Summer Adventures A few years ago, my husband, David, and I decided we needed

to get an updated photo. I began to call photographers askingabout what type if backdrops they had for an in-studio photoshoot. Then I began scheduling hair appointments trying to getthem about two to three weeks prior so our hair would have hadtime to grow out a bit and therefore look natural. I even startedtrying to figure out which of our clothes would look good togeth-er in a photo. I didn’t want the colors to clash or the styles to betoo different. Wearing a casual sweater just wouldn’t do if hechose to wear a tux.

My husband’s approach was way different. He didn’t searchthrough the closet for any specific outfit, nor did he plan his hair

length and he gave no thoughtwhatsoever to the back-ground. He did, however, get a photographer.

To make a long story short,we never did set an appoint-ment with any local photog-raphers. Instead, we took avacation to visit family. Ournephew, Spruce, is a profes-sional photographer and asluck would have it, he wasalso visiting family in thesame place at the same time.Unbeknownst to me, my dearspouse had been aware of this

and had asked him to bring hiscamera. One afternoon, they said, “Okay, let’s do it.”

My response? “Do what?” I had not known anything about itand hadn’t brought any clothes which I considered photo-worthy.

Then I made the mistake of asking about a backdrop. Horrors! You see, Spruce is a sports photographer constantly striving forthat perfect candid shot. He began to show me some of his workwith backgrounds like trees, fountains and in one case, a barn.He assured me we would be able to get a nice photo outdoors -somewhere.

Trying to be funny, David suggested an abandoned grocerystore about a mile or so down the road.

“NO!” “Perfect! Let’s go.” (I’ll let you guess whichresponse was mine and which was Spruce’s.)

We hopped in the car and drove to the site. It was even worsethan I expected. Windows were broken out, walls leaned and theroof sagged – at least in places where it wasn’t completely miss-ing.

I was unimpressed, but was quickly outvoted. We wadedthrough knee high weeds and he started taking pictures eventhough I said I wasn’t ready. We posed. He snapped. Uponreview, the very first un-posed shot was the best and the onewhich is now used on a regular basis on this page.

This month our focus in on outdoor adventures. As describedabove, you have probably already figured out that I’m not an out-door person. I can be perfectly content to stay indoors for days ata time. But in this case, I am pleased to report that we enjoyed afun family outing making memories doing something as simple astaking pictures at an old abandoned grocery store.

By Scott McCulloughDiversity is what sports are

all about. From something assimple as paddling a kayak(some say that is not so simple)to throwing a baseball at 90mph to qualifying forMissouri’s “Olympics,” sportsoffer fans some thrilling enter-tainment and a chance to takepart.

You’ve heard the term:“Paddle your own canoe.” Well, imagine a raceacross the entire state of Missouri, on the mightyMissouri River. That is exactly what the MissouriAmerican Water MR340 is all about. Watch the racefrom many vantage points, July 8-11, 2014, as 400canoes and kayaks from across America race 340miles in 88 hours or less. For spectators, Katy TrailState Park (the longest rails-to-trails pathway inAmerica) runs besides the river for more than 150miles. In Jefferson City, the pedestrian walkway onthe Missouri River Bridge, four blocks from theCapitol, connects to the Katy Trail. To find other greatviewing points and to follow the progress, check theMR340’s website.

Major League Baseball is well underway. We are allcheering for an all Missouri World Series this yearbetween the Cardinals and the Royals. Get your tick-ets now to catch (no pun intended) all of the actionwith Missouri’s three professional baseball teams. The St. Louis Cardinals went to the playoffs last year.Take a guided tour of Busch Stadium and see whereeverything happens. Be sure to visit the brand new(opened in April 2014) St. Louis Ballpark Village, ahuge entertainment and dinning district adjacent tothe ballpark.

Across the state, the Kansas City Royals put on ashow at Kauffman Stadium. Several different fasci-nating and informative Stadium Tours are offered. While you are in KC, spend some time at the Powerand Light shopping and entertainment district, eightmiles west of Kauffman Stadium.

Watch the up-and-comersplay when the SpringfieldCardinals take the field. ThisDouble-A, minor league affili-ate of the St. Louis Cardinals isbased at Hammons Field. Alsoin Springfield, a must see forany sports fan is the MissouriSports Hall of Fame, a 15-minute drive from HammonsField. Whether you’re a sportsfanatic or a casual fan, you'll

experience all forms of Missouri sports and athletesat their best, up close and personal, when you visitthe Hall of Fame.

The official Olympic Winter Games are over, butMissouri’s version of summer Olympics is justaround the corner. Recreational athletes can watchand take part in an Olympic-style sports festival withmore than 40 sports for all ages and ability levels atthe annual Show-Me State Games. Last year, 25,566people participated in the summer games. For 2014,the Senior State Games are held June 20-22, followedby the 30th Anniversary Show-Me State Games, July18-20 and 25-27. Most events take place in Columbia. Two outstanding Columbia hot-spots for a casualmeal and a cold beer are Flat Branch Pub andBrewing, with a large, tree-shaded patio, andShakespeare’s Pizza, named the Best CollegeHangout in the United States, by ABC's GoodMorning America.

What is the fastest growing (some say, the mostpopular) sport in America? Automobile racing. If youlike it loud and fast, Lucas Oil Speedway inWheatland, 40 minutes west of Camdenton, is con-sidered by racing insiders to be one of the top fivedirt tracks in the nation – you might see the nextNASCAR star. The facilities include a drag-boat rac-ing lake. In southeast Missouri, five miles west ofFarmington, Doe Run Raceway features go-kart,mini-stock, B-modified and vintage-car races. Thrillsand spills are guaranteed at both tracks.
