Up Close w/the Editor

Enjoy Dining, Gaming, Live Entertainment and fun. Test your luck and

skill at some of the best casinos in the Midwest. All bets are ON!

The leaves are falling, the air is turning cooler and, and the wardrobe includes

sweaters and jeans instead of shorts and tanktops. My calendar is already full of spooky places to go and Halloween activities to do. There is nothing more fun than having a clown monster scare the scream out you or winding around a corn maze that offers only one way out. Halloween is one of my favorite times of year and I love watching all the trick-or-treat-ers show off their costumes. Last year, I counted 129 “Frozen” cos-tumes, winning the most popular in my small town. What will it be

2. FEARFEST

COLUMBIA - In late 2009 the government setup the Snowbri-er containment facility in Boone County Missouri to house people infected with a deadly virus know as Humanus Fames Nine or HF9 for short. People infected with HF9 become baseless animals with only the most primal of instincts.

They have no fear, no remorse and an insatiable hunger for hu-man flesh. In fact the only pain stimulus that they will react to is light. Those affected are no longer human, they are not your neigh-bors, they are not your friends. They will have no mercy on you!!!! The zombie apocalypse has be-gun...

The innovative team at FEARFEST has created custom trailers with mounted paintball guns that give you the opportu-nity to enjoy paintball WITHOUT the return fire. THATS RIGHT, this is your chance to “OPEN FIRE” on LIVE zombies. See more at www.fearfesthauntedhouse.com:

3. NECRO PLANET

COLUMBIA - The world is dead. Society has collapsed. Law and order have been replaced by chaos and survival. NecroPlanet features two interactive haunted attractions: The Pit and the leg-endary Necropolis, now in its 10th year! This season you will experience a new and interactive Necropolis where you will have a chance to take an active role and try to save the world from the im-minent zombie threat to humani-ty. Come experience ultimate ter-ror this Halloween season! The apocalypse isn’t coming... its here!

Necropolis - Amongst the rub-ble, one factory eerily stands and has become a beacon for evil spir-its hungry for the souls of the liv-ing. It features Hollywood quality sets and special effects, profession-al make up and prosthetics and a team of highly trained creatures.

The Pit - Not for the faint of heart, you will have to find your way out of the gore and grime IF the cannibals let you out alive!

EUREKA - Welcome to St. Louis’ largest haunted attraction with over 22 acres of terror. En-ter the maze and try to find your way past Red and his demented friends.

The story goes that Jebediah “Red” Slaughter inherited the property and built barns, hosted hayrides and planted corn, shar-ing the farm with the public. However, a chemical spill near-by poisoned the crops. Red and his brother dug a well to try to use the water to wash away the chemicals. While digging, the found a chest covered in archaic symbols. Once opened, ancient demonic spirits took over and possessed Red, his brother and employees. They wandered into the corn and disappeared.

Fear Farm has opened again and is bigger than ever. Lose your soul in Red’s Corn Maze or ride. For more information, visit www.cornmazemassacre.com

6. THE BEAST ANDEDGE OF HELL

KANSAS CITY - The Twelfth Street Bridge Historic West Bot-toms District, near downtown, is a sort of nerve center for commercial haunted houses with the grand-daddy, Edge of Hell, opening in 1975, and cited as the first, large-scale haunted house in continuous operations with neighboring Beast opening in 1991. Both rank among the best in the U.S. which has seen many adaptations to the original haunted houses over the decades, including more elaborate sets, make-up and costumes, anima-tronics, holograms and techniques to “transport” scare cast members from place to place.

“We have been sending chills for decades but the 4-sensory ex-perience (sight, sound, smell and touch) is even more compelling today with Millennials wanting to be part of the experience versus just watching a movie or playing a video game”, said Amber Ar-nett-Bequeaith, a.k.a. Queen of the Haunts. www. kcbeast.com

7. PHOBIUS HAUNTED HOUSE

WRIGHT CITY - Cyrus Fears was a young child when he be-came a victim of the extreme vi-olence and tragedy that was the civil war. His father was a prom-inent Confederate general and his mother a war nurse. As an only child Cyrus spent much of his ad-olescence assisting his mother in the field. Cyrus was surrounded by the atrocities of war at a very young age.

