anglicans, it’s not surprising that the

development of our Prayer Book included prayers for our country and its government, our lands and

people, along with thanksgivings for the service and sacrifice, which has secured our freedoms.

Our current Prayer Book includes a beautiful prayer “For our Country” (BCP, p. 820); and, as we

begin the month of July, I invite you to reflect upon how God has blessed us with this great land of

ours and how our partnership with Christ in his ministry serves to renew and re-create our own

country and all the countries of the world. May the prayer “For our Country” guide and structure

your own prayers:

Almighty God, who hast given us this good land for our heritage: We humbly beseech thee that we may always

prove ourselves a people mindful of thy favor and glad to do thy will. Bless our land with honorable industry,

sound learning, and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion from pride and arrogance,

and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought hither

out of many kindreds and tongues. Endue with the spirit of wisdom those to whom in thy Name we entrust the

authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that, through obedience to thy law,

we may show forth thy praise among the nations of the earth. In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with

thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in thee to fail; all which we ask through Jesus Christ

our Lord. Amen.

May your own celebrations be safe and joyful! May God bless and keep this great land of ours; and,

may God bless and keep every one of you,

Do you have a favorite hymn or hymns? Maybe it’s

one that you learned as a little child or another that

was sung at your wedding. Our Episcopal tradition

is a singing tradition! Our hymns express the

language of the heart, not just the mind. It’s been

said that when you sing, you pray twice; and,

Episcopalians are all about prayer and participation

in worship. So, besides touching our hearts, hymns

have also helped us to embrace music as

participants rather than simply as observers or

listeners.

Which hymns touch your heart and help lift you to

those heavenly places where angels sing? We want

to know the favorite hymns of Christ Church!

Sometime during the month of July, please email

your top three favorite hymns to [email protected].

If you don’t do email, just write them down and

either mail then to Ken Stein or put them in his

mailbox at the church. We need them no later than

July 31, 2105.

Then, on Sunday, August 9, 2015, as we celebrate

the beginning of the new academic year, we will

have a Festival of Hymns in both services and sing

those hymns that made the top of the list. Of

course, we can’t sing everybody’s favorite on that

day, but over the coming year, we will include

them in our worship.

What are your favorite hymns?

News from General

Convention

June 27, 2015

Bishop Michael

Curry elected 27th

Presiding Bishop

Bishop of North Carolina Diocese: North Carolina

Michael Bruce Curry was elected eleventh Bishop of North Carolina on February 11, 2000. He was consecrated on June 17, 2000, at Duke Chapel on the campus of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, on March 13, 1953, Bishop Curry attended public schools in Buffalo, New York, and graduated with high honors from Hobart College in Geneva, New York, in 1975. He received the Master of Divinity degree in 1978 from Yale University Divinity School. He has also done continued study at The College of Preachers, Princeton Theological Seminary, Wake Forest University, the Ecumenical Institute at St. Mary's Seminary, and the Institute of Christian Jewish Studies.

Bishop Curry was ordained to the diaconate in June 1978, at St. Paul's Cathedral, Buffalo, New York, by the Rt. Rev. Harold B. Robinson and to the priesthood in December 1978, at St. Stephen's, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, by the Rt. Rev. John M. Burgess.

He began his ministry as deacon-in-charge at St. Stephen's, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in 1978 and was rector there from 1979-1982. He next accepted a call as rector at St. Simon of Cyrene, Lincoln Heights, Ohio, where he served from 1982-1988.

In 1988 he became rector of St. James', Baltimore, Maryland, which he served until his election as bishop.

In his three parish ministries in North Carolina, Ohio, and Maryland, Bishop Curry had extensive involvement in Crisis Control Ministry, founding of ecumenical summer day camps for children, preaching missions, the Absalom Jones initiative, creation of networks of family day care providers, creation of educational centers, and the brokering of millions of dollars of investment in inner city neighborhoods. He inspired a $2.5-million restoration of the St. James' church building after a fire. The St. James' After School Academy was designated a Jubilee Ministry by Presiding Bishop Edmund Browning.

