With each holiday on the calendar we have expectations. AtHalloween, you expect costumes and candy. For Thanksgiving,we look forward to turkey and football. (or turkey and a nap!)Christmas holds a host of traditions including decorations, par-ties, food and presents. Valentine’s Day is loaded with chocolateand flowers. Likewise, Easter arrives with it’s own set of expecta-tions: new spring clothes, early outdoor church services, Easteregg hunts, Sunday dinner including ham and coconut cake anddon’t forget a trip to Grandma’s house.

Whenever you make plans to attend a concert, there is also a setof expectations. While procuring tickets, you hope to secure goodseats at a good price. We can all assume you will need to travel toget there and once you arrive, parking will be a predictable issue. The flip side of this is not surprising; you cannot expect to be seat-ed anywhere near a restroom or concession area.

On occasion, spectators are allowed theopportunity to meet the musicians after theperformance, but this is not nearly as pre-dictable as the inevitable traffic snarl in theparking lot. As the mass exodus proceeds, there is the infuriating ‘left turn only’ whenyou are in the right lane, and lines moving soslowly pedestrians pass you and you wishyou had brought a sack lunch.

Sometimes, the totally unexpected occurs.Recently, I saw a documentary about an openair concert which was interrupted by a sud-

den storm, blowing down the stage and injuring several specta-tors. For all who were there, I’m sure none will ever forget.

It doesn’t need to be tragic for a day to become one we remem-ber forever. In our family, if you ask any of us about our mostmemorable Easter, we will all answer with a comment about theyear we chased cows. No, we were not in a rodeo. My grandfa-ther was a farmer and even though he had moved into town, hekept a few acres for the purpose of maintaining a few head of cat-tle. One year, Easter arrived shortly after he had been to a cattleauction and purchased four calves. Wild calves to be more pre-cise. In the absence of a good dog to assist with the steeringprocess, my grandfather asked us to help him drive them from theholding pen into the pasture.

Keep in mind, we were still in our Easter clothes, including highheels, and corsages. But we took our positions in the field. Asyou would expect, the presence of new people in brightly coloredclothes didn’t have a calming effect upon these creatures. Theyreacted pretty much like the old western movies, stampedingfrom one end of the field toward the other, not stopping for any-thing, including the fence. And the chase was on, at least for themenfolk. At this point, we girls chose not to participate except inan observatory capacity. In the end, a neighbor with a good dogand a four wheeler got the cows herded into the desired location. Not a typical Easter by any stretch of the imagination, althoughquite memorable.

Previous issues of the Weekender Magazine focused on makingmemories. In reality, each issue is full of ideas and suggestionsfor making memories. This month the focus is on concerts. Sowhat’s the connection between cows and concerts? Experiencesshared by family. Here’s wishing you a safe spring season filledwith family fun whether it be attending concerts or observingEaster traditions. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going shoppingfor a new Easter outfit that will be appropriate for anything.