Becoming an orphan at a very young age, a renowned traveling war physician was called in to tend the wounded and stumbled upon the young orphan, taking him in as his own. Cyrus was in-telligent and became a successful physician.

Dr. Fears joined a circus, and soon became obsessed with creat-ing an elixir of fear. He eventual-ly became the leader of the circus and changed the name to Phobius. Once they had made their way back to Wright City, they stayed and are still there with his victims.

8. THE MANOR

JOPLIN - The Manor is a high shock/high gore attraction with terrifying special effects, trained actors, and is not recommended for those that are weak at heart, with child, or have epilepsy since strobe lights are used in various locations in the haunt. For this purpose, we have trained EMTs and Security on hand to address any situations that may arise. For those that get around at their own pace, we also have no problem making reasonable accommoda-tions to allow everyone to enjoy the entertainment, but we are not wheelchair accessible. The Man-or appeals to all of the senses and will prey on all of them! The Man-or also takes pride in working with local businesses as much as possi-ble to fuel the community; please head over to the sponsor page to see a list of sponsors and partners.

Tours are offered nightly at 7 p.m. through Oct. 31, at 5 p.m. nightly in Nov. The price is $15 for adults and 7.50 for children ages 5-10.

People to See:

Dan And Shay

Since coming together a little over a year ago, Dan Smyers and Shay Moon-ey—known collectively as Dan + Shay—have established themselves as one of country music’s most promising duos. With pristine vocals and a knack for writing clever yet relatable songs about looking for, finding and losing love, Dan + Shay bring a youthful sense of energy to country music. Their debut album, Where It All Began, harnesses that ener-gy with 12 radio-ready tracks.

The album’s title comes from the last line of their debut hit single, “19 You + Me,” which, upon its release, had the biggest first week by a new duo in trade publication Country Aircheck’s history, was the most added debut of 2013 at country radio and was certified Gold by the RIAA. The harmony-rich song reinvents the popular theme of nostalgia through a flurry of evocative imagery: you were California beautiful, I was play-ing everything but cool; it was everything we wanted it to be, the summer of 19 You + Me.

“’19 You + Me’ is where it all began, and those words are the last you hear in

that song. It felt appropriate for our first album,” says Shay, from Arkansas.

“These 12 songs really define us,” adds Dan, who grew up in suburban Pittsburgh. The pair first met during a late-night jam session at Dan’s Nashville home. “They’re honest, and this whole project started with Shay and I writing songs together. That’s how we met. Where It All Began is the story of who we are, who we were and who we’re going to be.”

Already Academy of Country Music Award nominees for Vocal Duo of the Year, Dan + Shay are following in the footsteps of their perennially lauded influences Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban and Tim McGraw. And the sing-along songs that make up Where It All Began evoke the sound of those artists, along with a healthy dose of ‘90s rock and R&B.

But it’s the album’s writing that truly distinguishes Where It All Began. Dan + Shay wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on the record and bring an educated yet hip slant to country lyrics. From the introductory whistles of opening track “Show You Off,” it’s easy to go along for

the ride. The duo’s favorite to perform live, the album opener instantly identi-fies Shay as one of country’s best young vocalists. His pliable voice soars along to Dan’s deft guitar lines and the result is musical alchemy. “When you’re in love with somebody,” Dan says of the song’s message, “you’re infatuated with them and you want to be seen with them everywhere.”

The inspiration for “Stop, Drop + Roll” came from a rather unlikely source: the Stephen King horror film “The Mist,” which the guys were watching late one night. When a character burst into flames, Dan quipped that he needed to “stop, drop and roll,” and the likemind-ed duo knew right away that it was a song. “We paused the movie and literally wrote it right then and there,” laughs Shay. Such anecdotes are proof that inspiration can strike at any time for a songwriter.

“When you’re writing, you can’t be scared to say anything.” And with the release of the hotly anticipated Where It All Began, the most exciting chapter is about to be written.