Bishop Curry has served on the boards of a large number of organizations and was a member of the Commission on Ministry in each of the three dioceses where he has served. He has a national preaching and teaching ministry, having been featured on The Protestant Hour and as a frequent speaker at conferences around the country. He has received honorary degrees from Sewanee and Yale.

He is married to the former Sharon Clement, and they have two daughters, Rachel and Elizabeth.

Good and Gracious God, who sends the Holy Spirit to guide and protect your faithful, we

give you thanks and praise for the election of The Rt. Rev. Michael Curry to be the

Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. Grant him your own wisdom as he leads in

these challenging times; grant him the fire and energy of your Spirit so that he will not

grow weary in proclaiming your peace, justice and love. May he inspire us to greater

depths of faith and service so the whole world may come to know Jesus, your Son and

our Lord, in whose name we pray. Amen.

Spotlight on Outreach

Youth Group from Texas Will

Stay at CEC on Mission Trip The EYC from Church of the Holy Nativity, Plano,

Texas, will stay at CEC the nights of July 4 and

July 10 as they travel to their mission trip in

Pennsylvania. We are very happy to offer them our

facilities and they are very grateful for the

accommodations.

Below is a description of the group’s plans.

The Episcopal Youth Churchmen (EYC) from the

Church of the Holy Nativity in Plano, Texas, is

headed to the city of Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, for

the week of July 5 to July 10, 2015. We will be

sending a group of approximately 11 consisting of 9

youth and 2 adult chaperones. The youth are all 7th

through 11th graders. The purpose of the trip will be

to share the word and love of Christ to the people

of Aliquippa, help expand the relationships between

the residents of Aliquippa and local churches

supporting Uncommon Grounds, and to learn what

it means to serve on a mission team. The Holy

Nativity Episcopal Church (HNEC) youth group

members are experienced in outreach and local

community events but are eager to participate in a

remote mission event to learn more about what it

means to be a missionary and how to build

relationships with unfamiliar communities.

Goodwill Donations

When you donate clothing and other items to

Goodwill, please designate CHURCHES UNITED

IN CHRIST HELP MINISTRY to receive credit for

your contributions. Applicants for HELP with

utilities from the HELP MINISTRY often ask for

vouchers for Goodwill. We will give a $25 Voucher

the HELP MINISTRY account at Goodwill is very

low so this is an urgent request.

Sunday School Offerings

During the Summer

The Bread of Angels Sunday class continues

to meet throughout the summer, and all are

invited to attend the lively discussions that

result from the study of a variety of

theologians. The summer classes will focus on

Bishop John (Jack) Spong’s publication

Rescuing the Bible form Fundamentalism. We

meet at 9:00 a.m. in the Cates Library and we

have a chair waiting for you.

See you there!

Each Sunday, near the conclusion of our service,

we repeat a prayer that includes the phrase, “and

now, Father, send us out to do the work you have

given us to do…”. EfM offers lay people a path to

discover ways to respond to that call to Christian

service.

Are you interested in exploring your personal

ministry in greater depth…with the support of an

open and caring group of co-explorers? Consider

CEC Education for Ministry (EfM). We have a

limited number of openings for next Fall so please

“I will go to the altar of God, to God, my joy and my delight” - Psalm 43:4

The ministry of acolytes is a serving ministry of the church that comes from ancient times. The word “Acolyte” comes from the Greek word “akolouthos,” meaning a servant or attendant who waits continually upon another. Episcopal worship is a participatory worship and the service of acolytes helps to keep the liturgy flowing smoothly; thus, opening the way for worshipers to participate without distraction.

The primary job of acolytes is to assist the celebrant (the priest in charge of a worship service) and it is a privilege to serve at Christ’s Table. Acolytes, then, are living symbols of faith that enhance the worship service by helping to glorify God through Christ Jesus.

Our acolyte program here at Christ Church is essential to our worship and so there will be training sessions for acolytes coming up in both July (adult acolytes only) and August. You will be hearing about the details of those training sessions shortly. But, at this time, I ask all of you, boys and girls,

men and women, to seriously and prayerfully consider serving as an acolyte. We need you.

May God’s Holy Spirit guide us as we seek to offer to God the praise and thanksgiving of our hearts,

Judith+
